Cynic: 'Re-Traced' Artwork, Track Listing Unveiled

On May 17, reunited progressive rock/metal band Cynic will release a brand new EP entitled "Re-Traced", featuring reinterpretations of four songs from the group's critically acclaimed "Traced In Air" album as well as a previously unreleased song.

"'Re-Traced' is an experiment for us — an opportunity to turn four songs from 'Traced in Air' inside out and to share something new", comments frontman Paul Masvidal.

"In our exploration, we've created music that is part 'sci-fi prog folk,' part psychedelic rock, part minimalist restraint. These interpretations feel channeled from another galaxy.

"For the most part, the tunes reference some of our favourite musical forms and in our own curious way (electronic/ambient, jazz/fusion, drum n' bass, experimental, shoegaze). There is no vocoder, no traditionally busy CYNIC riffs that are some of our most signatures sounds, but the music retains its song structure, integral melodic sense, harmony and lyrical inspiration."

Masvidal on the new song: "It is entitled 'Wheels Within Wheels' and it is the most rock/metal tune on the EP. Mood-wise it has a melodic optimism that is a bit more transparent than in other Cynic songs, giving it a unique and emotive color.

"We are really pleased with the performances and energy of this track. Considering this song is perhaps the closest reference to a familiar CYNIC sound, it still leaves behind many of the former trademarks and introduces a new shade of groove and dynamic.

"Progressive music has many faces, and that is always the name of the game for Cynic: reinventing ourselves and pushing our own musical boundaries for ourselves and our fans."

"Re-Traced" track listing:

01. Space
02. Evolutionary
03. King
04. Integral
05. Wheels Within Wheels

Oh hell yes! Cynic is one of the best bands of the last twenty years no doubt (chew up and spit out all these shitty metal bands right now!)

I like the way they work. They take the time they need, whether it's 10 years or just months, but they make sure everything clicks, and up to now, they've always delivered. Short but very thought releases; I wouldn't mind them being a bit longer, but I think it makes the experience more intense.

PS: Masvidal is indeed one of the greatest guys I've ever met, few times had I seen an artist so close to the audience.

New track will be good. I love that these guys can really just vomit amazing riffs and then turn it into an album. Evolutionary Sleeper is definitly one of my favourite songs of all time.

Yessss, this should be pure awesomeness.

Too bad there is no reinterpretation of "The unknown guest", but well, maybe it doesn't fit this style of reinterpretation. Well see how it goes.

I am so pumped for this. The new song was incredible live, and I'd love to see re-imaginings of some of these songs from the last album

Every member of that band seems so at peace with everything, and so spiritual. I wish I could have that sort of sense of calm.

These guys are Awesome. Everyone in the band in ridiculously talented and the songwriting is outstanding. The samples I've heard from the EP are far from "metal" but still mindblowingly awesome. Wheels Within Wheels was great live.

Cynic is amazing! And I think I find it surprising that UGers haven't said anything bad about them.. Yes, I said it. Most people on this website are just stupid.. I only really use it for reading the news and some tabs. Which is useful! Don't get me wrong. :O

well when they play as technical as they do u should relize that they cant spend 5 minutes making an album like modern rock with their cheesy lyrics and power chords cynic goes all out true their was a long split between the albums but it was worth it

Re-thinkings of Evolutionary sleeper, King of those who know, The space for this and Integral birth?

And a new song?

I might as well die with happiness. I can't wait.

Technicality has nothing to do with it. the fact that as a band, they didn't exist from 1994 to 2006 has everything to do with a lack of an album. Closest we got in that time was Gordian Knot's "Emergent".

now, have they really re-recorded some of traced in air's songs acousticly? because i remember them mentioning that at a concert. they also exclaimed they were tripping on acid.

These guys have a really cool sound but all of the songs I've heard sort of sound the same.

Someone recommend me some really good Cynic songs, like the standout tracks from each album.

There are only two albums. How they sound the same, I don't know... but my favorites are:
Veil of Maya
I'm But A Wave To
How Could I
The Eagle Nature
Integral Birth
Space For This

anyway, can't wait for this release. I've heard the preview video, and the reworked songs sound a bit shoegazey/spacey. Should be awesome.
