Linkin Park Have 'Over 100 Roughs' For New Songs

Linkin Park have over 100 rough song ideas in the works for its third full-length studio album, according to Billboard.com. Band MC Mike Shinoda said that the group continues to work on even more new material despite the wealth of songs it has now, explaining, "When songs are pouring out you don't ever want to stop that. We already have over 100 roughs for songs. We've narrowed it down since but we're not ready to commit to those yet. I can't really speak much about the style of the record but it's probably the most fun I've had recording a Linkin Park album."

Although the band initially announced that the album would be ready by the end of 2006, its release has now been pushed into 2007.

The new album will follow up 2003's multi-platinum "Meteora".

Linkin Park is working on the disc with superstar producer Rick Rubin, whom Shinoda called "a legend."

Shinoda's hip-hop side project, Fort Minor, won Ringtone of the Year for "Where'd You Go" at last week's 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, according to Blabbermouth.net.

While I do understand where you're coming from...
A number of bands do that. It provides flexibility of choice, variance in live shows, and the potential for other albums.
Metallica, for example, with Load and Reload. There was a lot more than just those 27 songs that were recorded.

Haha I hate to say it but both of those cds were garbage. Just because you write a ton of songs doesnt mean they are good. Same with use your illusion I & II. Instead of releasing one AMAZING cd they released 2 cds that both had a few really really good songs.

Everyone is freaking out about the huge number of songs that are written. What the crap? Honestly now. Seven Dust write a CRAP load of songs for a CD. Breaking Benjamin write several lyrics to the same guitar riff just to see which is best to them. Calm down. Let them do their thing. I personally enjoy them.

I honestly think its a good idea to write 100 songs. Its a lot easier to look at 100 songs and say, ok lets improve this 12 cause their the best. Rather than just saying the first 12 songs we finish are the album.

Given it might take a little longer to do it LP's way but u end up with an overall better cd because of it.

What the hell is the big deal about them writing 100 songs? If you have ideas coming to you, why would you just let them go because you "have enough songs already" If they have all these ideas coming out, then they should keep them, for all you know, they might've had most of the cd worked out already, and then come up with 10 brand new ideas that are even better than what they already had, and decide to put them onto the album as well.

I can already hear chester and mike saying "We just saw that we had so many good songs there that we had to put it out as a double album. We woulda made it a triple album if we could there was just that much good material"

Well, they said they're "rough" ideas, meaning they haven't written 100 songs, they only have some ideas. Some of these will likely get scrapped early, some of them will be put together.

i agree i think when they mean 100 songs i think they probably just mean a riff but no lyrics. Or even just ideas for a song as scourge 441 said or maybe a riff but they have a few sets of lyrics that could go with the riff.

I'm not a huge Linkin Park fan, but the practice of coming up with tons of ideas and selecting from them doesn't make your music any better or worse.

Some bands come up with an idea and like to write each song, from start to finish. These are people that will go on a creative streak and just lay out a whole album in a day. There are others who don't have that type of mind, and instead experience fragments of creativity throughout life. For these people, it makes more sense to write down everything and use your best stuff to develop.

I'm a writer and when I'm doing creative writing, anything that comes to mind gets written down right away. So even if I'm trying to put together a book, instead of having nothing, I might have 200 pages of good stuff to mix and match and build from.

Same thing as a streaky baseball player. While you've got some guys who are hitting home runs left and right, often, they end up hitting 10 home runs in 15 games, then they won't hit anything for a month. Then you've got another player who only gets one hit per game, and maybe only a single, but gets one every game. Who's going to make a greater contribution? It can be argued either way.
