Blink 182 Discuss Upcoming Album

Blink 182 haven’t completed their comeback album – but frontman Tom DeLonge says you can hear exactly how it will sound by listening to the three members’ side-projects.

What’s more, it hasn’t required a great deal of effort to put together, because the band are working better than they went their separate ways in 2004.

Speaking at Leeds on the anniversary of their friend DJ-AM's death, DeLonge tells Rock Radio’s Andrew Watson: "The band seems to have doubled or tripled in size since the breakup. It’s explosive, it’s electric – we don’t need to do any work on it.

"I feel like a little kid full of wonder. I can’t comprehend the size of these shows. We’re getting on better than we ever have, and there’s a confidence there now. We love what we do and we know we do it pretty well."

Discussing the follow-up to 2003’s self-titled release, DeLonge explains: "The record will be very modern, relevant, fast and fun. It’ll be a mixture of drum’n’bass, indie rock and stadium rock. I can’t say we’ve done that before, but you can see the tip of the iceberg on the last record.

"Anyone who listens to my band Angels and Airwaves will know where I sit musically. If you imagine that, mixed in with what the other guys do in their spare time, you get it. It’s going to be a really great collaboration of the best of three different genres of music."

While Blink are enjoying playing in the UK and Europe, with DeLonge grateful for the crowds’ passion throughout their tour, he says the shows aren’t quite as spectacular as those they’ve played in the US.

He explains: "We brought the big stage set, but we had to cut it back a bit. There’s a very big, heavy and complex rigging system we used when Travis Barker is flying about on his drumset. We built a new one here and we’re pretty much able to do what we want, but it’s still not what we did in the States."

Thanks for the report to RockRadio.

Blink's not supposed to be big and epic, they're supposed to tell cock jokes, and bang out three chords real quick.

seriously, their self-titled release was pretty solid, but if it sounds anything like Tom DeLonge whining for an entire album like his other band, i'm out

Really? I thought take off your Pants/Enema were the better albums?
I mean 'Fuck a Dog' was just genious & so was 'Happy Holidays'.
Either way, I'm hoping for a more Mark influenced album, as I prefer his music in +44 over A&A.

My favorites were Enema and TOYPAJ, I like Tom's whiny Blink voice, not the AVA one...

i hope they wont finish that album ..i can barely find a bad song in their other albums even in the selftitled that was more commercial and less fun and if tom cant play though one song without totally ****ing it up i think ill find plenty in the new album

People hoping it´ll be as the old Blink-182 better give up, if you have read all the articles about blink 182 after they reunited you should know they all have different directions musically. Tom DeLonge said he wants to mix his AvA inspired music into blink wich means no more dude ranch 3-chord ben wah balls songs.

lunchboxattacks wrote on 08/30/2010 - 01:13 pm / quote |
How can it be the Blink 182 of old? These men have grown up and as I recall when I watched that performance they did on letterman/leno or whatever it is, Delonge had quite a serious face as he played the song and you didn't really sense a pallyness between the members. So I wouldn't hold out for the old happy go lucky Blink. This will be a mature blink dealing with thoughts and themes of a more serious nature. The problem is that goes against the original character of the band.

DNB from Blink 182?

Lmfao, yeah right.
I bet he meant literally drum percussion and bass guitar rather than the actual DnB genre.

charlie__flynn wrote on 08/30/2010 - 01:22 pm / quote |
I don't think there's any need to worry about them telling cock jokes and being immature, I saw them at Leeds fest the other night and after every other song they'd be talking about balls or blow jobs, one of the best gigs ever.

I'm not a big fan of Blink, but I do like a few of their songs. It might be because I like to listen to stuff that's challenging to play so when I hear this I'm like, "wow that's easy" but I will say that they do have a pretty big fan base and the way they are able to use the same chords in different orders and different keys to make a new and different song is pretty talented and creative. I'll have to see how the album turns out.

This album can be made one of two ways...

