AFI Reveal 2007 Tour, Cover Bowie

Alt-rockers AFI have added a few new shows to their early-year headlining tour as the band continues to build momentum behind last year's chart-topping "Decemberunderground" release.

The California punk revivalists will launch their mini-tour Jan. 31 in Tampa, FL, with 12 shows in three weeks currently on the schedule. Fellow alt-rockers Sick Of It All and The Dear And Departed will offer opening support on the trek.

AFI has also made available online a few recent live performances. The group's covers of David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" and Blur's "Song 2" can be found at the band's website. Also available for viewing are performances of "Love Like Winter" and "Endlessly She Said," both off the band's most recent album.

The group released its first live DVD, "I Heard A Voice," on Dec. 12.

AFI isn't too bad, but they have as much business covering Bowie as Sheryl Crow had covering GNR

Who wrote that? It's the Dearly Departed, you know, the famous phrase, wtf the dear and departed. They supported A7x and sucked balls. Afi were good though but with the explosion as support last time?

AFI has nothing to do with punk anymore. Davey Havok's a whiney little bitch in drag.

Quoted for truth.

I like Hunter as a bass player, but Davey is beyond overrated.

i wish that bands who aren't good enough to own their own credibility wouldn't try to establish it by covering songs by important artists like bowie.

I'm not a huge fan of these guys, but I'll listen occasionally. I've heard far worse. Guitar playing is a bit simple for my taste, but bass lines, vocals and original song writing makes up for it, although Love Like Winter, though I like the song, is a bit over processed. It'd probably sound far better live.

i was really skeptical at first when i went to go see them on tour in july, but the show they put on blew my mind, they're actually great live compared to MCR who suck live. and the guitar is better than most pop-punk bands and the bass player is wicked cool it was fun to watch them play. regardless i still hate davey's face.

Whoa, what? Try listening to "Dancing Through Sunday" from Sing the Sorrow. It's not Malmsteen, but it's nothing to scoff at, either.

I dunno, I scoffed... better than most of their stuff that i've cringed through but still "scoffable"

I watched the covers and ive never heard the original bowie song but it sounded decent. AFI may not have the hardest guitar to play but it is a very unique style (in the latest albums), which is why i like it. I think Davey Havok is awesome and i think his eyeshadow and fake eyelashes are great too =p They are an awesome band live, both in sound and the energy of their performance.

its_sublime07 :
hmmm, i guess if their intent was to sound as emo as possible with that song, and make me feel like i can't listen to it for a month or so, then they succeeded. i LOVE the original song, and while i was totally pumped at the acoustic aproach, it instantly went downhill. AFI, you have damaged a song forever.

Can't people leave other people's signature songs alone? I didn't see the "Song 2" cover up there, but being a big Bowie/Blur fan, and because my sister likes those emo bands, I decided to check it out anyway. A lot of bands aren't really creative the way they do covers anymore, I guess. I mean, really, Luna used to cover hard rock songs, it was awesome, and original. Come on now, if you're going to do a cover, make it your own... in a good way. Oh, well, I can't really stand emo music anyway.

The guitar playing is better than a lot of other bands out there now, and better than EVERYONE in whatever genre you wanna call them, but certainly not shredder by any sense.

AFI is a great band.... the guitar playing may not be Hendrix but, they have a good thing going on, the vocals and song writing are really, really good. THe drums and bass are also good, but for me, it's davey's vocals and songwriting that makes them great.

I'm likely the biggest Bowie fan on this site, and I loved the cover.

(Let's ignore for a moment that I'm also likely the biggest AFI fan here)

Because musicians today (especially AFI) are completely incapable of creating anything remotely original. AFI used to be a punk band, now look at them: total commercial trash.

I'm kinda afraid to admit that I like AFI. The new CD has some nice tracks. I think Davey might be gay though? He needs to eat a steak or go hunting; It might help him "man-up" a bit. Still, though, he seems like a cool dude.

Jade Puget is a very smart guitarist. The guitar isn't hard to play, but it is obvious the writing is very well done. He's the only guitarist in the band, he can't just whip out some shredding whenever he wants he has to keep with the song. AFI used to be Hardcore or whatever, but now they're just AFI. If you would just accept that they aren't the same, and that it'd be kind of lame if they made remakes of their last album every time. Dave's not gay. And, his voice on Song 2 was actually pretty sweet.

He's not gay. And he's vegan [so he won't eat meat]. But yeah, he is cool.

Emo_Man2000 :
Afi is probably one of the better bands out there today despite what people think. They changed their music, but they didn't change it to the conformity of today's mainstream, they added more electronics but they have begun that in sing the sorrow before sampling became such a fad in today's music industry. personally i prefer the "Art of Drowning and Sing the Sorrow over decemberunderground but that is in my top ten of my cd collection. And one must face the facts, no matter how much you dislike them for changing their style or not being the kind of music you like, they are the ones that are making a living off of making and selling music.
