I understand St. Anger, but what was wrong with Load and Reload? Or where you refering to Garage Inc and S&M?

Anyways, so far this wounds great, I'm excited and can't wait for the new album. With St. Anger being the nearest thing in memory in regards to new Metallica, that will probablly make this sound even more awesome cause anything will be better then that album.

Wow. I think that in retrospect, as much as a disappointment that St. Anger was, it has has totally re-focused Metallica into the beast of a band that they used to be which has led up to this upcoming album. Of course, these are all opinions from a biased group, however, can it really be worse than St. Anger?

Lol. It seems like My Apocalypse is a pretty popular name for songs. I can think of two bands that have a song called that, Arch Enemy and Escape The Fate, and I know there's way more.

Anyway, I am quite excited for this album.

I don't understand why, just because they've (and along with other various 'metal' magazines) said that it's going to be really good and say that it's just like old metallica, people beleive them.
Bands can say what they like about their new album but until i hear this i won't judge.
What i WILL prejudge on is that they've completely sold out and released terrrible albums for a long time.
So they say it will change. I know everyone thinks that Metallica are gods (which they aren't) but that doesn't mean they won't lie in order to make more sales.

just my opinion.

To be honest--with the exception of MAYBE two songs from Load and Reload, I can't stand those albums. Load, Reload, and St. Anger are NOT what us elitist fans think Metallica should be. Hell, I even dislike the Black Album to an extent because that is when they moved from thrash to a more of hard rock--which is not what I want my Metallica to be

Any Album that needs to be build up this much or needs this much publicity usually sucks ass. I have a feeling this album is gonna be bad, mainly because Metallica just doesn't have in them anymore. Personally I thought St. Anger was alright and 5-6 years later their follow up will get progressively worse. Load was good , Reload Was Alright. But I could be wrong and this could be the album that makes people remember why Metallica is so great. I'm hoping it will be a great album but hope only goes so far my instincts say it's gonna suck.

However I do think they could get quite close in the riff department, but Hetfield's voice will take the music fully out of that era.

Because Metallica changed their sound so much and to the hardcore fans, it was for the worse. Take St. Anger--the fact that they wanted to remove to solos to appeal to a wider audience is what I believe to "sell out." It was a big middle finger to the old school fans who love their Metallica fast, heavy, and full of amazing solos. If you still don't comprehend--listen to ...And Justice for All, then the Black Album, then Load and you can hear how much their music changed from thrash to hard rock

Sure they might not have the solos and such which always amazed me...but theyve still got that heaviness that i love about them without being some screaming band that no one can understand. Im a bigger fan of riffs myself and i dont think its so bad that they changed things up a little. different doesnt exactly mean bad. but dont get me wrong, 80's Metallica is what i like best and it may have gone slightly downhill from there but its not as bad as everyone says and i still love Metallica

enough about kirk hammett using wah pedals, metal/hard rock guitarists have used it for at least 15 years before hammett used it on a mettalica record, and they've used it a lot better than he has. and last time i checked, all his great solo's, for "one" to "master" have no wah at all.

and next, i hope they release an album soon. they have 8 records of original material in 25 years, while megadeth has been around for 22 years, broke for 3 years, mustaine went to rehab, and they have 10 albums out, without any "st.anger/reload" disasters.

I wouldn't consider the solos on One and MOP his best by any means really, not bad but not his best.

Load and ReLoad were not great but they both had some ok / good songs on them. They just aren't the same as the earlier stuff though and people bitch about them. My fav song by them would have to be four horsemen but every live version i have ever heard of it they leave off the first solo which sux. Still best studio song imo.

It sounds to me that this is gonna be an epic album, of what I read, it's also gonna be the best album in 15 years!

When I say epic, I mean epic like Master Of Puppets and Ride The Lightning.

Now, we have to wait 3 months till it's out, but this wait is worth it, I have a feeling about it. About what's been written here on ultimate-guitar since last year (or earlier?) it has sounded very very promising.

Easy said: It's gonna kick ass!

and next, i hope they release an album soon. they have 8 records of original material in 25 years, while megadeth has been around for 22 years, broke for 3 years, mustaine went to rehab, and they have 10 albums out, without any "st.anger/reload" disasters.

still, lookin forward to this albunm if the reviews are half-way true.

Not to start a war here but most Megadeth fans feel that Risk, Cryptic Writings and The World Needs a Hero were outrageously sub par, especially risk. Now I love 'em both, but lets leave the playing field even or out of this forum completely.

Overshadow? Goddammit separate the bands for once cause they shouldn't ever be associated like that. The only people who think it's sad are the ones comparing commercial success anyway and thats no way to measure the success of a kickass band.

Being probably one of the older Metallicats here, I have to pipe in- Yeah, Load, ReLoad, and St. Anger were a definite change from the early stuff, it was just a progression in what they wanted to do musically.

I was baptized by Kill Em All, saw the light on Ride the Lightning, got my ass kicked by Master of Puppets, lived through Justice, settled down for the black, liked Load, accepted ReLoad, and was angered by St. Anger, but through it all, they made good music.

