Against Me! Talk 'New Wave'

Against Me!'s Tom Gabel recently spoke to Billboard about their upcoming major label debut, reports Punknews.org. The record is titled New Wave and is due out July 10, 2007. Gabel explained the sound of the record:

"This is a straight-across-the-board rock record. I don't mean to say that it's not punk, but I don't want to get into a fucking debate ... so I'm just going to say it's a rock record."

The record also features more standalone songs:

"With 'Searching for a Former Clarity,' I felt a lot of the songs relied on the songs before or afterwards both lyrically and musically. They only made sense in the context of the record," he says. "With ['New Wave'], I just wanted to write good individual songs that stood on their own."

Against Me! recently launched kicked off a co-headlining tour with Mastodon, along with support from Cursive and Planes Mistaken For Stars. After the month-long tour, which ends May 26 in Atlanta, the band will visit Australia and Europe in June before returning stateside for various shows, including a Lollapalooza set in Chicago in August.

Awesome stuff.

Love this band, hopefully this new record won't go too mainstreamy sounding/radio friendly, like how the last one did (though it was brillant).

i saw these guys with mastodon. worst band i've ever seen. if you're into bland drumming with power chords and chants then they'd definitely be perfect. mastodon and cursive rocked that night.

I heard these guys from the lobby at the Warfield while we were drinking 6 dollar beers waiting for Mastodon. The beers were great.

Undoubtedly the word sell-outs will be banded about for no good reason by *****s once this is released.

Oh well, the less narrow-minded will enjoy the greatness.

We haven't heard any of the music yet, so you can't be sure they aren't selling out. I'm sure it'll still be good, though.

I don't care if they "sold out" or not, but I find it strange to listen to their songs about anarchism and counter culture and then compare that to the choices the band has made.

I'm not expecting much, they haven't released a truly good record since their EP's or RAR

What I meant was that some people will denounce them for the whole 'major-label' aspect. Also, they said "I don't mean to say that it's not punk, but I don't want to get into a ****ing debate ... so I'm just going to say it's a rock record." so people will say "They changed their sound slightly! They must be sell-outs!"

Any band with an exclamation point in it's name loses a good margin of respect from me already, add that to bad live performances and you have a winner.

If you saw them live, you were probably there for Mastodon. I have no idea how Against Me! got paired with them, since, generally speaking, fans of one band most likely don't like the other. If you haven't seen/heard them, then you're just stereotyping them and your opinion is null.

Against Me! will always be a great band, no matter where they end up. A move to a major label does not always mean that the music suffers, that just tends to be the trend. I'm eagerly awaiting this release.

i'm pretty sure it'll be a good album...but i wish against me! was the main band, and not just an opening band for mastodon

OMG SELLOUTZ

I wonder why they're calling it New Wave. That's kind of weird. I'm sure it will be rad though.

Their old songs were emotionally driven through poetic lyrics. They talked about political issues that other bands didn't even know about.

Tom Gabel doesn't wanna call it a punk record because he isn't punk, along with the rest of the band (including the womanizer).

^-- i love that.

against me is a great band whether you think they are sellouts or not. the sh*t that pisses me off though, is the fact that you used to be able to see them for 5 bucks, get a shirt for 5-7 bucks and they would rock you like non other. now you pay 25 bucks for them and mistaken for stars and you get two other decent bands but the show sucks, and the tshirts and cds are 12-15!!! wtf???

you want to hear irony, listen to one of their greats... "reinventing axle rose" and look at them now.
