Green Day Names Upcoming Album

In a posting on their official website, Green Day has revealed to their eager fans the title of their follow-up to 2004’s Grammy-winning "American Idiot" as well as when we can expect to see it on shelves.

The album, titled "21st Century Breakdown", is planned for a May 2009 release. Speaking with USA Today about the album, singer Billie Joe Armstrong says, "[After the success of American Idiot,] we asked how much more ambitious can we be? We could take a sideways step or go back to our roots. We chose to move forward."

He adds, "It's about reflecting what's been happening the past three years and putting it to melody with some bold statements."

"21st Century Breakdown" will be Green Day’s eight studio album and is currently available for pre-order here. AP Magazine reports that the album will be divided into three acts: "Heroes And Cons", "Charlatans And Saints", and "Horseshoes And Handgrenades".

The way i see it is greenday are very talented. They changed since American Idiot came out so they will probably stay that way. An upset but ive been a fan of greenday since i was 7 so hopfully this album does well , you never kno it could be amazing .

I'm a big classic rock and metal fan, but I've got a soft spot for Green Day. They know how to write a great album and in my opionion every album they've released has been perfect!

The members of Green Day are talented, but not at doing things like American Idiot, in my opinion. I liked them back in the days of Dookie, Insomniac and Nimrod, but didn't care for the direction they took on American Idiot. This sounds like it might be disappointing, as they aren't returning to their roots. I did like Foxboro Hot Tubs and The Network, because it was different than American Idiot.

Man I'm so sick of people picking on this band. When they stick to their roots, their albums don't sell and they break up. When they change their sound, people call them sell outs. I think whether you like them or not, they held the largest punk concert (if you consider them punk) ever, have written songs over the past twenty years that are undeniably tied to the punk/pop movement and were/are one of the biggest bands in the world. So, how about you just wait til the album comes out then you can write about how emo the cover is and how much the music sucks. Then, you can run back down to the basement and look up tabs for for Hitchin A Ride while the boys of Green Day rake in the money and sell out tours, all because they didn't listen to your comments.

Its true, bands need to progess as they mature. However, there are many different ways they can progress, and i personally don't like the way that Green Day chose. I like their new music instrumentally just as much as before, just not topically. Their political views, that is.

i don't understand one thing about all the anti-american idiot stuff. I don't see that album coming out of nowhere and being a sudden break. I think if you start at insomniac and work towards the present, every one of their albums had more of a pop sound than the last. Nimrod was definately softer than insomniac, warning softer than Nimrod. To be honest I think stylistically American Idiot is closer to their roots than Warning was. That doesn't seem to matter though, more importantly to these people is the fact that American Idiot sold a shit load of copies and we're all way to hip to listen to the same cd and 12 year old girls. I've been a fan since I got in 94 Dookie back when I was 13 and although my musical tastes have evolved I still have a sweet spot for Green Day..

I don't get the whole "back to the roots" thing. Green day has evolved in some way on every album so far - but one thing has stayed constant: the ability to write damn good catchy pop/punk/rock tunes.

I think if American Idiot hadn't been played to death it wouldn't get knocked so much. It's a typical case of people hating on the popular to be unique or stand out. while actually doing just the oposite. Plus it cought on with a group of young fans who defended it furiously which tends to annoy people - I think a lot of people hate the fans more than the band.

And the whole sell-out thing.. please! First they sold out when they signed to a major label with Dookie, then they sold out when they put am acoustic ballad (Good Riddance..) on Nimrod and then they sold-out AGAIN o with AI?? Please get another argument if you want to knock them, it's getting a little stale.

I'm not a huuuge Green Day fan. The album name isn't bad but the art looks like My Chem's art work, not that I'm complaining. I just wish that if they're going to write "acts" to a play or a "rock opera" that they really do something with it. Personally, as an actor, I would really like to see these kinds of things pan out to things on Broadway like Tommy.
But, I don't know if they are that talented in the literature portion of their writings to finish it out and write a script, but in any case, I will probably buy the album and listen to it.

a) Look at the lyrics from most of Smoothed's songs. If anything they've done approaches "emo", those do.
b) When they say powerpop, I think about songs like When I Come Around. Very pop-driven.
c) They are way too old to release another Dookie. Early-mid-20s kids can sing about smoking weed and masturbation, but people in their mid-30s can't. They're more politically aware now and it's reflected in their music. Sorry they actually sing about stuff now instead of recycling masturbation and pot smoking 15 times and calling it a record.

