Green Day Tap Butch Vig For New LP

Producer Butch Vig has reportedly signed on to produce the next album from Green Day. Vig, a veteran producer, has worked on notable albums like Nirvana's "Nevermind", Jimmy Eat World's "Chase This Light" and Against Me!'s "New Wave" as well as frontman Tom Gabel's solo album, "Heart Burns".

The news comes via Green Day Authority who produced a clip of Vig's Garbage bandmate discussing the job on Carson Daly (watch here).

Very little is known about the highly anticipated new Green Day album, though the band's label let slip that the record is due in 2009. Their last album, "American Idiot", was a massive critical and commercial success and the band followed up the album with the "side project" Foxboro Hot Tubs who released "Stop Drop and Roll!!!" earlier this year.

The reason most Green Day "Fans" don't like American Idiot is because the lyrics were actually meaningful, and you really had to think about what Billy Joe was trying to convey. American Idiot is one of those albums that define a generation. I hope this new one is similar to it. It will be hard to follow such an amazing album though. But if anyone can do it, Green Day can.

Interesting choice for a producer. He was like the "it' guy to get to produce your album back in the 90s. He produced the first two Smashing Pumpkins full length albums (Gish and Siamese Dream). Siamese Dream was truly epic. He pretty much defined the alternative/grunge sound with the big muff pedals and tons of guitar overdubs. That's why Kurt Cobain went with a different producer after Nevermind. He wanted a more stripped down sound.

I thought that their album would have been released by the end of 2008 but 2009 is fine. Just as long as the album is not rushed. I heard that Billie has wrote some songs involving the usage of a piano which is obviously awesome.

I don't think they've lost it.. AI was actually a pretty good album. Their best? No, but pretty good.

The biggest problem with AI was the massive overplaying that went on.. I've been a fan of GD since 94 and even I started to get sick with the exposure they got. (and I never got the whole mascara thing either)

I hope they go in a different dirction for their new album, either back to good ol' GD or something completely new.. They've never been afraid of changing their sound, so it should be interesting..

I've had an empty spot in my CD rack for much too long now, it's about time it got filled I thought the 3 years between Nimrod and Warning were long, but this one seems like it's been taking forever.

In all seriousness though, I'm psyched about their new album, and I hope this one will be as good as their other ones. I hope they mix in some old school Green Day (like 1,039 and Dookie) with the more alternative sound they had on Warning and the strong lyrics they had on American Idiot. That would definitely be an album worth buying! In any case, it'll be awesome! And 2009 is only 2,5 months away!

I was a little worried when I heard Billie Joe was writing from the piano, and this news scares me even more. Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of Butch Vig's work (Nevermind and Siamese Dream are in my all time top 10 favourite albums) but I can't see his production style fitting in with Green Day, unless they're making a big move away from punk rock.

They just put out an album...under a different name. I guess they wrote a lot of songs and wanted an excuse to put them all out close together so they made a "side project" for some of the songs and now will release the rest of the songs. Vig is legend, both in Garbage and his music production.

Green Day were good, and I did like American Idiot, but I was also in my mid teens and liked everything popular. I just want some simple chord driven pop-punk like Jaded or Walking Contradiction. Hopefully it will turn out well, but I'm not 100%.

Oh boy here's where I get to right so many wrongs done to this band.
1. They haul ass, from 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, to American Idiot. It's just in American Idiot they decided to send a message. One they didn't send very well I believe, but they tried. The music is still damn good in AI, and yet all anyone can do is bitch and whine that it's not "The Old Stuff" that everyone is used to. Get over it. Bands change. Just so long as they keep the pop punk formula the same, and not break away into like country or something, then Im down with it.
2. Their so called "Lack Of Skill" Newsflash. Pop punk is SUPPOSED to be comprised of simple power chords and catchy lyrics. As far as Pop punk goes, Green Day is pretty much the best.
3. Sellout? How? I've never understood that. How is it "selling out" when a band decides they wanna do something different? They voiced an opinion they had of the world through an album, BIG DEAL. I love how people whine when a band puts out the same old stuff for years too, make up your mind world.
4. As for defining a generation... Idk. People got the wrong message from the emo makeup thing. It was meant to cover up the fact that they're getting old, and to make fun of the emo community. However it actually caused a disturbing rise in emo kids, and honestly I should punch Green Day for that mistake. Now they have a following of people who most likely have never heard Green Day outside American Idiot.

i think green day is horrible, i cant stand the stupid accent he uses when he sings, i cant stand these stupid music videos where they just pretend to play to thier songs along with the studio recording, try using an accual live performance for your videos. and stop wearing mascara. maybe some piano written music will do them some good and it will make other people relize there are acuually other intruments out there besides guitar bass and drums.

I agree with you about the new album, but Im sick of hearing everyone talk about how crappy they play instruments. Not just ragging on you, but if ppl knew anything theyd learn from the Rolling Stones/ACDC/Judas Priest/etc...that you dont have to be a very good musician to write kick ass songs. Even Jimi Hendrix, who was probably the biggest pioneer of rock today, wasnt the best guitar player ever. So please keep that in mind when you bash a band for writing songs that are easy to play on guitar. PS sorry for the double post.

American Idiot was the first album i ever got. (i was rather later getting into music) and i got it because of all the songs on the radio. i was like, all these songs rule and are way different to the usual pop i hear, and i can proudly say that although i have moved on to metal (judas priest, iron maiden etc) that American Idiot is still my favorite album ever and that i am truly pumped for the new CD.

They will write music how they want to hear it played back and if you don't like it, then feel free to not buy their next album. There will be hundreds of thousands of people to take your place to buy it instead, and I'm proud to be one of them.

Billy Bob Thornton?!? haha Anyways Green Day has always done the unexpected, hell the whole idea behind the song Good Riddance(Time of your life, for those who don't know) was to do the most punk thing they could do, which was be different and original, and the soft acoustic track was the best way they could accomplish that, because that's what punk rock is all about. And as for you people complaining about them "selling out" that happened a long time ago and it should be none of your concern judge the music not whether or not they make money off of it or who does the recording.
