Metallica Launch Mini-Site

Metallica has established a mini-site to promote the group's forthcoming studio effort. "Mission Metallica" will go live in May for the sole purpose of giving the fans a chance to "experience the new album before it's done."

The band has been hard at 'work' recording the as-yet-untitled, long-awaited new album in Los Angeles with producer Rick Rubin. Motor-mouth Napster-hater Lars Ulrich recently announced that the group's follow-up to 2003's "St Anger" will be released this September.

While speaking with Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson on Bruce's weekly BBC 6 Music radio show, Ulrich said, "We're just finishing up a record, we've got six weeks left and it should be out in September, that's the idea right now." He embellishes further, saying, "I like what I've heard so far. I'm not one of the great sellers of 'the new record's the best thing we've ever done and it shits all over the last record and it's way heavier'. I'm not a great believer in all that horseshit." To finish up, he adds a classic Lars statement that could easily have been taken from the St. Anger period; "I like it and I'm one of Metallica's harshest critics. So far it feels pretty good but there's still plenty of time to fuck it up, so let's see what happens."

Lars told Revolver magazine that the group's new material "is certainly a lot more dynamic and a lot more varied than the last couple of go-rounds," adding, "There's a lot of light and shade in these songs. There's heavy, fast, nutty stuff, and then there's some slowdowns and musical interludes." Ulrich also said that the album has more in common with some of the group's '80s releases than more recent offerings like "St. Anger" and "Load".

Ulrich wouldn't agree that the yet-to-be-titled disc is a total return to their thrashed up 'widdley-widdley leads' past, saying, "I hate to be that specific, because six months from now people are gonna go, 'What the fuck? Lars lied to us!' But it feels that way to me. It's been no secret that Rick [Rubin, producer] suggested to us that we use a couple of those records as reference points — that we spend some time kind of accessing that headspace. So when we would come to forks in the road, sometimes the exercise became, 'What would we have done at this point in 1985?"

The drummer also revealed that producer Rick Rubin, working with the band for the first time, wanted Metallica to use classics like "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" as points of reference and comparison for the album's new songs.

In other news, Evanescence singer Amy Lee has shot down rumors that she will be collaborating with Metallica on a song for the band's forthcoming album.

A couple of unsubstantiated reports involving Lee and Metallica have been making the rounds on the Internet, including that she will appear on a new version of the band's classic track "Fade to Black" and that she will be featured on a brand new Metallica song called "Last Life". However, according to Amy, neither one of them holds any water.

"I am NOT going to be collaborating with Metalica," Lee wrote in an online posting. "I have absolutely no idea where this rumor came from, but it is not true."

If they put half the effort into making music that they did into self-promotion and impossible promises to sound like a version of themselves they buried long ago, they'd probably have a new album out already, and in all likelihood, it wouldn't sound like crap. Personally, I think it's rather sad that the band has resorted to asking themselves what the "popular them of the 80's" would do... Talk about having no ambition to make new music. A lot of people don't like rush since the break from full blown prog, but at least they developed and actually try to bring something NEW to the music community. Metallica has lost their hold on their audience because they are trying to figure out what people want to listen to; no truly musical band has ever gotten away with that (I say truly musical because "pop" groups get away with it all the time because their target audience is a little less interested in music than I would say most metallica fans are). Metallica needs to go back the way they were in the 80's in the sense that they need to stop trying to please people and please themselves. This is all very evident from the fact that the band can't even work together without a therapist. If it's that hard of a job, stop trying to make money and be famous and loved: make music.

Im glad to read its coming out this year. And all this St. Anger bashing is old! Yes the production quality was shit, but most of the songs were "old" Metallica. They sold out and aren’t in it for the music anymore. They are just another spoke in the wheel of the music industry that is content with sucking the public dry. $100+ for a show and 13+ for a CD, I’m done with them. You guys act as if "selling out" is a bad thing. Bands are supposed to make music that their fans enjoy. They're expected to break out of the box but also are expected to stay true to their origins, as that's what made them huge (famous).