Rise Against? They're one of the most boring, radio-friendly alt rock bands around. If you had said something like NoFX you'd have a little more cred.

Green Day has done some very cool things with their sound. They mess around with different genres, write very interesting lyrics that tell a story, and go way beyond simply saying "I HATE THE GOVERNMENT".

And I still laugh my ass off when people say that early Green Day was punk. 1039 had great songs but apart from their cover of Knowledge, the only thing "punk" about it was the fact that they used power chords.

I don't get why people are critisizing them for changing their music. It's their life and career, so they can do what they want. Just because lots of you like Dookie, they shouldn't have to take a step back.

And to those people saying its similar to the MCR cover... The artworks give off completely different vibes. And as a picture, I think its quite good, but I agree as an album cover, they could've done better.

As for the name of the album, they probably should've ued one of the acts, they sound much better.

I apologize for the double post. But I want to point out that I'm not dissing on the emo eyeliner black suit thing because it sucks, I'm dissing on it because greenday doing it sucks. I like MCR (pre-black parade of course) but I don't like when i can compare pictures of the bands and the only real difference is that the guys in greenday are like 15 years older.

consequently, MCR also shed their uptempo punky emo in favor of being totally gay.

I don't think this is going to be very good.

In terms of running parellel to a prevailing social current it will be a sucess, but I'm not optimistic that it'll have any quality where the music is.

American Idiot (and Nimrod) are the records that I can't listen to all the way through.

Green Day were at their best as a 'Ramones-lite' kind of band and I think that they're misguided at best not to return to that.

If you're going to do a departure, do something in the vein of warning - make the departure musical.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to say you don't like greenday, or you do not like what they've become...I for one am not a fan. But it is the up most idiocy to through nonsense phrases like sell out into your argument to say why they are bad.

Greenday 15 years ago never formally made any promise of never releasing a (poor attempt at a...) rock opera...or that they were going to focus on politics, or start wearing eyeliner...as they never established this as one of their moral beliefs. What have they sold out against? They are just doing what they want, and feelings of sell-out is just as silly as when the crowds of 1965 booed because dylan went electric; though obvious dylan is way more profound than greenday.
Greenday have in no way sold out, they have simply matured into a band, that is unrecognisable (to some extent) from before...but then again who can relate to what they have written over a decade ago? As for being emo? I think anyone that knows anything about the hardcore scene will know what a useless term "emo" is in reflection to today's music scene...I do not think there is one band that is emo.
Greenday got famous, because lets be honest for over a decade they were the biggest band of their genre...they had the pop-punk sensibilities of Blink; but also were a little more edgy. With that in mind, a band for a decade selling out 10,000 seat venues all over the world is always going to explode onto the mainstream...and look at everyone who follows. It has nothing to do with what style they moulded to, or anything. If anything for these "immature teens" most complain about, a 7 minutes song is a little more off putting than the catchy earlier material.
Rock music in the last five years, especially in UK has seen a rise into the mainstream, so much so that even shitty disney pop bands have to use guitars to win fans and sell cds.
Greenday are not sell-outs because of this, they were merely riding the crest of a wave as it crashed down over the music business.

while I don't like the political direction Greenday took with American Idiot, I actually liked the music on the album.

Oh Hells yeah. This album is actually going to be closer to Nimrod from what they released on YouTube, if you've heard it. I'm looking forward to what Green Day is going to put out, despite all the shit people are saying about it. I can see what people are saying about it looking like Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, but emo? My Chem used to be an emotional hardcore band, like WAY back, but Green Day never has and never will be emo. (Desolation Row cover was amazing) Album is going to be the shit. Just heard all of 21st Century Breakdown; the song, demo version. It sounds like a punk version of "Bohemian Rhapsody." Which is a lot less pretentious that it sounds. It starts of like Foxboro Hottubs playing a Bruce Springsteen song, then it turns into one of the better suite-parts from Homecoming, then into a Queen ending. Amazing song.
