Metallica To Premiere New Song In 'Rock Band'

Metallica are in talks to premiere the first single from their next studio album on a new version of the Rock Band video game.

MTV senior vice president of home entertainment, Paul DeGooyer, made the announcement that Rock Band manufacturer Harmonix and MTV are planning to premier a string of new songs on updated versions of the hit computer game, the biggest draw of which is Metallica.

He told Rocky Mountain News: "There are a couple of things we've committed to, one of them with Metallica for example. They've reserved the right to give us their first single from their new album for the game."

Apart from this golden nugget of information, there’s no hint of what the track is called or when it will see the light of day. Metallica are currently holed up in the studio working on their ninth studio record.

Artists that have contributed tracks to Rock Band, which hit the shelves at the start of November, include The Who, The Rolling Stones, Fall Out Boy, Radiohead and Nirvana.

...No. Rock Band is what Guitar Hero 3 should have been. Superior song list, less retarded note structuring...
Let's put it this way. GH1 through Rock the 80s? Harmonix. GH3? Neversoft.
Rock Band? Harmonix.

GH3 is a rip off of Guitar Hero. Rock Band is evolution.

Annnnnd, now I want a PS3 more than ever. NEW Metallica? God, yes.

I loved the song list of Guitar Hero 3. Playing to Knights Of Cydonia, Before I forget, One, and Prayer Of The Refugee was a fun list. Anything with Metallica wins me over. I don't know anything about Rock Band but I am sure it will be a fun game, but probably won't hit as big as guitar hero because guitar hero was first and this is not anything too new. I can't wait to hear Metallica's new music.

Who cares if his first post is dissing Fall Out Boy, its not like any of the poster like them anyway... I had enough of seeing Pete Wentz's face all over the place, the last thing I need for him is to be a big shot in video games now.

So wat ur saying is Metallica should now make 20 more studio albums and give em out for free? Because selling them results in money, right? Heck, lets take it one step further. Let Metallica do all this, and take money from their pockets and put it in mine just for being a fan. Maybe i dont have to work anymore. Maybe all businesses should give all their products for free. Maybe colleges should be anti-tuition. Maybe gas should be for free. How bout shoe laces, i run out of them quick. How quickly we forget how many Metallica shows "popped" up out nowhere and they gave a free concert to fans. And beleive it or not, i bet Metallica appreciates us more so than any other 25+ year running band.

i want to clarify this:
after gh2 mtv and affiliates bought harmonix. so whatever company owns gh had to hire someone else to make gh3 (neversoft). harmonix made rock band for mtv which was the intention from the start. rock band was not made because
Harmonix got pissed and made Rock Band to compete with Guitar Hero.

You really have no idea what you are talking about do you. harmonix sold guitar hero 3 franchise to neversoft so they could fund Rock Band, which is the gmame and i quote, "We've always wanted to make."

long story short, harmonix has a lot of your mom jokes.

i've already played rock band for like 30 hours and i'm in no way sick of it, it's so fun and what is really cool is how if you get a little tired of one instrument you can just switch to another one for a different challenge. that's awesome that they're getting a bunch of new songs, and didn't they say they are gonna release the entire Nevermind album? or is that GH3? either way it's awesome.

Alright, Rock Band is awesome, there's nothing quite like singing and playing the guitar at the same time. It's all sorts of fun. And the solos are no harder to hit than in any other Guitar hero game, but you can fingertap now with the five "High fret" buttons. Plus, Drumming and Singing on the highest difficulties requires real skill. I'm a singer (and a bassist) and my younger bro is a drummer. We both have trouble playing above hard on those instruments.Hell, the last set for singers and Drummers Will kick you in the teeth. They've taken it far beyond just "Colored notes on a screen."

Glad to see Actual bands supporting the game, more. Now if AC/DC would let them use some songs. And where's my Queen? I wanna fail some Freddy Mercury Vocals.

Yeah, they got the note detection pretty well on the last 2 Guitar Hero's, and Rock Band's not detection is way too harsh. Plus Rock Band's guitar is the worst piece of videogame hardware ever made.
But they didn't change Rock Band's visuals...it's the first one, they can't change what wasn't there. They couldn't just copy Guitar Hero's look, because Activision owns the rights now.

it's the real guitar hero 3... since it's made by harmonix. plus rockband also has a singing feature and a drumming one. the only shitty part is that it's fender based unlike GH which is gibson :/

well it's 150 but it includes the guitar, the mic, and the drum set... so say 50 for the game and 100 for the other three, comes to 33 bucks a piece, it's not so bad.

