Dream Theater: New Album Title, Track Listing

Progressive metal veterans Dream Theater have set "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" as the title of their tenth studio album, due on June 23 via Roadrunner Records. In addition to the standard-version CD, the effort will also be available on vinyl LP, as well as a three-disc, special-edition CD that will include the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs, the titles of which will be revealed at a later date.

Six weeks prior to the June 23 street date, Roadrunner will release one cover song per week through digital retailers.

Dream Theater commenced work on "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" — the band's second for Roadrunner, following up 2007's "Systematic Chaos" — in October of last year.

Drummer Mike Portnoy and guitarist John Petrucci are once again at the helm as producers, while Paul Northfield mixed the record.

"Black Clouds & Silver Linings" track listing:

01. A Nightmare to Remember
02. A Rite of Passage
03. Wither
04. The Shattered Fortress
05. The Best of Times
06. The Count of Tuscany

A video for the first single, "A Rite Of Passage", will be shot in late March.

Mike Portnoy played a one-minute "teaser" for the band's forthcoming album on the February 27, 2009 edition of Eddie Trunk's "Friday Night Rocks" radio show on New York's Q104.3 FM. The clip is available for streaming here.

Portnoy previously stated about the upcoming CD, "Imagine a Dream Theater album with 'A Change Of Seasons', 'Octavarium', 'Learning To Live', 'Pull Me Under' and 'The Glass Prison'... all on one album... Could You Handle It?? Excited? I sure am!!!!"

The band will embark on a world tour in support of the album beginning in Europe throughout June which will be followed by the second edition of the band’s "Progressive Nation" tour featuring Zappa Plays Zappa, Pain Of Salvation and Beardfish throughout North America in July/August.

Mike Portnoy will guest on "Eddie Trunk Live" on Sirius (channel 19) / XM Radio (channel 53) on Monday, March 16. The program airs from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. EST.

Dream Theater's "Chaos In Motion 2007/2008" double DVD set sold just under 9,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 2 on the Top Music Videos chart.

Thanks for the report to Blabbermouth.net.

Yeah, knowing dream theater, nothing on here is under 10 minutes, especially with Mikes comment-"Imagine a Dream Theater album with 'A Change Of Seasons', 'Octavarium', 'Learning To Live', 'Pull Me Under' and 'The Glass Prison'... all on one album..."- that alone is going to make June 23 seem like a decade away. I'm so stoked for this. The titles sound really heavy to, which definately isnt a bad thing. Best news of the day.

I remember about last june when I bought the greatest hits album I read something that Mike said about recording for the new album in september. I was stoked since then and the greatest hits album and the chaos in motion tour dvd has kept me a little sane since then but I have been constantly waiting for a single to be released and I have been going crazy. But now I see this and all that waiting will soon finally pay off I can't wait I must have it!!!!!

Well I guess if they DIDN'T finish the AA Suite on this one, that gives more chance for an 11th album =P But I bet they will... I really like the Album cover too- it's very Awake-esque.

Anyone think LaBrie goes for the F# again =P I mean, yeah he shattered his voice and stupidly went on tour anyway... but it's been 15 years so... hopefully he's closer to the top of the treble cleff than ever =)

I also really wonder what the covers are...

Anyway, for the first time I'm actually excited about Dream Theater's long songs... after listening through them more properly lately I've realized they do perform their best when they have lots of space to do it in. And let's hope JP doesn't straighten his hair for the new video.

I agree. That was the first thing I thought when I saw it. I don't know, I haven't listened to much DT at all recently, since I've been in a permanently crap mood for several months, but I'm going to pick this one up. Hopefully, they'll have some nice moody songs on there. And maybe, just maybe, JP will play awesome melodic solos like he used to.

I figure the six cover songs must be what he was refering to when he mentioned Seasons in that "Imagine a DT album etc etc"

I think a Nightmare to Remember or Shattered Fortress would be the AA song... but you never know. I think the AA song WILL be on here though because in the teaser, theres a lyric that says stuff about forgiveness...

I hope it's different then systematic chaos.

Systematic chaos featured very cool riffs, but that was the only good thing.

The epic parts and melodies, were e bit too "Simple" and I didn't feel that DT epicness, but ye first record with new Record label, is always bound to be a bit of a warming up.

I think they made systematic chaos, since they are on a more metal label now. I think they wanted to "Show" or try to fit in in the label.

I think now they did that, that they will bring out pure DT back, with sick melodies, long compositions, changes, crazy instrumental breaks and all that good ol DT stuff that makes you smile

I'm so stoked for this. The titles sound really heavy to, which definately isnt a bad thing. Best news of the day.

Yep "The Best of Times" sounds reeeeally heavy... honestly stating that things are going to be heavy is quite possibly the stupidest thing you can do about music. It says nothing for the quality of the songs.

Generic surrealism is still generic. People are commenting about how it is similar to Awake's cover art. Cheap move by DT. We've been there, we've done it, try something different. "Every cloud has a silver lining". Of course there's no album with a similar name, most artists have common sense in avoiding common proverbs when it comes to naming albums. I guess in that sense, DT are ungeneric for going generic.

lol, trying to work my superior English skills against me won't work. As I suggested and by implication, anything that isn't based on a common proverb is good. Heck, 'The Blackening' is a fine album name, supported by solid cover art. Megadeth's cheesy album titles and cover art is well in line with their music and themes.

not many people buy live DVD's.

I dont think that this is generic at all. In fact, i think it is in perfect fit with how Dream Theater is a constantly moving band. Where nothing is repeated. The only reason people equate teh album artwork with awake's is that it is a spacial environment. other than that it is completely different.

The name is also fitting in with what dream theater has done in the past. I feel that Mike Portnoy had a major hand in naming this album because of his past. More or less, i expect this album to be more personal with all the members of the band.

What are the AA series? I'm confused. And slightly embarased

The AA series is all about mikes battle with acohol
Part I: The Glass Prison
Part II: This Dying Soul
Part III: Root Of All Evil
Part IV: Repentence
Part V: The Shattered Fortress (assuming but most likly)

Well, that's correct if you're going by songs, but each song represents several steps in the Alcoholics Anonymous program - 12 steps total, therefore 12 parts total in the 'alcoholics anonymous suite' Portnoy's put together... all strangely starting with 'R.'

well possibly shattered fortress will be broken into 3 or 4 movements, almost or fully completing the suite.
