Green Day Start Recording New Album

Billie Joe Armstrong has Tweeted about Green Day, and reveals the band have officially begun studio sessions on their new album. Armstrong posted: "Happy Valentine’s day! Officially started recording the new record today. It's F*** Time!!!!"

The band have previously said that their forthcoming ninth studio album will move away from the concepts of their last two records, "American Idiot" and "21st Century Breakdown", and be more straightforward.

In November 2011, Green Day debuted a new song, "Carpe Diem", during a live show in San Francisco. The band have previously played new material at live shows, with a more aggressive sound than the pop-rock of recent albums. Working titles reportedly include "Wow, That's Loud" and "Make Out Party". The trio have been demoing material since May 2011.

Billie Joe said at the time: "Here’s the scoop. Green Day has been jamming new songs every day. There’s a ton of new songs. The direction is fresh and high energy. Feels great."

And Green Day’s "American Idiot" musical keeps growing. The musical, which finished a lengthy run on Broadway earlier this year, will visit eight cities in the U.K. beginning in October.

A feature film version of the musical, which is being produced by Tom Hanks, is reportedly in development.

Not necessarily, but he might. He's been in Green Day videos before.

Seriously? You're judging the future of the band on their selection of a producer for a movie? I was no fan of their last album, but neither that nor Tom Hanks are an indication of their future. It's not like their going to re-record the soundtrack to "That Thing You Do".

One thing I've learned about "anticipating" what new albums are going to be like is just not to do it. The amount of times a band has said "we're going back to our old style", or "there will be no concept to this album", or "this will be more like our earlier stuff than our last few albums" and it's been complete horse shit. Let's just wait and see. That being said, I actually liked American Idiot for what it was ;

I hope it doesn't suck. I haven't been loved a Green Day album since Insomniac. I did like Nimrod and there was even some gems on Warning. I bought American Idiot the day it came out. I loved it...then the album blew up and 8 year old kids were wearing Greenday shirts. Record company marketing ruined that album. But even then it is not their best. As for the last one. That's the first album I didn't pay for. I listened to it...Man they jumped the f***** shark with that one. So here's hoping this one doesn't suck.

I get that. It's just that he seemed to be jumping to conclusions. He just seems to have given up on them already. Let's hear the record first. Green Day have been given up on before.Let's just be concerned with them saying what they want to say. That is the most punk thing about them...major label or not.

If you watch the video they released from the first day in the studio, and you freeze it at one point, you can see a partial list of tracks written on a whiteboard behind Rob Cavallo. Since we have nothing better to go off, those are probably going to be the songs on the record. They've played almost all of them at secret shows or soundchecks over the past few years, and they're amazing. I'm anticipating a really great album, no more concept bullshit. AI was amazing, but 21CB was over-conceptualized, even though some of the songs were good.

Haven't actually listened to them properly since American Idiot came out, but I grew up with them from Nimrod so it'd be nice to hear some throwbacks on a new record.
Saying that, I've heard that song they've been premièring live and it doesn't sound anything like their old stuff

I have all of there cds except for the one with the bunny as a logo( sorry I dont know what it's called). To me Greenday has sort of fallen off the radar. I've grown into a different style of music and a new favourite band. They don't excite me the way they used to and it's not because I hate them or anything it's just not my cup of tea anymore. I'm not comfortable about them saying this is going to be a more straightforward album.

It wasn't so much the 8 year old kids as it was me as an adult looking back at my teenage rebellion as a teacher and thinking really? The real nail in the coffin was when at college my English Prof. told us about how he had a copy of it and his four year old would dance to it under a disco ball in the living room. At the time I was thinking damn. Now as I write this I think thats maybe the coolest four year old on the planet?
