Virginia Fuel, Virginia's local chapter of the Metallica Club, published an interview with Lars Ulrich's longtime assistance Steven Wiig. Here is excerpt from the chat:
Have you had a chance to listen to the new stuff that Metallica is working on?
Steve Wiig: "I hear it all of the time. I can't get away from it. I'm usually in or around the studio with them. There's some fast stuff, heavy stuff, slow stuff. There's some stuff on there that sounds a little bit closer to the "Fade to Black" / "Sanitarium" / "One"-style. the clean riff thing, a great melody. Verse stuff with the heavy chorus and the ending blows the shit out of the roof. It's cool to hear them doing that kind of thing again. That's what Rick Rubin has been saying; don't be afraid of doing more of what you do really well. Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Just make a really good Metallica album."
" So far — as far as I know — James is doing all of the lyrics, and not necessarily like what was done for "St. Anger". I’d imagine Rubin would want James to go off into his own world and tap into his own things and get lyrics that come from the heart. I think James' track record has definitely shown he is capable of coming up with some deep lyrics when he taps into it on his own. I'm anxious to hear what he digs up lyrically."
Steven Ray Wiig is an American musician and film actor. He is the drummer in the band Papa Wheelie, fronted by former Metallica bass player Jason Newsted and appears in the films Into the Wild under director Sean Penn and Some Kind of Monster. He currently resides in Sausalito, Marin County, California and works with Metallica. He is a close friend and Personal Assistant to Lars Ulrich.

: I'm gonna be honest. I got into Metallica through Load and Reload (while the Nirvana-babies spawned in bunches). They're good albums, and if it weren't for them, I'd never understand the likes of Puppetz, Justice or Lighning albums. But I wasn't fortunate enough to listen to them at their prime. And with all respect for one band that inpired me to pick up singing and guitar playing, I'd like to see them back to the Top. Long live...POSTED: 03/03/2008 - 11:56 am / quote |

: Than kgod he didn't say it was dynamic, if i hear metallica state their album is 'dynamic' i am going to shoot myself in the head. No offence but since this the word dynamic is all they've used to describe it. and the half of the album is already leeked, i've heard some of it, and i didn't really like it. Well i don't want to spoil anyting for you fans but thats my opinionPOSTED: 03/03/2008 - 12:01 pm / quote |
Lin
: Meh. Metal doesn't need metallica any more. If they go back to their old style stuff because that's what's popular now, how is that any less selling out than the nu metal on St. Anger?
Bottom line: if this is half as good as United Abominations it will probably win a grammy. Where's the justice in that?

: I don't understand why they're letting Rubin push them into doing what's popular. I'm one of the few who likes all of Metallica's albums. And I really hate to see that they're just going to rehash some of the formulas they used on older albums. St. Anger wasn't that bad at all. It had a couple really shitty songs on it, but it also had a few good ones.
I didn't like St. Anger at first. But after I watched the Some Kind Of Monster documentary, you know it kind of grew on me. I mean, at one point it looked like Metallica was finished. And then they put out St. Anger and as much hate as it still gets today, by the genre in which St. Anger is placed... it's one of the better albums that came out that year.
Anyways. If they're not going to experiment really, and they're just going to try to please all of the people that they've pissed off by musically evolving... then I hope the album is their best, and last. Go out with a bang, you know?POSTED: 03/03/2008 - 02:17 pm / quote |

Other than that bit, I'm sick of the hype for this album, and I'd rather they just leave it alone until it's about to come out.POSTED: 03/03/2008 - 03:16 pm / quote |

Megadeth are still struggling to keep any decent metal in the limelight, but I think that this next Metallica album will really make-it-or-break-it for metal in general. |
That is ridiculous! If all you have to cling to are bands from 20 years ago then i feel for you. You are missing out on the vast amount of decent music being released today. Your extreme generalisation is plain ignorance. I do agree that some of the more commercial metal bands would fit into those categories listed but there really are some amazing bands that are inventive that just aren't that popular. You just have to search around on the net and you will find it.
This album...i have lost interest really in metallica but it would be nice to see them make a good album. I feel they have a lot to prove with this album after the harsh criticism they got from St.Anger and this will provide a determination possibly for them to prove even to themselves that they still have it. Good luck to themPOSTED: 03/03/2008 - 04:09 pm / quote |