One, they'll have 3 songs that sound like A&A, 3-4 songs that sound like +44, and 3 songs that sound like Travis' Soldier Boy rap remixes or whatever the hell it is he's doing now.

Two, they'll actually try to meld all 3 styles into each and every song, resulting in something that sounds like total dog****.

Also, it's funny that the interview was with Tom but the photos are of Mark.

their last album was really good, and so is their older stuff. im really looking forward to this album because its going to include all 3 of them with their own likes in genres and musical styles, and putting them together i hope will produce something so great. and toms whinyness is what makes tom, i mean come on, haha well i hope they have a lot of songs where tom and mark sing at the same time.

I'm sure it'll be kind of like the last album, which might even be my favorite one out of them all. It really showed growth in a way most bands wouldn't dare to try, and it worked out perfectly

TJ1991 wrote on 08/30/2010 - 05:52 pm / quote |
As long as Mark sings on it, it'll be ok. Tom's voice is absolutely shocking, always has been, and Mark's is great. I've never, ever understood why they let Tom sing as much as he does. But then again it was probably Mark and Travis standing up to Tom that broke them up in the first place.

"It’ll be a mixture of drum’n’bass, indie rock and stadium rock"

not to be a stick in the mud, because im not a blink fan by any stretch of the imagination but i highly highly doubt that this will incorporate any elements attached to actual drum n bass or indie/stadium rock. By that prediction the new blink album would sound like Jojo Mayer, Queen and Silversun pickups put together... it doesnt matter if your a fan of the band or not but you'd be lying if you said this album will be anything more than generic alternative pop

I cannot wait for the next album! And you people who say they got back together for money are IDIOTS!!!

I mean, look at their net worths
Tom DeLonge-$60 million
Mark Hoppus-$60 million
Travis Barker-$70 million

I believe they got back together because they reconciled and really wanted to make music together again.

THIS^^^
the only blink songs i find bareable to listen to have marc at the front on vocal duties. I never understood why people loved Tom's singing. Its not even a matter of taste wether its live or in the studio Tom's singing is atrocious, out of tune, and very whiny. Marc on the other hand actually has a good voice and isnt a bad bass player.... why doesnt he just start his own band? haha

newageweirdo wrote on 08/30/2010 - 06:15 pm / quote |
most of the songs are gonna be catchy as hell like 2 and 3 albums ago. Tom sings because its that whiny and off-key sounds he can do with his voice. that you cant get hardly anywhere else, and it still works. if you say someshit about i dont want it to be whiny...then you dont want blink. regardless what you think about toms other band you must of forgot wtf blink 182 is.
im curious how powerful the guitars are gonna be on this album if they have more members. if thats what he meant by doubled or tripled in size. or is that just the fame? the best example of the new album might be Downand Anthem

I'm not surprised it's going not going to be a pop-punk album: you can tell they aren't going to do that from listening to self-titled, Angels and Airwaves, and +44. However, I'd like to hope it's going to lean towards the +44 side of things rather than the AVA side, as did enjoy +44 a lot more than AVA.

I hope that Tom is aware we don't want blink to give us an AVA record. He still has AVA going, and that's where the AVA music belongs.

I've got to say, if the new record is anything like the self titled album, I will be a very happy panda! I think that album was quite solid in comparison to some of their former releases. I haven't really heard much from Angels & Airwaves, nor +44 for that matter, but from what I have heard, I think the album is likely to progress the 'Blink' sound and take it to another level. I saw the Reading festival performance and they were great...though Tom's singing voice has changed so much and almost don't fit the songs anymore.

i love blink, but i just cant stand angels and airwaves. i'm not gonna whine about tom's singing (how ironic) but i've gotta say that while near-40 year-olds shouldn't necessarily be writing songs like "happy holdiays you bastard", similar bands (green day, for instance) have faced the same problem and haven't completely destroyed their sound in the process (let's not bring green day into this any more please). blink needs to deliver on what we all want to hear IN ADDITION TO their musical growth a la +44 and a&a.
