Bob Dylan Works On New Album

Bob Dylan is recording his first album of new songs in five years, according to NME.com. He reportedly spent four days last week rehearsing the material with an unspecified band, prior to entering a studio this week.

The album is planned as the long-awaited follow-up to 2001's "Love & Theft", and follows the success of the soundtrack to Martin Scorcese's 2005 biopic, "No Direction Home".

Dylan and five unnamed musicians rehearsed the new material from Tuesday to Friday (January 31-February 3) last week behind closed doors at the Bardavon Opera House in Poughkeepsie, New York, reports the local paper The Poughkeepsie Journal.

"It was experimental, all kinds of different licks," according to the venue's executive director Chris Silva, who watched the sessions. "They would get into one thing and they would go over it and over it, then they would change gears."

Silva added that Dylan rehearsed for four to five hours each day without a break, and indicated that recording sessions would start in a Manhattan studio this week.

Since the release of "Love & Theft", the only new Dylan recordings to appear have been on film soundtracks. The most recent, "Tell Ol' Bill", was released on the OST to the Nick Caro-directed film "North Country".

i agree with your statement, but this isn't about either of them. dylanis an incredible musician, and lyricist. as far as country goes, i'd rather listen to bluegrass, but nashville skyline, along with johnny cash is probably the greatest example of good country in history. good too see he's still rappin to the fuzz

dylan should not be compared to hendrix or clapton...they are completely different ballparks. henrix and clapton are godly guitarists, Dylan isalmost universally known as teh best songwriter ever.while clapton speaks with a stratocastor, dylan speaks with words.

I saw Dylan live a few months ago and can honest;y say that I hated it. I haven't liked any of his new albums. I'm not too excited about this. The move 'High Fidelity' asked the right question: Is it better to burn out than fade away?

I wasn't a huge fan of most of his stuff from the late seventies/eighties and I haven't heard any of his newer stuff. I'm excited to hear what it's like.

I must say though, he looks like one of those old asian martial arts gurus with the beards in that pic. Weird that he would straighten his hair...

Dylan's my favourite artist of all. I like the way he sings too, nothing beats Dylan singing those words. And yeah I read Chronicles, he was saying he liked NWA I think, or Public Enemy? Not sure, but he likes some rap.

A couple of dudes were wondering why his back-up musicians aren't named. Well, check out www.expectingrain.com and click the news link 'Bob Dylan rehearses new album at The Bardavon' for a fuller story than the one posted on UG.

And, just to set the record straight, Dylan *can* sing. Anybody who says he can't clearly has some issues with rock music, since almost no rock musician in the last 40-50 years has had any vocal training, or needed any.

I saw him last november at Manchester's MEN Arena, and he ROCKED THE HOUSE DOWN. His voice was spot on, and I have high hopes for the new album. Rock on, Bob.

So sad how hung up everyone is on musicians' looks these days. Hendrix never worked his pecs the way li'l ol' Lenny Kravitz does, but where would Lenny be without his physique? This picture of Dylan is from his appearance at Newport a couple years back, his return to the stage where he was booed for bringing an electric band back when he was the folk god in the sixties. The getup in the picture is a wig, probably his joke as a disguise coming back into hostile territory. Dylan's voice may be an acquired taste, but he was nominated for best rock vocal a couple years ago, and had won it further back in the past, so he must know something. Re: the unnamed band, it's the band itself which doesn't have a name. He had a pretty consistent backing band for a few years, but he's subbed in others more recently. Clapton, by the way, has been part of his backing band on a lot of albums, and Hendrix covered him repeatedly. If this album's half as good as the last two, I'll be happy.
