Metallica Go 'Beyond Magnetic' On CD

Metallica will release their four-track "Beyond Magnetic" EP as a physical edition at the end of January, after the album was made available via digital retailers last month.

The four songs are rough mixes of leftover songs from the "Death Magnetic" recording sessions of 2007 and 2008. Each of the songs was performed live during Metallica’s four-night 30th anniversary stint in San Francisco in December, then released to the band’s fan club members that evening.

The four songs are "Hate Train", "Just A Bullet Away", "Hell And Back" and "Rebel Of Babylon". They were the only four leftover songs from the sessions. "We kept them in the vault and decided to pull them just for this special celebration, so here are the four leftover tracks from the 'Death Magnetic' sessions," the band said. "They are ROUGH mixes, unfinished to their original degree of mixing from March ’08."

The digital release of "Beyond Magnetic" sold around 36,000 copies in its first week, reaching #32 on the Billboard charts. "Beyond Magnetic" will be released on CD on January 31 in North America and January 30 in the rest of the world.

They released 'the album that should not be named' with Lou Reed... So many people hated on 'the album' and 'the table' that they released this as a "Sorry guys"

Anyone else think that's the reason they released Beyond Magnetic... 3 years after Death Magnetic... And weeks after 'the album'

Well, one of the main reasons they released this tracks is because of their 30th anniversary concert they had back in December. They played'em live, and now it's on iTunes and CD. They are not sorry for Lulu, but however they got amazed for the media attention (like UG) that Lulu recived. It was never meant to be a big awesome album, it was just something they wanted to do. Doing something different and just having a fun time.

But I do not know the band, and your statement might be correct though. I guess we will never know...

"Hate Train" is decent, the rest sounds like it was left off the album for a reason.

I think they sre better than the worst on DM, though they all suffer from filler riffs and thet are waay too long for their own good. There are cool moments but imo the songs fall flat when viewed in their entirety, just like most songs on DM. Hell and back is probably my favourite, only part i dislike is the instrumental part in the end, rest is cool.

Is that the artwork? Given that this is somewhat of a Death Magnetic spinoff, I'm disappointed the front cover isn't a hairy dick.

I like the songs, but I'm not buying this because of the atrocious sound quality, and the inconsistent tempos of Lars kinda ruining the songs

So glad this is coming out on CD. I heard all the songs already and loved them, but I don't like buying songs digitally. I'll be the first one in my local FYE when this comes out. I still don't know why they didn't put these on DM. It's probably a "sorry for Lulu" type of thing.

DM was also a fail for me, but this EP is actually heaps better, both the music and the mixing. I'd go as far as saying that Rebel of Babylon is probably the best thing they've done since '91.

Your both wrong. Lars stated on Mission Metallica that the songs that did not make it on the album would be released EVENTUALLY as most of these "new" songs were all over Mission Metallica website and everyone wanted to know what happened to them and why they didn't make it on the album blah blah and Lars said "those songs will be released EVENTUALLY"
