Joe Satriani: New Album Details

Over the course of his illustrious career, Joe Satriani has achieved legendary success with his 12 solo albums and 3 platinum DVD’s selling more than 10 million units worldwide. On April 1st, 2008, Satriani is set to continue his brand of electric education for the masses with the release of his 13th solo album entitled Professor Satchafunkilus And The Musterion Of Rock (Sony/BMG).

Following the albums release, Satriani will embark on a worldwide tour, kicking off April 30th in Lisbon, Portugal before hitting the European market, Australia, South America and finally returning to the U.S. in the fall of ‘08.

Professor Satchafunkilus was produced through the creative envisioning of Satriani and John Cuniberti; guiding the musical talents of longtime drummer/percussionist Jeff Campitelli and reknowned bassist Matt Bissonette. A special addition to the album’s artist list is Joe’s own son, ZZ Satriani, playing the tenor sax.

"This is definitely a rocking record," Satriani recently told Billboard.com. "We set out some parameters, and when I say 'we,' I'm working with long-time collaborator John Cuniberti, he's engineering and co-producing with me. Jeff Campitelli is playing drums, Matt Bissonette is back playing bass on eight of the 10 songs, and Eric Caudieux came back to do some digital editing and sound design."

Track Listing for Professor Satchafunkilus And The Musterion Of Rock:

01. Musterion
02. Overdriver

04. Professor Satchafunkilus
05. Revelation
06. Come On Baby

In other news, Joe Satriani will be the featured guest on the nationally syndicated radio show "Rockline", hosted by Bob Coburn, airing Wednesday, April 2 at 11:30 p.m. EST/8:30 p.m. PST. so... the fact that Vai was the pupil and not the other way around effects who's the better guitarist? I think not. If that where the case, the best guitarist would quite simply be the first one who ever tought guitar. And no not all guitarists are equal. Finally, personally I think vai is better, but thats nothing but a personal oppinion.

I love this argument. While I greatly prefer Satriani to Vai, it would completely silly to say one is better than the others. Especially when their style of guitar playing and music is actually very different.

The one moment that really defined the differences between the two was when I want to see them and I think it was Malmsteen at a G3 show many many years ago. They were all on stage playing some classic song, maybe La Grange or Smoke on the Water or something similar.

So first up is Malmsteen who pulls out his usual neoclassical arpeggio sweeping bullshit. The audience is impressed with his technical prowess but somewhat confused because it really doesn't fit the song.

Next comes Vai, who gives us his flurry of taps, sweeps, legato whammy wankery and as many strange sounds as he possibly can. The crowed again impressed by the technical prowess, but again somewhat confused.

So Joe steps up and plays something not the least big technically impressive, but instead makes every single note he does play count for something. The whole time Vai and Malmsteen are giving him a wierd look, like what the hell are you doing man? Show off, do some of your stupidly crazy legato stuff or something. Meanwhile the crowd is just thrilled by it.

Wether is be Vai, Satch, Malmsteen, Pertrucci, Gilbert, Friedman, Johnson or any other of the greats that I've not mentioned. Vai could never play the way Eric Johnson does, and he could never write a song like Satch does. That statement is true for all of them. None of them are better, they are the top of what they do, and who you like is personal preferance and nothing more.

but being that they are at the top at waht they do what when you have to doing the same thing then it does become a choice of who is the better guitarist

i got a chance to meet Joe over the summer on the 20th anniversary SWTA Tour in Chicago. What a great human being this guy is! Very nice, down to earth, great to talk to. Treats his fans like he should, doesnt act like he is better than them because he is famous or whatever.

But yeah, I have to agree, Satch over Vai anyday. His music is so much more emotionally connected and melodic than Vai's. Technically, I dont think Vai plays anything that Satch wouldnt be capable of doing, but Joe chooses to play diferently. He doesnt care about showing the world how fast he can play. Joe wants to make great music, and he does!

I will be buying this CD the SAME DAY it comes out!

I'm not sure if I understand what you're trying to say here, but I'll take a stab anyway.

They don't do the same things. It's like taking the top drivers from Nascar, the Grand Touring Cup, the Grand Prix, and asking who's the better driver?

Or comparing a Bluegrass player to a Metal player to a Blues player to a Jazz player.

You can be more specific and say who has the most technical skill, and if forced to answer I'd have to say Vai is probably the best. However that is only a small part of what encompasses being the best guitar player. For example, while Vai may be the most technically impressive, he does not Johnsons tone or touch, his legato is not as good as Satch's, nor can he use modes or melody as effectively, his sweeping isn't as clean as Malmsteens, and he cannot tremelo pick like Pertrucci.

personally im thrilled about this album and from what satch has said its gonna be really good.

Holy schnapps, we have an intelligent man in the forum !

