Evanescence Ready To Return Despite Troubles

It's been a rough two years for Evanescence.

Last December singer Amy Lee filed a lawsuit against her former manager, accusing him of sexual harassment and defrauding the band. (He has denied the claims.) Her songwriting partner, Terry Balsamo -- who replaced former partner Ben Moody in 2003 -- had a stroke. (He's since made a full recovery.) Lee split with her boyfriend of two years, Seether's Shaun Morgan. And to top it off, "the cat ran away," says Lee.

"It was all really dramatic and weird." But tragedy creates great material: "It's only made the record that much better, honestly," she says.

Moody's departure meant greater creative control for Lee. "Before, I wasn't allowed to play any organ because Ben didn't like it. This time I could do whatever I wanted, and there's lots of organ. It's all over."

The first single, "Call Me When You're Sober," has remnants of Evanescence's old goth sound, but with woman-scorned lyrics ("You never call me when you're sober/You only want it cause it's over") and a bluesy arrangement of strings and organ, it sounds more Fiona Apple than new metal.

On "Good Enough," a plaintive piano ballad, Lee's voice drops to a lower register, giving it a richness and nuance not present on previous albums. "I just feel purified," says Lee. "I still listen to the album now, and it couldn't mean more to me."

Evanescence will release "The Open Door" on October 3 through Wind-Up Records.

Thanks for the info to SMN.

Go Evanescense. I've been waiting for their album, but all this lawsuit crap is just getting annoying...I'm sure they feel the same way too.

Amen to that. But you can't knock Evanescence, they're great vocally and their lyrics mean alot to people. Turniquet not only has a great riff but i know a couple of people who can relate to what they say.

travislausch wrote on 06/19/2006 - 11:09 am / quote |
You know, out of all the "trendy" bands lately, I think Evanescence is definitely one of the better ones out there. They have a lot of talent, and some decent songwriting skills too. Who's fault is it that they're "popular" and "trendy"? Your own. So you can't really knock them for being a big label band. And yes, Nightwish is awesome, but I got a feeling that you'll all enjoy Mexican "prog-goth" band Elfonia too (www.elfonia.com). Their singer, Marcela Bovio, appeared on Ayreon's album "The Human Equation", and is working on a new project with Arjen Lucassen. Her voice is kind of similar to Lee's, and the band sounds like a lighter Evanescence with more guitar solos

She didn't have enough control before? It was practically Amy Lee and My Damn Backup Band more than it was Evanescence. If you must listen to music like this, at least listen to Nightwish, because they are better.

evanescence = nickelback for girls.

Has anybody noticed that every line in their lyrics has the word "you" or "yours"?? I can't take that stuff anymore. And a song with a piano is not deep, it's still a shit song with a piano.

Even mentioning that they're goth should be punished by crucifiction. It's as is Lacrimosa and Evanescence were playing the same genre....

Origin was superb, it's a shame there are no male vocals on "Fallen" that added to the effect and personally, I think male vocals in a female-fronted band balances it out a bit. Don't ask why, I just like it when there are male and female vocals.

Am I the only one who feels this relates to that story about the man stranded at sea, who denies 3 rescues saying god will save him, and when he dies he asks god why he didn't save him, and god replies that he sent 3 rescue atempts?

Take the hint amy. And before someone says "if u dont liek them go away n00b lol PwNeD", I do like them. It just seems a greater power here hates amy lee.

I really can't wait for this album.... but i still think they aren't the same without Ben Moody, and i thk that the organ will generate a nice feel for this band... it'll suit them well, just like pianos. it distributes a nice goth sound. As long as they keep their riffs on guitar, it'll be good.

ashlate wrote on 06/19/2006 - 02:12 pm / quote |
I cant waite to hear all the new songs. I think I should go download some of them on limewire untill I can buy the cd. There is no point in sayin how much you hate Amy Lee or how much you think the band sucks because if that is all you are here to say then your oppinion doesn't really matter at all. I'm not saying you have to like the band but if you don't then good for you go away why are you reading anything about the band that you supposedly hate so much... I think you secretely like them but for some unknown reason you want hide the fact that you have excellent taste in music. You can say "I hate the whole gothic image she has." but then if she was just like everyone else she would be just another pretty face with nothing at all different about her. Amy Lee's vocal skill and the lyrics of Evanescence are just plain out amazing. So to that I say Evanescence is my favorite band ever and I am quite excited to hear their new stuff.

