Jimi Hendrix: 'Rock Band' Game Coming

Update: Harmonix confirmed they are not developing a standalone Hendrix game. Jimi Hendrix music coming to Rock Band in the near future will be in the form of downloadable content, or part of a greater collection of songs to be released later in this supposed "new edition."

The ultimate guitar hero, Jimi Hendrix, will soon have his own "Rock Band" video game.

Jimi Hendrix's stepsister, Janie Hendrix, who controls the late guitar god's estate, let it slip during an L.A. Times interview that a Hendrix edition of "Rock Band" will be coming before the end of the year.

The statement was made while discussing the impact of Sony Music's licensing deal for the Hendrix master recordings last year. "At the time the deal was completed," read the article. "Sony vowed to make his music 'available through every type of media' - including a new edition of 'Rock Band' that Janie Hendrix says should appear before the end of this year."

Officials at "Rock Band" publisher MTV Games or developer Harmonix did not respond to requests for comment by press time. The company in December announced its next artist-based game would be focused on Green Day, with a treatment similar to that of "The Beatles: Rock Band" in which various elements of the band's career and development are chronicled. It's unclear whether the Harmonix team has the resources to do both a Green Day and Hendrix special edition in the same year.

However coming out with a Hendrix game this year makes the most sense. There's certainly no shortage of Hendrix-related material coming out in the coming months as the 40th anniversary of his death approaches this fall.

I agree with you ChrisBW my only dislike is that now there will be a bunch of kids out there thinking they can play Hendrix instead of actually learning to play him. I don't like these games simply because they give false hope that everyhting is that easy. So when a kid goes and tries to do it they get discouraged because it is not that easy. I was a drummer when I started playing 20 years ago and now I play guitar I have also played bass and Hendrix is not easy to play or master. I love the fact that they are introducing Hendrix to people who may have not heard him just not in love with the games.

I could also argue that if Jimi were alive today, he'd see what games like Guitar Hero were doing for the state of modern rock guitar and would probably support something that would bring back the popularity of the guitar solo.

You guys are just looking for the cloud on the silver lining. None of us ever knew Jimi, so none of us could know what he would have wanted. The only thing that's really important here is that his estate approved it. We could all protest it at the top of our lungs but that isn't gonna stop something that Jimi's estate wants to see happen.

A lot of great artists seem to think these games are ok at the very least, Megadeth, Tom Morello, The Who, THE BEATLES just to name a few of many.

Except for the part bashing rap (I am not a fan of rap either but I stop short at openly bashing it), I agree with this.

A lot of the haters of Guitar Hero are forgetting that games like this are almost singlehandedly responsible nowadays for exposing young kids to classic rock (especially now since most parents of kids aged 10 and under likely grew up in the 80s, long after classic rock died), and while a lot of the rock in the 80s, 90s, and even '00s are inspirational, it's always that '70s rock that seems to inspire people to pick up a guitar and play. It's so great that kids nowadays are actually learning about these songs, and it might help some people get over that whole "that music is old so it automatically sucks" bias I notice in a lot of my peers...

Yes I play guitar, and I'm rather good at it, but no I can't play every Hendrix solo. Most of my friends do not play instruments but they love Rock Band, so when I play with them its cool because I get to play all these really cool songs without learning them note by note.

You need to realize that not everyone is musically inclined, and playing an instrument takes hours and hours and hours of practice everday! Most people do not have the time to learn to play Purple Haze, but if they can pick up Rock Band and play it in 5 minutes then whats the problem?!?!?

thank god harmnix picked up hendrix instead of activision/neversoft. i was afraid that activision would ruin the hendrix game like they did with Van Halen. Harmonix delivers quality games, while activion delivers half-*ssed crap.

Btw, i've been playing guitar and drums for well over 5 years now, and i still enjoy playing the drums on these games. The only thing i have against these games are the little kids that make a lifesyle out of it and the kids who call themselves "fans" of a band even though they've only heard one song from them in guitar hero/rock band.

Yes!! That would be amazing! They would have to design a new type of guitar controller to capture the notes. On the note of Jimi, I have mixed feelings about this. I don't really see the ****ing problem! It would be cool to have a game with Hendrix songs. The man was a real guitar hero, he was one of the greatest. His songs are fun to play. So why not in a game?? It would make happy people who could never play real guitar, or drums, or bass, and that always wanted to play their favorite artist songs. Besides, if you are so "offended" for Hendrix being disrespected, think about this: it will open Hendrix music to a whole lot of people who barely or never heard him. His music will be better known, and we all know we need fine music in this times, with all that crap going around. SO what's the problem?? Stop complaining about something you won't even play! And yes I've played guitar, real guitar, for almost 6 years and yes I like this kind of games. They are FUNNNY and ENTERTAINING. Who cares if it's not real guitar, I like to have some fun with my friends. No one is saying it feels the same to play guitar hero or rock band than to play real stuff. I see this as a positive thing for 2 reasons. 1, anyone that knows the history of the Hendrix family knows they have been screwed out of A LOT of money because of Michael Jefferey's dealings... 2, is it such a bad thing that kids will experience his music through this forum? I think it's a cool idea, it's introduced a generation to music they probably wouldn't have heard of otherwise, it did for me.

It doesn't matter if you like the games or no, or think it's destroying their careers or their good name. It's their name to destroy if they so please, or his estates in Jimi Hendrix case. If you become famous, or had the opportunity to have your music sold to millions through a game, and disclosing full knowledge of the name of the song, artist and having that be the only reason they're playing the game (for the music), that's the BEST advertising for your CDs and concerts as possible.

However I still believe that Guitar Hero I had it the best, when they did covers of the songs. It was way more fun then, I think they should do something like that with this game, or use live recordings.

The problem with this is how puritists are going to throw a fit when other people know about Jimi Hendrix. Music is meant to be experienced. Are people that just pop CDs into stereos any different from RB/GH players? At least if you're playing a game based on the notes, you get a closer look at what the individual notes are and where they're placed. I know it's the cool thing for guitarists to hate GH/RB because "other people should learn how to play instruments." I have mixed feelings for this, on one side, I see it better Hendrix than Green Day, because all three of the JHE were very skilled musicians, but on the other hand, I'm almost against music games now. Saying some people dont have the time, patience, ext, to learn how to play an instrument, and would rather play it in a game, without having to learn the song has one problem...
How many people played guitar hero on expert the first try? Not many. It took me a long time to be able to play expert songs. Its actually really easy to play songs on guitar once you have been playing for a long time. It takes me ten seconds to memorize the chords, get the idea of the riffs and to learn what key the song is in to improvise a solo to a song. Done. And playing it on a real instrument is much more fun than playing guitar hero metallica. When I play that, I sit there and think, why am I doing this? Its boring, Id rather play guitar. That may just be my opinion, but the time it takes, and the money,

all the haters back up, just back up for one second now stop and think, how freaking awesome would it be to have a video game made after you, millions of kids around the world would be playing YOUR songs learning about YOUR music and in the case of these games which are based on one band/artist learning YOUR history i mean come on id love to have a video game made after me. besides if its done have as well as the beatles one it should be an amazing game

Jimmy page was inspired by jimi hendrix??? Is that possible? They were both in the same time period. If Hendrix was the reason Page started playing guitar, Led Zeppelin would of formed is the early 80's....

I wouldn't say jimmy page has much more technical ability than hendrix anyway but those other guys were influenced by hendrix all those shredders hendrix is why a lot of them even started playing guitar.
