Ben Folds Five have reunited in their original lineup to record a new album for the first time in 13 years.
The original trio of Ben Folds with Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee last released a full album in 1999, "the Unauthorized Biography Of Reinhold Messner".
Fans of their emo-infused pop were delighted yesterday when the frontman tweeted a photo of the band recording in the studio, seen below. It confirmed for the first time that a new album was in the works.
Shortly after, he added that the album would be released in spring, without offering a specific release date.
Speaking to Spinner last year, the singer revealed that the band were considering a new release after Sony suggested adding new material to a Ben Folds compilation "The Best Imitation Of Myself: A Retrospective" which was released on October 11.
"We tend to do things when we're asked," Folds said. "It's really funny. We hadn't had any offers to do anything. I guess it's all self-motivation."
The group finally got together in a studio for a week to record three new tracks for the compilation, which led to their official reformation.
It is not the first time that Ben Folds Five have regrouped during their hiatus. In 2008 they performed a one-off gig to raise money for the Operation Smile charity, where they played their 1999 album in full.
