Lynyrd Skynyrd Album In Early 2009

Lynyrd Skynyrd are reportedly eyeing an early-2009 release for their next studio album, says guitarist Rickey Medlocke.

The band has spent the last year recording with a surprising choice Marilyn Manson/Rob Zombie guitarist John 5 and hope to spend the latter portion of 2008 in the studio to finish recording the new album, the band’s first since 2003’s maligned Vicious Cycle. “We’ve been doing quite a bit of writing with John 5,” Medlocke said. “While everybody thought, 'My god, you are going to write with this guy? How is that ever going to work?’ But this guy came in and is really multi-talented in all genres.” Two of the songs expected to make the track list are the dark “Floyd” and the uptempo “Bang, Bang.”

Lynyrd Skynyrd is not the first classic rock artist that John 5 has worked with. He recently wrote and performed on Kiss frontman Paul Stanley's 2006 solo effort Live To Win.

The band is currently on the road sharing co-headlining duties with Rev. Run of Run DMC, and Kid Rock who appeared on the band’s last album. Rock also sampled Skynyrd's monster anthem 'Sweet Home Alabama' on his recent chart topper, 'All Summer Long'.

Well, besides the fact that all of Boston's music is done by one man(first couple of albums were made in his basement), and the singin was left to another guy.

Skynyrd lost it's lead guitarist, lead singer, plus another guitarist(Gaines) that had already cemented a very lead-y role in the band.

1st day buyer here.

I'm really looking forward to this. I actually prefer the "new" Skynyrd to the old stuff. Although I'm a bit skeptical about John 5. He's great at shredding, but when it comes to songwriting or making a classic riff, he falls short...like most shredders.

just to carify most of the members that are in Boston now have been there longer than any of the original members I consider Gary Pihl more a original member than Barry Goudroue

either way Boston has always been Tom Scholz and Brad Delp It's not the same but I'm happy they are carrying on.

but the "original" members are down to about 2 now.

I'll probably check it out when it comes out. Although it isn't the true Skynrd, it could still be good.

For Boston, it's pretty much 2 members - Tom and Brad - as far as I'm concerned. So there is about half the band in my opinion.

It's cool that John5 is producing this but I am convinced it will suck so let me know whenever a voodoo spell brings the rest of the band back from the dead to play again and then I'll think about buying an album

And yeah that's kind of true, but Gary Rossington is still alive, so they can use Lynyrd Skynyrd. If no original members of a band are left and it's all replacements then they have to change their name before they can do certain things

Actually it's just Tom, Brad committed suicide back in March.

actually medlocke is an original member. He was their first drummer before leaving to form his band. They really need Artimus Pyle back in the band along with Ed King, then they would be as close to the original skynyrd as you can get.

I saw then live last summer when they toured with 3DD and wasn't too pleased. 3DD was much better. Skynyrd was the first band I ever liked, after seeing Freebird the movie. During the concert all they did was play the songs that you hear on the radio 70 times a day in this medley style thing where they play 3 and a half minute versions. I actually want to hear the new stuff in concert but they don't play it. And I hate Sweet Home with a passion, it wasn't meant to be a party song as most rednecks use it as, it was a song in response to neil young, and was probably their worst song. they need to play tuesday's gone more, that was their best song.
