Mark Hoppus And Pete Wentz Record Song For 'Alice In Wonderland'

As reported on Spin.com, the bassists for Blink 182 and Fall Out Boy have recorded a song for the upcoming Alice In Wonderland film.

The movie which is directed by Tim Burton and set for a March release, will feature the unique collaboration by Mark Hoppus and Pete Wentz and is said it may not be their last creation. Wentz hinted that the duo may record a few more tracks for the movie's soundtrack if Hoppus isn't busy recording in the studio with the recently reunited Blink 182. As for the new track's sound, Wentz stated it's "nothing like Blink or Fall Out Boy".

"Mark understands songwriting on a completely different level," he said in an email to MTV. "It's awesome to have a chance to sit in a room with him and watch him work out a melody."

Although they have been busy with the collaboration, Wentz noted that him and Hoppus haven't formed a new project or supergroup.

"It's just for fun," he said. "It's not a band or even a project at this state. I think between me getting Starbuck's on TMZ and him gearing up for a summer of Blink, we have a lot on our hands."

A full tracklisting or release date hasn't been revealed for the Alice In Wonderland soundtrack but its said it should be anticipated for in the next few weeks.

Hoppus did some good things with +44 if any of you checked out that record. It was a more mature sound and a little darker as well. A huge leap from Blink in particular. Anyway.. I don't know what this collab will be like, but I think Hoppus puts out good music more often than not.

in fall out boys defense, their rendition of "what's this" for the nightmare before christmas soundtrack wasnt bad at all. and mark hoppus may not be considered by many as a competent musician but he knows how to make a melody.

Well, Mark is a great songwriter and singer and Wentz isn't a TERRIBLE writer, so this has a chance of sounding good.

Let's leave it to Mark and hope this is good.

Mark at least has some credibility in the emo scene because he's been a producer for a few fairly big bands

Mark is a pretty sharp dude, sure he's from Blink (and I don't care what you say, they'll always be one of my favourite bands), but I think his work with +44 was definitely a step up. He's also done a lot of producing, including Motion City Soundtrack's Commit This To Memory, which is one of the best sounding pop/punk/rock/whatever you wanna call it albums I've ever heard.

I don't like FoB or Wentz, but Mark is an excellent musician, writer and producer, who has displayed on numerous occasions that pop punk isn't the only thing he does well. So this should be good.

Does that mean double tracked bass? Or is Wentz just producing it? I really don't like Fallout Boy at all, but I really dig Blink-182. I just saw an episode of C.S.I. New York two nights ago, and Wentz and Ashlee Sipmson were in it as drug dealers. It was really bad.

shouldnt the music for this movie be a tad more psychedelic than a blink182 song? nothing against those to two, they have their place i just think it should be a little trippy.

I don't know what Wentz brings to the table here. He doesn't write or compose any of the music for FOB, just the lyrics. He can't sing either. Mark might not be the most intricate bass player in the world but he can definitely write a good song and his production work for MCS was awesome. I can't imagine Wentz would have much of an influence on the sound.

hmmm....two bassists writing a song; let me see how that's like:

Mark: alright, so here's what I've got so far...
Pete: i don't know...that sounds kind of hard man.
Mark: well just take a couple of days off and practice it.
(5 days later)
Pete: are you sure you want something this complicated?
Mark: uhhhmmm....complicated?
Pete: oh, um.....nevermind. Can I step out for a bit?

TheAdrienC wrote on 01/09/2010 - 07:46 am / quote |
So Pete, who's only real job is playing bass in Fall Out Boy, is going to record a song with a better bassist and a guy who can play just about anything else...exactly what is he going to do for this? Is he going to sit around and drool in a cup while Mark does all the work?

Don't get me wrong though. This does sound interesting.

Two pop/punk artists writing a song for a Tim Burton movie.

This can only end in tragedy.

tjdwo09 wrote on 01/09/2010 - 08:34 am / quote |
Loads of people are saying it'll be fine, but they forget it's a Tim Burton film >=[

They should just keep the songwriting to Danny Elfman.
He kicks Wentz's and Mark's ass when it comes to swongwriting.

Boomjosh wrote on 01/09/2010 - 08:38 am / quote |
Sounds like the worst collaboration i've heard in a while, clearly just a smart marketng ploy by Burton to get loads of teenage emo's to go see his films...

But dont get me wrong the movie looks ace.

SundaySt wrote on 01/09/2010 - 09:08 am / quote |
Since Mark Hoppus is part of the said collaboration, I'm going to give this issue the benefit of the doubt.

But then again, it's Pete. :|

Hope it turns out all right though. :]

Too bad that bass line was stolen from a Blink song. As long as Pete doesn't try to do too much this could be alright. +44 really showed Mark's songwriting abilities.

i'm sure that the alice in wonderland soundtrack people are going to try and please the tiny itsy bitsy minority of viewers of the film that are UG members, all of whom have opinions, on what a 'real' song writer or 'real' bassist, that are no more important or correct than those of the people that will happen to enjoy the music on the soundtrack.
