Metallica: New Album To Be Released In February? |
| artist: metallica |
date: 10/24/2007 |
category: upcoming releases |
|
|
Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich spoke to Tom Lanham from Examiner.com recently about a number of topics including the band's long-awaited new album, set for release next February. It's almost finished; the band will be polishing up vocal mixes until December.
Fans may be stunned by the decision to waive longtime producer Bob Rock for Rick Rubin. "But for our own sanity, our own creative survival, we needed to work with a different set of circumstances and dynamics," Ulrich says. "So we've been stripped of our defense mechanisms, and it's been very invigorating to be challenged again. Rick's taken everything we've known about making records and completely turned it upside down."
And song titles? Ulrich says, " There's one called '19,' '10,' 'German Soup', 'Glass Cow', and even 'Black Squirrel'. Just names that relate to where the idea came from, like Glasgow, Scotland became 'Glass Cow.' And when we don't have anything clever to call it, we just call it a number. They're just silly working titles."
It's been five long years since the quartet's last onslaught, St. Anger. Are the songs punchier, four or five minutes long? "Well, the most of the intros are four to five minutes," he says. "I don't know - Metallica and short songs just don't go that well together. But whereas St. Anger was an exercise in over-pummelling the listener, these new songs echo some of our stuff from the '80s - long, epic journeys through different musical landscapes, heavier, but a lot more melodic."

: I bought the limited edition CD+DVD version of St. Anger when it was released and I thought the DVD kicked ass. The sound was fantastic and it was just really cool seeing them Jam out the songs in their rehearsal space. I thought the songs were good and was digging the whole deal very much. Then I popped the CD into my car and it sounded like the equivalent of a vaseline smeared camera lens. Just muddied and drip drop on plip plop poopity doopity smearnoff spackle crapple slop. No clarity. Garbage. If I had the audio from the DVD on CD the album would have got many more spins in my players. The mix of the studio album just sounded all blurry and I couldn't even listen to it, but I like the songs. Anyone else feel this way?POSTED: 10/24/2007 - 12:48 pm / quote |

: Metallica is what set me off, so i'm dying to hear the new stuff. I've heard the song they've been doing live, which kicks ass and is as heavy as ****. I though the other one they've been doing was reminiscent of songs off Kill'Em All, which isn't a bad thing. A friend of mine said he's given up on Metallica and that he though the heavier song they've been playing live isn't that great (he thinks BLS chug better). I like BLS but i think that guy is really closed minded about what Metallica wants to do. Everyone wants another Master Of Puppets, there won't be one, this album might be just as good, but in it's own way, like St. Anger was good in it's own way. honestly, does anyone want to sit and listen to master of puppets ALLLLL Day. : Im a little aprehensive about this album. I mean St. Anger was a diamond in the rough, it just needed better production. PapaHet could have put a little more blood and tears into the lyrics and vocals but other than that it was a positive change for metallica. (Better than Load and Reload garbage) But about the new album....i strongly believe that they have gained control of their own balls instead of having bob rock doing everything. : I see four stages in which James Hetfield's voice changed: 1983 on the Kill Em All almbum...almost sounds like he hasn't completed puberty yet...watch the "No Remorse" 1983 version of their first concert - you woludn't believe it is the band that exists now.
Then, from about 1985-1992, James Hetfield's voice is still metallish but not as screechy as 1883. Then 1996-2000, his voice is so shot they have to tune down all their songs half a step (the worst sounding half step down song is Fade to Black), then from 20001 (Saint Anger) to the new stuff which can be viewed on youtube...his voice is pretty much shot. Pretty sure fade to black was on Ride the Lightning which was released in 1984 so according to you his voice was shot and he had to start tuning down in 1984. A little history lesson is in order.

His voice is definately not shot during 1996-2000. Listen to the entire s&m album and tell me his voice is shot. That is actually probably his best vocal performance, at least the best on any of the albums.

I love how so many of you pro metallica people out there go on these dumbass rants and think you're making some kind of grand statement above the anti metallica knuckle draggers. I like the first two albums by this band and then scattered songs here and there. In my opinion, they just don't have it anymore. : By the way just so anyone reading this knows, I'm not taking a crack at St.Anger with that comment. I'm just saying that Bob Rock didn't let Metallica be themselves on the album.
I say people out there need to get there head's out of their asses and realize that people are going to change. ...influences are going to change. Meaning that what's going on in there minds' is going to change, therefore making the music change.

Rob wasn't in the band when they recorded St. Anger. St. Anger sucks, face it. If you like it, then cool, put your headphones on. But the majority (or nearly all) of metalheads calls that album a piece of shit. POSTED: 10/25/2007 - 08:27 pm / quote |
