The group has been working on their next release for quite some time now, but Death Cab For Cutie claim their new record is their top priority in 2010. In an interview with MTV, guitarist Chris Walla gave an update on how far the band had progressed with the new album.
"We're really just starting to crack it open, like kind of getting into the demos for the first time, bouncing some ideas back and forth," he said. "So we haven't dived in and hit the 'record' button yet. We're trying to figure out when to dive in and hit the 'record' button. That's sort of where we're at."
In 2009,
Death Cab For Cutie found themselves constantly busy as their contribution to the
New Moon soundtrack was named the lead single and frontman
Ben Gibbard later got engaged to actress/musician
Zooey Deschanel. Because of such a crowded year, the band insists recording new material is what they're solely focused on.
"We've definitely cleared space [in our schedule]. It's the project this year for us," said drummer Jason McGerr. "But we don't know where we're going yet."
The group's last release was The Open Door EP back in March 2009, which is currently nominated for for Best Alternative Music Album for the 52nd Grammy Awards.
