Dream Theater Announces New Album Title And Track Listing

American progressive metal veterans Dream Theater have revealed the title and track listing for its upcoming new full length album. The album has been given the title of "A Dramatic Turn Of Events" and will feature 9 tracks. Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess commented on the album, which is planned for a September 20, 2011 release through Roadrunner Records, by saying;

"We have poured our hearts and minds into the creation of this album. All the life changing events that surrounded us before, as well as during the whole process, fueled our desire to dig deep within ourselves and create the best music we possibly could."

The album's track listing is as follows;
1. On The Backs Of Angels
2. Build Me Up, Break Me Down
3. Lost Not Forgotten
4. This Is The Life
5. The Shaman's Trance
6. Outcry
7. Far From Heaven
8. Breaking All Illusions
9. Beneath The Surface

Usually it was Rudess, Petrucci and Portnoy.

Song titles sounds like something Rush would do, doesn´t sound like DT song titles. But defineately looking forward to this, i think the previous couple of albums was a little stale(despite of a couple of awesome songs), and i think it will be a nice change of pace with some new blood.

The title of the new album just seems to me like they keep dwelling on the fact Portnoy left and keep overly dramatizing it. I actually agree with Pagan_Poetry on that one.

This is the most number of songs they've put on an album since "Scenes From A Memory". Maybe this means shorter songs and less wanky instrumental passages? That would be interesting. The song titles seem less heavy metal cliched as well, and like Rimfrost said, more like Rush song titles.

So, place your bets. "On The Backs Of Angels" is John Myung's lyrical contribution, and "The Shaman's Trance" is John Petrucci's heavy metal thing ala "Dark Eternal Night" or "Count Of Tuscany"?

Somehow "Build Me Up, Break Me Down" reminds me of "Forsaken". 2nd song, sounds like it has a "poppish" vibe. And "The Shaman's Trance" is propably a really long very progressive song. Could be completely wrong, though.

Album title is pretty lame. Its funny I too thought "Build me up, break me down" is a Labrie feature and "the shamans trance" is a proggy instrumental piece. This album looks like its going to be an amazing one because they have more feelings to express than they had for the last two albums. IM PUMPED! cant wait to see the youtube vids of the new song they play on their euro tour

The Shaman's Trance sounds a lot more like Jordan than Petrucci. Sounds like something straight from one of his instrumental albums. Can't wait to f-ing hear it though!

This has Labrie written all over it... Unfortunately. I doubt it'll be anywhere near as bad as something from Static Impulse though. I trust the rest of the guys to keep stuff like that from happening. Then again... There were a couple tracks on Octavarium that started to take that direction.

If I were placing bets "On the Backs of Angels" is a Petrucci track (i draw that conclusion from previous things like The Ministry of Lost Souls and other stuff like The Spirit Carries On) I expect it to slightly be a ballad-type song but not so much that it's cheesy or unbearable. I expect excellent guitar-work on this. However, I expect James to give this song its cheesiness like he does on some things. "This is the Life" is a title that kind of worries me... It'll either be completely epic or just so-so. I don't think they can produce anything that is "bad" but it won't be in the middle ground. Great or one to forget.
