Coldplay To Give Away New Album

artist: coldplay date: 02/18/2009 category: upcoming releases
rating: 0 / votes: 0

Coldplay's Chris Martin has revealed the band are planning to release a live album for free this summer.

The band want to give the record away to fans as they attend their stadium gigs in September.

"What we want to do is try to give away a live album for free," Martin told The Sun.

The singer said that one idea behind the album was to provide respite to fans who are struggling with the current economic crisis.

"We're playing a lot of shows in the summer and I think what we would like to do is - bearing in mind the recession we are in - record the live album then give it as a gift," he added.

"We are just trying to work out how to do that. It's obviously a bit tricky in terms of record contracts and things but it would be great. Its a way of saying thank you. It's a tough economy and people are paying a lot of money for tickets.

"We are trying to work out a way that, when you hand your ticket in at the door, you get given the recording. It would be such a cool thing to do."

Coldplay are set to play the following dates:

Manchester Old Trafford Cricket Ground (September 12)
Dublin Phoenix Park (14)
Glasgow Hampden Park (16)
London Wembley Stadium (18, 19)

Thanks for the report to Nme.com.

Why not just have codes on the ticket that allow you to download a copy of the show?
Coldplay is hitching off Radiohead again , and sucking at it , again.

This is Coldplay riding on the coattails of Radiohead (free album, albiet horrible quality and then making you buy the album later), NIN (completely free album and optional purchase if you want physical copy along with releasing that 1 billion gigs of live footage), and Linkin Park (who record all their US live shows and give out the mixed soundboard recordings for free to all who attended).

I'll check it out, but this is far from ingenious.

And who the hell wants to spend an entire gig holding some low quality pos live cd in their hand?

Copyright has nothing to do with money, it's about deciding how your music is used. Even if you don't make a cent, it's still copyright infringement if you don't have the author's permission.

And to most people posting here, give it a rest. They're doing a very generous move that'll cost them a fair bit of money and you complain about it. If Coldplay cured AIDS you'd complain about it. Just because they'll obviously get some future benefits from doing this doesn't mean the masses of people who go see these guys don't appreciate this move.

I don't get you people. Okay I admit, I'm a Coldplay fan for quite some time now, but despite that this is a very good initiative. The ticket prices will be the same. They aren't the ones setting the prices. Promoters are. Which explains why ticket prices vary from country to country. I think this a very nice idea. It's good to remember the show after it. Just hopw they bring that tour to Portugal. I've been wanting to see them for months now!

Satch clearly stole that riff from Enanitos Verdes' "Frances Limon". Coldplay's just not very good at stealing music.

Also, to clear things up, Radiohead's album wasn't free. It was "pick your own price", so you only got the album for free if you were a spineless prick with such a lack of respect for their music that you couldn't come off of $10-$15 to support them.

Enough of the plagiarism shit, a court case will decide whether or not they stole from Satriani.

Coldplay is good, Satch is good, Radiohead is pretty okay I guess. Just because they don't play your style of music doesn't mean they suck.

Brownie points for Coldplay.

Hey, everyone talking about this being a rip off of Radiohead, think about why Radiohead would give away their album. They wanted to set an example for the rest of the music industry and try to change the model. I think Radiohead would probably be really happy to see Coldplay doing something similar.
Now, about the album being shite quality. Have any of you ever owned a live album? It's not like videos you see on youtube. Each instrument/mic goes separately into a soundboard and it's all mixed to a very good quality, and I would also assume that they are recording each show, in which case you would get the album on the way out.

Stop looking for nit-picky reasons to criticize a band that care about music and care about their fans.

There are plenty of bands that earn less than them that have 5 dollar shows so illegal downloading is not a excuse. Also plenty of bands have released tons of stuff for free without the concert ticket so coldplay fails.

In the digital age where the record companies are hammering us with the image that they can't afford to let a single person get away with a free song, it's good to see another band handing out free music.

Jesus with the radiohead ripoff comments
Maybe they DID get the idea off radiohead

when did it become such a crime to see someone doing something they liked and think "oh wow, we should try that too"?

Well they are masters at that. In fact Joe Satriani is sueing them for it!

Joe Satriani's just mad that Viva La Vida is much better song (Of course this isn't true, but it's fair game compared to all the retarded comments favoring Joe)

Btw these comments would not be NEAR as critical if it were any other band. People need to stop whining about the lawsuit Coldplay wrote the ****ing song. They aren't the first to do it but it's good that they're following suit in trying new things.

Coldplay should be informed that even if they don't make money off of this albulm they can still be sued for copyright infringement when their product reduces the commercial value of Joe Satriani's songs

They aren't onto anything, The Grateful Dead and Dave Matthews have been encouraging people to record and distribute their concerts for free since before the digital age of music

I can't begin to tell you how wrong that is. Many metal fans like classical, ballads, jazz, blues etc. Alot of people who like metal like Viva La Vida too. And lyrically coldplay are better then the average radio pop-rock type band, yet many metal bands have arguably better lyrics.

sure, all the metal-heads generally hate coldplay and whatever, but you guys all haven't got a clue what goes on in metal either.

Listen up - I really don't give a crap about who copied whose idea, I like this idea - I paid a freakin huge amount to see coldplay this march in sydney and if I do get a free live cd it would be a great gesture

So you hate coldplay? If a band you liked did this, you would probably like it. Yes, the ticket price does pay for it, but at least they're doing it

Also if they make the CD exclusive to live shows it really does give back to the fans (even though it will end up as a torrent) >_

Its a LIVE recording though. For $100 tickets. Not like they're doing some grand gesture by giving away new songs or something. I'd rather stay at home and listen to the same songs at superior quality.

The whole argument works both ways. The typical person who listens to things like coldplay would probably claim a dislike of metal, basing their judgement on the stereotype around it, which isn't really a solid reason. Im not saying he's completely wrong, just that metalheads aren't as dumb as he's implying.

And you wont often see people complaining about heavy metal on heavy metal posts, because it usually just results in a flame war. Metalheads are very protective.

I'll check it out, but this is far from ingenious.

I think they are trying to create some crazy loophole in order to get out of being sued for plagerism, think about it. Why would one of the most expensive bands out there right now give away a free CD because of people having money troubles? Sounds shady. Either that or their as rich as Oprah and can afford to give away a free CD to everyone, whats next a free car?

But people do go to see oldplay live, coz its the big teenage party in town and all the socialite children go there, just the cool thing to do! And now they get a free gimmick full of lousy performances and Radiohead, Joe Satriani rip-offs.
