With their North American tour just underway, Massive Attack recently announced a follow-up to 2010's "Heligoland" full-length. Dubbed the "Atlas Air EP" and due Nov. 22, the four-song set will be available via digital retailers as well as a limited edition vinyl and features two new mixes of the song "Atlas Air" and a new track called "Redlight".
The band decided to donate the proceeds of the EP to
War Child, an international organization dedicated to helping children affected by war. This marks the second charitable cause they've donated to this fall, after they gave the proceeds from a Lincoln car commercial that used their song "
Paradise Circus" to help the Gulf Coast clean-up efforts. On top of that, Massive Attack's
Robert Del Naja says this new release could be the start of an EP trend from the duo.
"We got quite a bit of EPs out next year," he tells Spinner. "We're tired of the cycle of album, tour. It's more fun putting things out randomly, sort of spontaneously. We've done it quite traditionally this year, so maybe next year, a bit unorthodox."
This time around, fans can rest easy that there won't be another seven-year span between albums like there was after 2003's "100th Window." Del Naja says that the break wasn't due to a lack of motivation but too many other projects impeded a quick follow-up.
"It was a time that had to follow its own path," he says. "A big factor is not working on film scores a bit. Next year will be a different year."
