Franz Ferdinand Writing 'Different' Fourth Album

Franz Ferdinand have started writing new material for their fourth album, frontman Alex Kapranos has confirmed.

The Scottish singer/guitarist told BBC that he and guitarist Nick McCarthy had been working on new songs at McCarthy's house for the follow-up to last year's "Tonight… Franz Ferdinand" effort.

"I've been round at Nick's and we've been writing some things, and trying to do things in a different way again," he explained. "You'll hear it before too long."

Kapranos added that he was a touch wary about revealing too much about the writing sessions this early on, however.

"Before the last record I talked far too much about it," he said, "as we had the ideas and I made a vow that I wasn't going to say anything about what we are actually doing until we've done it, and then wait about another three weeks."

Franz Ferdinand are set to tour Australia from the end of this month, followed by some South American live dates.

That album was great, felt they really decreased in quality by the second one, blistering debut album though, really hope they can produce something as good.

Am I the only person that actually preferred their second album? I'd sort of lost interest in them by the time their 3rd came out though and didn't like what I heard from it.

Yup, and that's the one I liked the most. It's a grower (especially for people who aren't that much into rock with hints of electronic music), whereas the 1st record was one of those rare "love at first sight" albums > from the minute I heard these guys I was a fan

I didn't like the "Tonight..." album. Their first two were great, but "Tonight" felt like a step in the wrong direction. It wasn't bad, just not to my tastes.

Self-titled was the best. The others are good too though. I thought they went a bit too electronic on the third though.

I liked the single too, but the remix album thing they had was actually damn good. I think it was called blood... anyway I'm excited to hear what these guys are gonna be up to next!

That song's incredible! They haven't done anything wrong, musically, in my opinion, so I trust they'll keep delivering great stuff.

Tonight... was great for me, 'cause while it had elements of their other albums, the newer elements of it introduced me to a whole new range of music that I hadn't paid much attention to before.

They're a great singles band, but their albums tend to be pretty disjointed and put together very strangely. Tonight... trailed off in the last two tracks, and the first one was full of singles with would be B sides and other outtakes.

They're only truly great album will never be made, it'll be a compilation.

Third never made any year-end lists but was one of the best albums of '09. As for people prodding at their comment of hating guitars, listen to the end of "What She Came For" and realize that no matter what they say they can still use a guitar to kick some arse.

Franz Fer got me back interested in poppy like tunes when they're first album came out. for that alone I always respect them. and their sound. They aren't trying to be the Biggest thing they are just artists like all of us want to be.

cool as long as you go back to the style of the first album and capture the raw energy of that album the 2nd and 3rd were sloppy and didnt hold up as good as the oldies live tbh.

But i fully understand Nicks view cause now the charts are dominated by Franz Ferdinand clones in a weird sense(well were for a time now its swaying back to more electro with gaga and all that)

last album was whack. loved the synths. especially in Lucid Dreams. that synth is awesome towards the end of the song. they are great live. saw them at falls fest 09. on the stroke of new years. best nite of my life!!

Nick has a pretty flippant sense of humor that doesn't always come across in soundbites. They don't literally hate guitars, but I think it's safe to say most everybody is tired by now of the deluge of (esp. British) guitar bands that followed in the Libertines/Strokes/Franz/Kaisers wake.

I've seen them play 5 times, and the most recent gigs have been far superior to the earlier shows, which were already damn good. The songs off Tonight translate really well live. I was on the fence about it at first, but now it's my favorite of theirs by far.

I do kinda agree that their album organization could use a little work-- a lot of their best songs have ended up as b-sides. But I think Tonight marked the start of something really good and I'm excited to see where they'll go next.
