AC/DC Album Downloaded 400,000 Times Despite No Digital Release

AC/DC's forthcoming new album, "Black Ice", leaked onto file sharing service BitTorrent on October 7 and has been downloaded over 400,000 times.

The album, set for official release on Monday (October 20), will not be available as a legal download.

According to Undercover the band's label, Sony, released fake AC/DC songs online to hamper users attempting to download the album.

However, Torrentfreak claimed that there was no evidence of the fake tracks online.

AC/DC boycott Apple's iTunes download service as well as other similar services, but still enjoy huge sales of their albums. In 2007 they sold 1.3 million albums in the USA.

AC/DC's Angus Young has said that the band's decision to refrain from releasing music digitally was motivated by a desire to ensure their fans enjoy their albums as wholes, not simply a few tracks at a time.

"We don't make singles, we make albums," he told the Telegraph. "We believe the songs on any of our albums belong together."

Agreed, sort of. I understand that they would rather have people buy the CD's as opposed to buying a greatest hits album or downloading it. At least that way you still make some money as opposed to people just illegally downloading it.

Some albums deserve to be listened to in their entirety. I don't know if I'd say AC/DC has ever had one of these, but if I download, I download the entire album (and usually buy the actual album later if I liked it)

My thoughts exactly. I love opening a new album. Clicking just can't compare to ripping the plastic off a new CD and cursing at the"antitheft" tape they put all over it, then going through the entire lyric booklet and reading it as the CD plays. You can never top that!

I love the feeling of opening a new cd and listening to it as I look through the liner notes. But what if an artists comes along and I like only about one or two songs by them. To me that isn't worth an entire $15 album and that's when I like buying singles

honestly, i have no sympathy for AC/DC if thier pissed becuase we are downloading their music. Check it out, thier US tour right now, good luck getting tickets for under $150, and they also are doing a collabiration with the muscial play "Wicked", where they acctually play the music in the background while the play is being shot on stage.... $350 a ticket. I love CD's way more than MP3's, hell, I like vinyl way more than I like CD's, but the point is that I just don't have to money to buy all the CD's that I want. I made a list of all of my favourite albums out of my large downloaded MP3 collection and after doing some browsing (not counting 2nd hand) the list still came to £400.
Of course eventually I intend to have everything on CD but at the end of the day, until CD's are way less than the average £12 each (in the UK), then the illegally downloaded MP3 will always prevail.

Not really. Most places sell single songs for .99 and most CDs have about 13 songs, plus the actual disk, pictures, etc. for about 13 bucks. Seems like it has little to do with money. If it was about money, they'd only sell it on their website for like 15 bucks and make a bigger profit.

Well i have been listening to Black Ice all day on VH1's The Leak, so i'm sure they are the real tracks. It gets really repetitive. I really don't want to go buy the whole thing. And this whole spout with Angus that they don't make singles they make albums, then what the hell was Rock and Roll Train supposed to be? Which it is arguably the best track on the album. It peaks too early. The riffs aren't memorable. The drumming is the same old snare cymbal they always have. There really isn't any innovation. I really liked stiff upper lip. It has some memorable tracks like stiff upper lip and sattelite blues (which were singles btw). This album didn't need to be made. I'm glad 400,000 people are pirating it.

I downloaded the album just I like I did with Death Magnetic.....but I plan on STILL buying the album...even if it's thru wal-mart. I respect the band and their music. If fans respect the bands enough they will buy their music either way.

some songs do sound similar to their old stuff but i still like the album.
there's a bit of slide guitar in one of the songs so its kinda neat.
im definitely gonna buy it once it gets released

My answer is the same as tsk84eva's... But I still like it, a next generation thing is in the album. I know that I won't find the album in stores so I downloaded it a few weeks ago. Sorry AC/DC but I love you guys cause I love Hard Rock. I live somewhere in EAST ASIA. I can't believe that AC/DC is still alive. I think 'Black Ice' will top the Billboard 200 like Metallica's 'DM'. Let's wait & see what happens.

why not just sell the album digitally as a whole then? that's what NIN did. just cause itunes sucks doesn't mean that legal downloading as a whole does. they should be looking at those 400,000 and groaning over how much they could have made selling legal downloads.

to the people saying that AC/DC's albums aren't 'real albums', just save it please. it's all preference. they're a hard rock band, not pyschadelia or progressive or metal- things that are typically renowned for technicality and composition. it's PURE rock and f*ckin ROLL. they make ROCK N ROLL ALBUMS.

Downloads (usually mp3s) are fine for their purpose (which, for me, is as a preview to decide whether to buy the music), but i prefer the sound of something tangible. The difference in sound between even high-bitrate mp3's and hard-copy CD's is comparable to that between CD and original vinyl versions, at least to my ear. Of the music I have on my computer, i had most of it on legal cd's until my cd case disappeared (i think it got stolen somehow) a few months ago, and i will eventually probably buy them all again. The heirarchy of music goes Vinyl, CD, tape, mp3, mp3-on-CD, Ipod.