: HERE ARE SOME REASONS WHY THIS ALBUM WILL BE AMAZING AND WILL BE NOTHING LIKE ST. ANGER!!!!!
1. Tuning- In st. anger, metallica used a drop-C tuning which basically makes every note two notes lower and it ended up sounding shitty although i applaud metallica for trying something new. In the new album they have gone back to the traditional E tuning so it automatically will sound better than st. anger.
2. Lars- In st. anger, he took the snare off of his snare drum and it basicslly sounded like he was hitting trash cans. In the new album, he has put the snare back on, so it will sound like traditional metallica drums!!!
3. Rick Rubin- Metallica is once again working with the man that helped them produce amazing albums such as ride the lightning and master of puppets. Rick is working with metallica to help them use those two albums as reference points during the creation of the new album. So basically, metallica will probably sound like the good old metallica we've all grown to love of the 80's.
4. Guitar Solos- This is probably the biggest difference (and upgrade) from this album as compared to st. anger. In st. anger there were no (I repeat) no guitar solos!!! How absurd is that? what is the point of having the god of a guitarist, Kirk Hammett, in you band if you arent going to let him play solos. Metallica is lucky Kirk didnt leave the band back in 2000. But not to worry, the new album WILL HAVE GUITAR SOLOS!!!!! and since the music of today sucks so bad, these will be the best solos that anyone has heard since '91 (the black album)
Summary- So for all of you people like me that have been hoping metallica would once again make the amazing music that they used to, not to worry because they are and the new album will be amazing!!!!POSTED: 03/03/2008 - 04:44 pm / quote |

They're going to take a huge shit, and everybody's going to worship them for it. The band died when they released Load. That's when they sold out. Not at St. Anger. They made their mark and now they're history.
Why's it so hard to make something interesting or at least acceptably decent when you're an aging band? Maiden and Megadeth have proven they can pull it off. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
And your right about lots of bands copying their sound, but that's what makes Metallica revolutionary: they ****ing started that particular sound.
The scooped guitars, badass solos, speedy riffs. Every metal band today has influence from Metallica and that is why they are as big and badass as they are today. They started it all, they're the originators. So, any metal fan that doesn't get excited about a new Metallica album has something wrong with them. POSTED: 03/03/2008 - 11:07 pm / quote |

: load, reload, and St. Anger weren't bad albums they just were Metallica albums. I watched the Some Kind of Monster documentary video and their producer at the time and actually a lot of the people that were interviewed said they sounded like a whole new band. That is, in essence, what happened. they went to an almost totally different sub-genre/style for st. anger and the load/reload albums were the prelude to that. I think they got their first taste of real commercialism with the black album and they fell into they trap of making music that people would buy. wat they needed to do was make music that they wanted to make because they loved it. im hoping that thats what theyve done with their new album: made music that they can feel proud of not because it sold the most albums or won a grammy but because they have the respect of their fans for making their own decisions

So... because they take the time to write the damn music, there's something wrong?
If I were them I'd think about every step of the songwriting as much as possible... I mean, with how much their latest 3 albums suck, they had better think extremely hard about everything they do so as to not make the same mistakes again.
Either way, from what I've heard, this album should be pretty good, I'm assuming it'll be better than Load/Reload/St. Anger at least...
Oh and sammi-ellen, you realise that if it weren't for metallica so many of today's bands wouldn't even exist? They inspired bands who inspired bands and so on until the chain ends at crappy bands like MCR. So you'd better thank the classic metal bands like Megadeth, Iron Maiden, and, of course, Metallica.
Plus, one of the reasons people bash MCR so much is that it's hilarious to see all the emo fans get so worked up over such a crappy band. Whereas when you bash bands like Metallica, they don't have hilarious responses, rather logical arguments, like my whole "inspired bands who inspired bands" thing.POSTED: 03/04/2008 - 04:55 am / quote |

It's not saying that Metallica is unoriginal, it's saying that Metallica was the original and everything else copied them making them the unoriginal. You said they brought that particular style to the mainstream, and that other bands copy them. Not that they copied them from someone else. Therefore, at the time, it was original.

I was unaware that Rick Rubin worked with Metallica on Lightning and Puppets. I'd never heard that before, so I'm a bit unsure about that piece of info. I totally agree with your other 3 points, though, all the way!
And if they're working on another Fade/Sanitarium/One type song, does that mean it will start on that same open E\B chord with a little intro solo in E harmonic minor and all? After the first two (Fade/Sanitarium) I didn't think they could pull it off again, but then they did it with One, and that ruled, so hopefully there's at least another trick in that bag.
And no, I'm not 100% certain on all my chord/scale ferences, but I know that they're at least close, so don't jump me, fellas! Ya get my point.POSTED: 03/04/2008 - 10:52 am / quote |

Im sorry i forgot that everything you believe is absoltulty true, if you could please us what bands you like so that we could please go into their news stories and tear them apart, metallica does a lot more than just simple palm muting riffs (perhaps you could give a listen to any of their 8 minute plus instrumentals) you cant blame them for every shitty band out there that doesnt even make sense metallica did what they wanted, if other bands took their style and made it repetitive thats not metallicas fault thats the fault of the bands who stole the sound and just copied it, metallica was original in their style of playing you have to at least give them credit for that, when they came out (along wtih the other 4 bands of thrash metal, slayer, megadeth, anthrax, and testament) they were incredibly radical there was no one else who sounded like them.