Honestly, though, there's always going to be differences between prefered players, so calling someone stupid for arguing their favorite player being "the best" or simply calling the principle of the argument stupid, is really just stroking your own ego. If you don't have that favorite idol, the one that speaks to you the most and plays in a fashion that you find awe-inspiring, then hey, that's one less person you get to strive to be like. I LOVE John Petrucci. His picking style is amazing, his tone is absolutely gorgeous (see Hollow Years at Budokan), he can write progressive rock, progressive metal, heavy metal, hints of thrash, instrumental rock/metal (which I guess isn't too complicated, if you can write rock and metal), blues, classic right-oriented stuff -- he's just great ! Maybe not the best at all of those genres, but being able to competently play in most areas is definitely what makes me think Petrucci is one of, if not the best and most-rounded player out there.

Satch is amazing too, and definitely has something that Petrucci lacks; I can't seem to word that "Satch touch" correctly, so we'll leave it at that. As for this album ? AMAZING ! Satch's work has always left me wanting more and almost never unsatisfied -- a few claimed "Super Colossal" was a descent in his playing, while I thought it was a great album. Not as amazing as "Surfing With The Alien," but definitely a respectable album.

I'll be giving a listen to this, as well as Friedman's new album as soon as they come out. Or at least I plan on doing so...I've planned getting a lot of albums that I just...didn't end up buying. Lol.

To shorten up the whole Satriani versus Vai issue: Music is not a race. It is not to see who can go faster.

Ask a father who's artwork he appreciates more: Van Gogh or his 3-year old's drawing of him. He'll say the kid's, because it has meaning to him. It might not be more technically challenging and cool, but it bears relevance. What is relevant to one is not necessarily relevant to another.

As for the album title... that is definitely one of, if not the most, original names I've ever heard, in a time where album names just kinda suck. I wonder what the naming process is like...

I always thought the general reception of Super Colossal was kind of tragic. To be perfectly honest I think that album was one of his greatest achievements. I know not many Satriani fans would agree with me here, but let me explain why.

Simply put, it's the only album of it's nature that's able to appeal to the mainstream music population. I've tried for so many years to introduce people like Satch, Dream Theater, Paul Gilbert, Vai, Eric Johnson, Friedman and everyone else to just about everyone I know. I've never had a shred of luck. Occasionally I'd get people who liked a song or two, but never a whole CD (the most successful songs were actually Hollow Years and Solitairy Shell).

When I introduced Super Colossal to people I had completely different results. Just about everyone loved it, and not just a song or two but the entire CD. Even my girlfriend who has some of the worst possible taste in music and a complete ignorance of everything that's not pop thought it was great.

Once people started listening to that CD I was able to introduce his other CDs, and from there into other people like Andy Timmons (who kind of reminds me of Satriani with a light touch of Pertrucci) to Vai, to Dreamtheater.

I don't know about anyone else, but I think that's a pretty good accomplishment.

I loved most of Super Colossal's songs. Admittedly it had a bit of a poppy thing to it. But really, that's what probably made me enjoy it more. Now, just because of this post. I'm going to listen to Super Colossal way more (Playing Redshift Riders right now).

Satriani is a great guitar player and all that, but the way he dresses himself like a 15 year old with leather pants always makes me laugh. He can't really pull it off with those Robin Williams arms of his...

i heard that steve vai and kirk hammett from mettalica were taught personnaly by satch, so obviously they have similar skill and talent

I love Joe, he's an enormously talented guitarist and a lovely guy but I just wish he would take more risks with his music. His stuff seems stuck to a very rigid formula and it's become a bit boring.

That is by far the coolest album title I've ever seen.

Yes satch taught hammet and vai, however, a great guitarist is a great guitarist, you cant compare satch and vai, theyre both just amazing, thats what matters.

Z.Z. Satriani = Zacariah Zane Satriani

Lets start a Hammett vs Mustaine argument just to complete this
Surfing and Flying were great albums, The Extremist was....well, not as good, I lost interest after that. Hope all you Satch fans are happy with it.

who really cares who's better?
i mean, its obvious that they respect each other too much to argue over it
i mean, they bow to each other on stage (G3 live in Denver, Tokyo DVD)
i personally like vai better, but thats only because he takes more risks with his work. i mean, would Satriani have put a song like 'when i was a little boy' on one of his albums?
thats not to take anything away from Satriani and his amazing work, i just find vai to be more engaging with both his studio and his live work.
however, it is obvious that satriani has skills rooted in all aspects of music, whereas vai is more suited to his rock/metal styles
ITS TOO HARD TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THEM

im pretty sure joe satriani TAUGHT steve vai. He also taugh kirk hammett who is a badass as well. so if the student beats the teacher, the teacher was awesome.
