Metallica Release 'Beyond Magnetic' EP

The metal giants will officially release the "Death Magnetic" offcuts to round off their 30th anniversary celebrations, and have hinted at a special interactive event for 2012. What could it be?

Metallica have announced a new EP to round off a stunning week of 30th anniversary celebrations.

The four songs which were released to members of the Metallica fan club over the past week will form "Beyond Magnetic", an EP which will be available exclusively available through iTunes in the US and other digital retailers worldwide.

As part of an official statement, the band described the nature of the recordings: "They are the rough mixes, unfinished to their original degree of mixing from March of 2008, and those of you with very keen senses of sound might recognize bits and pieces from the 'Mission Metallica' videos posted in the summer of 2008".

The statement adds that in January the band will announce a special interactive fan event for June 2012, which will require "a little travelling". What could it mean?

The celebrations over the past week brought more than intimate live shows and new songs. The band was reunited with some of its founding members, as well as Dave Mustaine who had been estranged from the band but appears to have mended old wounds. He embraced the current lineup when he walked on stage.

Geezer Butler and Ozzy Osbourne from the newly reformed Black Sabbath also joined Metallica on stage, in what could be the most royal of metal lineups in live music history.

Will probably be picking this up. Though I hope some of those songs are edited a bit, some bits are a bit drawn out IMO. This seems a bit of a damage control protocol to me, not that its a bad thing...

Good makeup for Lulu. Just A Bullet Away is pretty good. Rebel of Babylon is awesome and wouldn't seem out of place on Kill 'em All if they recorded it back then.

No, but it's good to see them put something else out this fast to make people forget Lulu.. Even if it is discarded tracks from their previous album. At least they're rough mixes without the distorted mastering from DM..
Blows my mind how bands can hang onto tracks like these though. Some of these are better than what was on the album. I guess there's always a case for an album to be thematically cohesive, but come on..

I would guess they were saving them for a future album, but after the fallout from lulu they realized the needed to release something immediately.

I liked St. Anger, still do, Death Magnetic is brilliant (if a little poorly mixed/mastered (I don't know who's to blame there tbh)) Lulu was in my opinion a brilliant side-step from the band's usual forte with some fascinating results & I look forward to Beyond Magnetic (what I've heard on Youtube is very good). These are general comments I do not of course love every second of everything Metallica do but I can appreciate where they're coming from in their more recent projects & they hit some of the right buttons with regard to my more general musical tastes.

So far i have enjoyed the "Beyond Magnetic" tunes. And I agree some of them should have made the cut over other tunes that did make it. And is it me, or does the mixing on these tunes sound better (to a degree) than the mixing on the album?
That aside, I'm hoping they shorten the songs by a min or so on the next album. I like DM, but not every tune needs to be over 5mins. As a guitar player/song writer I know it gets difficult to play short tunes, cause you just want to keep playing!

Love the clean part on Just A Bullet Away, that song could've definitiely fit in Death Magnetic release. I am glad that Hate Train wasn't included with Death Magnetic though, it just doesn't seem to cut it with the rest of the album and might have damaged the albums reputation, but I am so greatful they've released it because it IS a good song. How wicked would it be if they released everything they've done but discarded on one massive album.. bet there's some right gems!

These songs are all good, although Hate Train is a bit drawn out. However, they don't sound too much like Death Magnetic.

They most likely left the songs off of the album because although they are great songs, they would have disrupted the flow of the album. I would've rather had "Just a Bullet Away" over "Cyanide" though...

These songs are good, though my least favorite would be Hell and Back, and I'd just put my concentration into enjoying the guitars to drown out Ulrich's inane drumming. Also why do I have a feeling that Hetfield's got some solos here? I'm thinking of 4:20 onwards of Rebel of Babylon and 5:43 onwards of Just A Bullet Away. Or that's just me hoping for Hetfield to do more solos.

Rebel of Babylon = By far the best thing Metallica has done since their S&M show, in my opinion. There were some decent moments on St. Anger, some really good ones on Death Magnetic, But the song Rebel of Babylon is an excellent piece of work. I just don't understand why it didn't make the album. Oh well, I'm happy. Thanks Metallica.

Point taken. Though I do remember James saying when they debuted Just A Bullet Away live that he didn't feel that they were leftovers and the songs were left out since they were "too long or too something".

You could argue that the songs are in a way fresh for us since this is the first time we hear them in full. But I do concede; they are, in essence, leftovers. Awesome leftovers though.