They're aren't more than a couple years older than me, and I am ready for some of that old time Metallica.... and I bet they are too. It's going to be good, really good.

You said it, those albums ROCKED!! Not my favorite but I still loved them. And what I don't get is when people say Load was OK but Reload sucked?!? They are the same album, they recorded them all at the same time and just released them a few years apart. And they never said there would be no solos so they would appeal to more people, Kirk said that the feel of the music just didn't really have room for them. I agree about that, those songs sound better without them.

I'm sure that whatever Metallica has to offer this time is going to be awesome. After all, these are the guys who I grew up listening to, and these are still the guys who I play guitar for!

Thank God they're not playing in drop-d. Dropped tunings + Metallica = Selloutica.

How is tuning down your guitar selling out? =S

Let me get this right. Metallica need to keep a majority of their fanbase by writing an album which sounds like material from over 2 decades ago? Kinda says alot about them doesnt it. If they need to do that then they've hit rock bottom. A great band forever evolves, even slightly - not by trying new stuff only to realise its shit and go back to what was big when mullets were still in... Look at Chili Peppers or etc etc. I think Metallica should call it a day.

I can't imagine jason feelings when he got in to the band in 1988 or something then the first album they released with him is with not so much bass because they dont like his bass techniques that time....lol

hmmm.... using Rage Against the Machine to describe a Metallica song.... not good. but hey it CANT be worse than St.Anger. any one can beat the shit out of a trashcan and yell shitty lyrics into a mic. this album has to be a step up from that. i am pretty excited though. if its anywhere near as good as and justice for all than i will be a happy camper lol.

you have 3 kinds of bands: bands that belong to realism, modernism or postmodernism

modernism: they make music for the music, mixing styles, very innovative (think muse and stuff like that)

postmodernism: they mix styles, but more for the fun of it, they critize (think the beastie boys)

realism: music is not a goal but a way (to communicate,...), often said to be bands that are always in it for the money; they have fewer chances to be innovative because their fanbase won't allow it (think AC/DC or Metallica)

We've all seen the reactions on St. Anger so it's more than obvious that Metallica goes back to their old days. Only a blind and deaf fool wouldn't do that.
I'm tired of people acting all surprised about a band when they make a new album and it sounds exactly like the last. As if we couldn't know what the new album would be like. I look forward to it. Love the old stuff.

parabola99 :
Here's why I'm personally nervous about this album: All the reports and press and interviews with Lars have all referenced that they're trying to be like 80s Metallica. And while that's my favorite era of the band, I think what made it work for them back then was that it's what they did naturally. They weren't trying to write riffs that sounded like Kill 'Em All when they wrote Ride. They just put their attitude in it and that's what they earnestly wrote. And I think St. Anger was a failed test in "trying too hard" to sound like old school Metallica.

Personally, I like the Black album. I like Load and Reload. I think it's really good music that expressed the band at that time. After 10 or 15 years together at that point, of course they're going to change. They're people. And I think, again, what made those albums work was that it was an honest output.

So every time I hear Lars say, "Then Rick Rubin told us to think about what we would do back in the day" I get nervous. I get nervous that this album is going to sound like someone trying to be Metallica. And that's not what Metallica was about. I've accepted that, now almost 30 years later, they're older and different people and an evolved band. It just sounds like Metallica is having some sort of mid-life crisis where they're trying to be their young selves again and may be grasping for something that isn't there any more.

So if I could give one shout out to the fellas, it'd be: just do what you do. I'm not expecting another Master of Puppets. And that's ok because I've already got that album. Impress me with what you can do now.

enough about kirk hammett using wah pedals, metal/hard rock guitarists have used it for at least 15 years before hammett used it on a mettalica record, and they've used it a lot better than he has. and last time i checked, all his great solo's, for "one" to "master" have no wah at all.

and next, i hope they release an album soon. they have 8 records of original material in 25 years, while megadeth has been around for 22 years, broke for 3 years, mustaine went to rehab, and they have 10 albums out, without any "st.anger/reload" disasters.

still, lookin forward to this albunm if the reviews are half-way true.

"chains of pain" is prolly the hardest metallica song to date!@ Ive heard 6 of their new tunes, and james' vocals go from death metal to sanitarium. These songs are pure metal and worthy of the name "metallica". Also heard an all instrumental "ecstasy of gold", "throne of ivory" rocks hard too. This is interesting, james really varies his vocals on this new stuff and stand by b/c they are back!!!

Since when are any of those metallica songs? Let me recap the track listing:

That was just your life
The End of the Line
Broken Beat and Scarred
The Day that Never Comes
All Nightmare Long
Cyanide
The Unforgiven III
The Judas Kiss
Suicide & Redemption
My Apocalypse.

You sir, are officially a liar.
Except for the fact that the album rocks really hard, I personally like Broken, Beat, and Scarred 'cause it goes in a walking-tempo time, then like 2/3 the way through, it just picks up and Kirk lets loose with a ripping solo. That Was Just Your Life is pretty awesome 'cause it opens the album up with a pounding heartbeat, then some clean eastern-style guitar, and then pounds into some Justice-style thrash metal awesomeness, with twin-guitar solo-age. Amazing album overall.