Neversoft and Harmonix are owned by the same publisher. For retards: A publisher is a fat guy and inside of him are people called developers and they make games and the fat guy craps them out en masse and sells them.

They are not competing, the GH franchise wasn't "stolen". And it wasn't a "rip off".

Again, I repeat, owned by the same publisher.

Also, this is ****in sweet.

ZeppelinruleZ: It's worth it if you have at least one other person to play with. If you don't have any friends, just get GH3.

Uhhh dude,MTV games and EA is the publisher for Rock band...Activision is the publisher for for GH3.They ARE competition to each other.

And to the guy who said Rock band is expensive...Guy to the Red octane web site(Intrument maker for GH3) and see how much the GH multiplayer bundle is.....Same price as Rock band.

So you can have Rock band for $169 and get 3 things to play with,4 if you have another guitar or you can buy GH3 with 2 controllers....uhhh you decide...

I saw footage of it from E3, or whatever E3 was called this year and it looks amazing.
partly because it was being played by middle aged nerds. It was a bit surreal. But yeah.

Getting GH3 for christmas though.
One's on GH3, and seeing as it's better than all their other songs [and judging by St.Anger it'll be 5654738x better than the new one] this doesn't excite me too much.
Also the fact that in my opinion Metallica are one of the most overrated bands of all time

That is by far the dumbest comment on here. If your not happy with the music Metallica is making, stop listening and YOU move on . Metallica can do what ever they want. I wish people would stop thinking that ther fans command what the band must make. If they wanna make Bluegrass then let them! Are you in a band? If you are you will know how annoying it is to be dictated to about how and what you should be playing. And people think Metallica are so gready but if they really were they wouldnt have changed their formulas as they have done over the last 15 years. They would have stuck to it and sold millions upon millions of albums but would have been bored out of their skulls. Music is for enjoying and Metallica are enjoying themselves. If you want to hear music all YOUR way, then get up off your lazy butt and make it yourself. Appreciate and thank God there was and still is a band like Metallica.

Uh, how can Guitar Hero rip off of it self? Uh...anyway. IMO GH3 songlist is Much much better with songs like One, Raining Blood, Cliffs of Dover, Paint It Black, Number of the Beast, etc. Not too much goin on in Rock Band. But RB is fun none the less, but a little pricey for me (170) because Ill never sing and I have Guitar Hero for guitar stuff so really all Ill be using is the drums and thats not worth $170 as awesome and fun as it is. Ill just buy the game seperate with the drums when that comes out.

rockband is GH but its not just guitars its the whole thing. lol at people claiming sellouts. selling out is changing something to get more money. advertising is not selling out. good charlotte sold out, metallica did not. they have families to feed, its not like they just get the money because they want more cars or anything. they need money for touring, recording, equipment and various other things. and quite seriously why cant they get pissed at napster? i mean sure cds are a ripoff but the more an album sells the bigger its tour will be, therefore they did a shit tour for st anger, because nobody bought it. it was crap anyway but still. some people say they turned shit after the black album. things like S&M. maybe they just wanted to be more musically creative or to see what happens when u mix opposites. metal VS classical sounds like hella fun to me

I work at a circuit city and our store is so cool that we opened copies of both GH3 and Rock Band for the break room. I can safely say that each game has it's own retrospect: GH3 is more for crazy solos and what not, Rock Band is more about the band experience, which might i add...is really fun when you have 4 people playing. Sure it's expensive, but you're getting the guitar, a mic, the drums (with sticks) and the game all at once. When you balance that out for how much a stand-alone GH controller runs, it's actually fairly cheap. Being a drummer for 10 years I can tell you that drums on this game really do take getting used to and the song selection is pretty good with a lot of great download packs on the horizon. if you like GH, you'll love Rock Band

I was watching that some kind of monster movie and they didn't look too happy creating music. they seemed pissed and stressed. Also, Kirk was complaining that he had to do what the mainstream wanted and he didn't really have freedom to play solo's because the producers and managers wanted them to make an alternative album. they are all great musicians but you gotta wonder if they are all outta good ideas.