...So what you're saying ashlate is that because someone who doesn't like the band has decided to make a comment, their opinion doesn't have any value? Why should someone that does like the bands opinion count for more than the person who holds the opposite view?

Origin is the only Evanescence I like with a couple of exceptions from Fallen (the ones that were also on Origin such as My Immportal etc...).Fallen wasn't a bad album, just wasn't gothic enough as Origin that I wanted it to be.

But i've admitted myself a long time ago, they're gone and won't be to their Origin routes, especially with Terry Balsamo, who unfortunately is a rubbish guitarist.

I'm not having high hopes for this album, but we'll see.

also, they are not "goth." seriously. pop-punk is a giant no as well. dont really know how to classify them.

not sure if anyone else said this already but if you are interested in evanescance you should also check out flyleaf. interesting, to say the least.

However I hope they don't do yet another version of Imaginary or Whisper. They've already got the EP, Origins, Fallen and Anywhere but home version of Whisper, and imaginary has all those versions including 2 demo versions! Well anyway, this is turning out to be a very awesome year. Linkin PArk and Evanescence in the one year.

i just have a problem with people who are all like 'oh my life is so bad' and dont realise that what they have is good. i mean amy lee is rich and famous and in a band. i dont mind moaning but she seems to expect sympathy. in a previous news article she said 'i was so upset i would play pink floyd and jump in the swimming pool with my clothes on' hey if i had a swimming pool and a load of pink floyd albums id be pretty happy.
i think skindred should think before he/she types as he/she is putting words in my mouth. i never criticised her success i said she should appriciate it

neejchee wrote on 06/24/2006 - 09:43 am / quote |
Dude, she never said she was after sympathy. In fact, in numerous interviews she has said she is lucky for all of those things you say she 'moans' about because it makes her music better and more powerful. Dont judge a person or their attitude when you dont even know what it is, especially not based on an article like this, where what is written is obviously not everything she said.

Also, I have no problem with people not liking evanescence, and its fine to state that opinion, but no-one has the right to go bashing her name. There are plenty of bands I cant stand, so I dont bother talking about them. Leave it at that.

On the whole 'lame goth' topic, she herself pokes fun at the idea of her being gothic, since she very obviously isnt. she wears pink, likes cute things and smiles too much. Just because the music is often dark and heavy and she wears some dark coloured and unusual clothes everyone assumes she is gothic.

Pull your heads in people!

What are you saying? A true musician can't hate any instruments. Every riffs of every instruments should be important to your eyes.

Enough with this. I've read somewhere that they denied any comparason with this "Fiona Thing"... Who is she, anyway?

When Lee says that she has more control then before, she's speaking about the music she's doing, about liberty...

Can't compare Nightwish to Evanescence, neither Within Temptation or Lacuna Coil. They all have their own style. It's definitly not the same music.

She didn't have enough control before? It was practically Amy Lee and My Damn Backup Band more than it was Evanescence. If you must listen to music like this, at least listen to Nightwish, because they are better.

lol

(This is respsonding to a majority of the comments)

Amy Lee is gorgeous and has a an amazing voice. Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, ect. are also good bands, but in my opinon, Evananescene is the greatest. And it's not pop-rock, very far from it, it's Goth. And even if Amy Lee is rich and famous and what not, that doesn't mean she has the greatest life ever. Alot of people who seem to have it good, really don't. And I don't know about you, but alot of times when I was in a depressing mood, I would listen to Evanescence, sing my heart out, and feel better. Their music has helped me alot. You can go and have your own opinion, but that's mine, weather you like it or not.

Am I the only one who feels this relates to that story about the man stranded at sea, who denies 3 rescues saying god will save him, and when he dies he asks god why he didn't save him, and god replies that he sent 3 rescue atempts?
