Green Day Eyeing Up Robert Pattinson For American Idiot Film

Green Day have identified Robert Pattinson as the perfect leading man for the film adaptation of American Idiot.

The band are bringing their Broadway musical to the big screen, with the Twilight star band member Billie Joe Armstrong's top choice for a starring role.

When asked about ideas for the leading man, he told PerezHilton.com: "I'm gonna say that kid in Twilight. He’s a good actor. There’s still more to come with that kid."

The musical is inspired by the band's song of the same title, which poses questions to the US government.

American Idiot is scheduled for a 2013 release.

I'll still watch this movie. I don't care about Twilight, if Pattinson makes the cut then i will judge the movie purely on his performance and not previous ventures.

if they were gonna do a movie version, and stage version. they shouldve done it back in 06-07... you know..when the album was still new...lets get back to writing music shall we?

To be fair, there were plans for a film long before the musical ever happened.

Pattinson is also a decent actor. His role in the fourth Harry Potter wasn't bad; it's just the Twilight brand (and his hate for it) that makes him look bad.

I hope Pattinson gets a break with a decent movie to showcase his talents. He's actually not bad at all, did a pretty good job in Remember Me, until the horrible ending came. Was even hoping he'd be cast as the new Spidey. It's amusing how people hate him because "glittery vampires? so stoopid! go die in a ditch!"

I'm pretty sure they don't give two shits about the money. They're richer than God already. And the musical wasn't exactly a financial success, even if it was critically acclaimed, so I'm fairly certain they're doing this stuff because they want to, and not to make a profit. I kinda wish they would let American Idiot go, but hey, if the movie's good, fair play, I'll go see it.

I'm not really sure what this movie is going to be like i can't imagine it is a tom hanks like musical with all the curse words and everything. I hope it is more like a real dark kind of movie/musical, like Tommy. If that is possible, not a goofy musical that shatters the integrity of the record. If that happens I would think Green Day would want to pull the movie, right? Or maybe my assumptions of their integrity are just totally wrong. I would hope they add something extra into the movie so that the album seems even that much better when you listen to it. That is what the who's tommy movie did for me anyway. Imo it makes it okay to make a movie out of an album, because it is actually adding to the artistic quality of the music.

As soon as I read this article I knew the comment section would be full of people slagging off Robert Pattinson just because he is in the Twilight films. I agree with Green Day, he is a great actor but because he is best known for playing Edward Cullen people seem to think he's this dull actor when really he isn't, he's just playing the role. I think he'd be great in American Idiot too

From what I've seen Pattinson is a quality actor. Just watch Water for Elephants, thought he was great in that. He seems to cope plenty because of Twilight, but really; If you were an aspiring young actor, would you not sign on to be a part of a film series that's adapted from one of the best-selling novels in the past decade?

Anyway, I'd be interested in seeing a film adaption for sure. I think it's great that Green Day have so much drive for their projects.

Anyways, I don't hate Robert Pattinson and I don't think he's crap. I don't think he's great either. I think he always falls a bit short. I think he needs to work with a quality director for once, because good directing often comes with great performances. People who say he's bland in Twilight are... well, right. But he's doing it on purpose. He's probably the smartest person on that set.

Quadrophenia was 6 years old when they made a film from it. I don't see anything wrong with the film just because it was so long after the album.

Dude, Tommy by The Who wasn't made into a play and movie until more than twenty years after the album was released. If anything, Green Day is taking this on way too fast.
