Angels & Airwaves: 'Love' Album, Film To Be Released For Free

Even as he prepares for Blink-182's summer reunion tour, guitarist Tom DeLonge is deeply ensconced in the next project by his other band, Angels & Airwaves - an album and film project called "Love" that should be out before the end of the year.

DeLonge tells Billboard.com that "Love" - which will be released for free thanks to corporate underwriting - is "the biggest release of my life, the pinnacle of my creativity" and likens it to Pink Floyd's "The Wall" in the scope of its ambition. "It's super conceptual and highbrow in many ways, very artistic, very Stanley Kubrick," he says. "But it's not a rock opera. It's a very modern version of what could happen when you blend the film industry and the music industry together in a very, very arty, kind of cool way with professionals involved all along the path."

DeLonge says the "Love" movie - which began life as a documentary about Angels & Airwaves recording its 2006 debut album, "We Don't Need To Whisper," and expanded from there - "blurs the line between full-fledged live action and documentary with these epic kind of...meditative sequences where the sound design and the music and the picture all bend together to create a sonic experience as much as a visual one." The script, meanwhile, "tells a story of human life and destiny but at the same time really makes usual moments of life extraordinary. It's a circular narrative in many ways, where it kind of sums up the human race in a time capsule."

The music of "Love," DeLonge says, will have a prog-rock kind of flavor. "It's like blending Radiohead and U2 together with these kind of Pink Floyd movements," he explains. "Things happen unpredictably and take you to these epic soundscapes. It's very much in the spirit of Angels & Airwaves, but it sounds way, way more thought-out and way more ambitious."

DeLonge says the group is still figuring out mechanisms for delivering the film and album and are also planning a tour to support the project. All of this, of course, is going on while he rehearses for the Blink-182 tour, which begins July 23 in Las Vegas.

"It's gonna be a really busy time - It's fucking crazy, actually. I don't know what I'm doing," DeLonge says with a laugh. "But I'm totally down and excited to figure out how to make it all happen, 'cause in my life both of these (bands) can be a very necessary thing."

It's getting harder and harder to be an AVA fan. I like their music, but I recognize it as what it is. Unfortunately, AVA does not seem to recognize AVA for what it is - Tom DeLonge specifically. The music's decent, I enjoy it, but it's not going to be be as "ambitious" as Pink Floyd or even U2. I don't think he realizes how no one is taking him seriously besides himself.

I know, what really disturbs me is that there are people out there who think this guy is the most talented musician around, I have a couple of friends that do so, and I mean everyone can have their own opinion, but worship a band that sings about ****ing their grand pa' and having a little dick... tom has never claimed to be the greatest musician, i dont think any1 would say that if you are your just stupid, but while hes not technically good he is great at writing simple songs, and you cant say alot of the lyrics off the blink 182 self titled album arnt meaningful even some of the songs on their older albums aswell, even back on dude ranch. sure they had songs about stupid funny things but music doesnt have to be serious all the time its suposed to be fun and thats what they did...and to everyone who is flaming tom delonge i dont think any of you are in a position to put him down, he is making a living of writing music and in my opinion doing a very good job, his songs are simple and very catchy that get stuck in your head.

Well in my opinion the best song Tom has ever written (in Blink at least) was Dumpweed. Quite a few sweet riffs for a punk band. But really his voice just suits that pop-punk-rock sound so well.

At least he had a decent voice and he's a decent guitar player (maybe not now though since I too saw them on Jay Leno and it was sort of iffy like he didn't care).

Never cared much for AVA though. Any side projects that those 3 have done were never as good as Blink is. I use to like them a whole lot more when I was younger though, now I've grown detached since, shall we say, matured.

Epic is hard to pull off though. I guess we shall see how this turns out soon enough (though I'm not in a hurry).

radiohead = complexe chord, timing, sound, bass riff, very great vocal and style. original guitar solo. alway creative and going forward.

AVA = easy power chord, 4/4, same structure, no guitar solo.

You cant compare a band who release some of the greatest cd of all time : OK COMPUTER, KID A, AMNESIAC, HAIL TO THE THIEF and IN RAINBOW with a pop punk band who use delay and reverb. I'm a big fan of blink/ava/boxcar and the biggest fan of radiohead on earth.

Jhonny greenwood and co are some of the most talented and original musician of de last 20 years. Delonge cant play guitar very well and dont have the originality of greenwood.

listen to PARANOID ANDROID from ok computer. listen to all the intruments, the structure, the solo, the lyric. he sang really slowly with a very fast melody. its very clever. dont compare this to ava....

They hate a band only because they're either famous and stealing the spotlight from their favorite band, or hate them because they don't like their music and believe that no one else should, or even possibly can and that the said band does not deserve to be there - who the f*ck cares? - wait, the haters do. Really? I mean really? As a musician I appreciate every single note that flows into my hears no matter what it is. Being open-minded you can enjoy every genre, as far as music can go. I really don't understand how there is so much hate in the music industry.

Half the people here FAIL to realise Tom is comparing his ambition with these bands. The fact you can't understand a simple article might explain why some of you struggle to get AVA in the first place.

I'd rather Tom set the bar high for himself so he becomes a better musician.

Tom's only aim is to please fans. Giving an album for free can only benefit you. Give the guy a break!

Coldplay made quite a leap with Viva La Vida, so who knows? They sure as hell will never be Radiohead or Pink Floyd, but they might put out something different and inspiring.

I think Tom's singing is the fatal flaw of Angels and Airwaves. I think they could have been a great band if they had a more mature sounding singer.
I love Blink 182, and I think AVA are good, but it could be improved by someone else's vocals.

Technically, the album actually has no worth if it's free. It's more of a fact than a subjective projection.