You really have no idea what you are talking about do you. harmonix sold guitar hero 3 franchise to neversoft so they could fund Rock Band, which is the gmame and i quote, "We've always wanted to make."

Wow, you have no idea at all, Activision bought RedOctane, the company who owned the rights of Guitar Hero, and Activision has there own developer, Neversoft to develop GHIII. GHIII was out of Harmonix's hand therefore they moved on.

wrong dude, Harmonix chose Neversoft to do Guitar Hero III, because a high exec-type guy from each company met somewhere and the Neversoft dude said he loved Guitar Hero. When harmonix moved on, they chose Neversoft because of that and they are a respected company.

And where did you hear that? Harmonix clearly had no choice, RedOctane got bought over, Activision decides who develops the game, namely, Neversoft. And Neversoft respected? All they made in the past were Tony Hawk games... They pretty much ran out ideas...other than another Tony Hawk game

I agree with you on that one. Loved the album, bought it, listened to it a few hundred times. But it's nothing one should build up upon or even do twice. Well, SOAD could (I know they don't compare, but St. Anger essentially is nothing but low, heavy riffing), but not Metallica. Might be what they want, but they can do something more interesting. If they want to do something boring, it's their right to do (they can go Nirvana if they want), but I'm expecting something powerful, something innovative.

U cant just decide not to listen to a band if their newest album isnt to your taste. Have a little faith, give it a chance, I mean, St. Anger was very very different but it wasnt a bad album.

Most people here need to stop jumping on the bandwagon, Metallica have justified their St.Anger sound many many many times, and you all just choose to ignore that cos the album doesnt sound like 'One' or 'Enter Sandman'. There are reasons for their changes in sounds between albums, thats what makes the band trully great, permeability.

Anyway, thank you. So true. The exact reason that I always shy away from using the "sellout" term, no matter how much any band or actor or famous person of any kind makes me want to. Except for Fall Out Boy. I can't stop myself from calling them sellouts. Because they really do go above and beyond in sellout-ness. You can hear it in their music, read it in interviews, see it on TV, on a commercial for Honda... or Axe... or T-Mobile... or in the soul-less eyes of the action-figures at hot topic that are mass produced in some f**king factory in some province of china, made in the likeness of those worthless, airwave poisoning sacks of shit. They just sit there in the studio and play whatever the hell their producer says will make them more money. I seriously hate those guys... I hate them so very much. Seriously you guys.

I think he was referring to the news story on this site, stating that Metallica WAS suing the makers of Guitar Hero 3, for using a song that they gave them permission to use. A story that was proven bullshit, without even a source of any kind, because someone at the Ultimate-Guitar offices didn't have anything better to do but spread downright straight-faced lies over the website, because SOMEone would be stupid enough to believe it, and hate Metallica even more for it.

Join the masses. Together, we can make it happen. Seriously, if we all get together, we could devise a plan. We murder all the members of Fall Out Boy, kill their producers, too. And then, we hunt down and destroy every single master track for all their songs. They will never be played again, and, within a generation or two, they will be completely forgotten, as if they never existed at all...

Or we can just not listen to them, and offer an opinion as something to think about whenever they're brought up in conversation. Honestly, I'm down for either.

So, you would rather hear an album made up of a frankenstein-esque beast, composed of various chunks of old albums than new music? If I were James Hetfield, I wouldn't WANT you to be my fan. I'd call you up personally, and say, "Hello, this is James Hetfield. On behalf of Metallica, I'd like to say, f**k you. I don't care if you bought all our albums from the 80s, I don't respect you.

The Eyebrow wrote:

MUHAHAHA wrote:

wrong dude, Harmonix chose Neversoft to do Guitar Hero III, because a high exec-type guy from each company met somewhere and the Neversoft dude said he loved Guitar Hero.

Holy crap. Let me put this shit right, as I actually follow this kind of stuff (mock me if you will, but my second greatest passion in life after music is video games). The last guy quoted here actually got it mostly right, minus details, for those who care (which, judging by how much discussion the topic has warranted, must be someone). RedOctane does not develop games, they publish them, and also make custom peripherals (they designed the guitars used in the Guitar Hero games). They have been partially owned, and, as of 2006, wholly owned by Activision. Harmonix was an independently-owned developer that worked with various publishers throughout the years making various games. FreQuency and Amplitude were published by Sony, then they made the Karaoke Revolution series with Konami. Then they made Guitar Hero with RedOctane and Activision.

Guitar Hero was successful, so they made a sequel with Activision. Shortly after that, they made Guitar Hero: Rocks the 80s, and, after that, they were completely bought by MTV. They are no longer an independent company, able to choose who publishes their games, as MTV owns them. Obviously, this means they couldn't make another Guitar Hero game, as Activision owns the licence. Activision still wanted to make a new game for the wildly successful franchise, but Harmonix couldn't make it for them, because they're owned by MTV now, so they stuck Neversoft on the job (a company they've owned since 1999 -just after the release of the first Tony Hawk game).

Harmonix, with the rediculous budget and music-industry ties of MTV now behind them, had the ability to make the game they wanted to make since Guitar Hero. That was Rock Band. And that was my history lesson. Goodbye.

on a lighter note, in my opinion guitar hero 3 is better (and yes i've played rock band and guitar hero) because of the controller. have any of you tried playing black hole sun or highway star on that cheap strat controller? the buttons are crap and the controller itself feels like it came out of a crackerjack box. buy rock band, trade in the guitar controller at gamestop for the gh controller, and rock your ass off on highway star.

Or is it cuz James Hetfield got lit on fire, and PF didn't!?

lol.

Am I the only one who's HIGHLY suspicious of this one? I'm not gonna say the S-O words, but it's definitely a first - 'play our song, then buy our album!'

Here's the formula for a killer Metallica album:

1. Give James a glass of whiskey and a case of beer.
2. Tell Kirk to solo all the time like we know he's capable of (get him back on the blow).
3. Get Jason back in the band and treat him like the human being and all-around nice guy that he is.
4. Tell Lars to shut the **** up and play the drums.
5. Tell James to quit 'singing' and 'crooning' and get back to his pissed off growl (see #1 for instructions).

Am I missing anything?

AGREED! I bought that tissue!! anyway, St. Anger was their worst, but that doesnt mean it was bad. metallica's quality and standard is so high that even st. anger didnt drop below the "line" and its still better than half the shit out there anyway. Metallica will always set standards for everyone to follow, whether it pertains to the musical side or business side of music.

Why does anyone care? Metallica sucks now.

Yes, they used to be metal gods, but now they're nothing but suck.

And I still don't understand why anyone on a guitar website cares about what songs are on Guitar Hero. I can play any song I want on a real guitar .

Metallica is so horrible anymore it's ridiculous. Now they're selling out and putting their music on a video game. Go to hell, Metallica, and take your horrible main stream garbage with you.

I seriously can not believe that these games have gotten so popular.... Why can't people learn to play REAL instruments anymore? It's funny when you get more props for being better at the game than the actual instrument. Eh, the world is crazy...

God, yes.

the song list in GH3 was for the most part better than GH2. I mean come on....Cliffs of Dover...Take This Life...Devil Went Down to Georgia...NUMBER OF THE BEAST!!!

Stone's got a point.
But I agree GH3 is kinda the first so rock band seems a bit more of a rip off. Who cares I am buying it anyways I get xbox360 fer xmas and i think my mom is gettin me rock band and ozzfest tickets. haha

Yea, they made a pretty solid, and different, album. So if it's solid and different than St. Anger, then everyone will be happy. Although i didn;t mind st anger.

Fall Out boy haven't sold out.. they were merely just made for mainstream audiences.. I'm no genre-hater.. Even if it sounds like Dimmu Borgir, Vader, or even Backstreet Boys.. I respect every fellow musicians and artists as well.. especially if there are fake choreographed acrobatics(Metallica's Cunning Stunts tour)

Those are the words of someone who's insecure about himself and assumes guitar playing can bolster the respect of his peers. Everybody knows the difference, instrument games are a matter of rhythm and hand-eye coordination, there's no reason to be afraid of it.

wow, this is like a 6th grade bitch fight about who has the best pokemon cards... totally pointless. if you like metallica, and are excited for the new album (and single), then please comment and discuss the article. but if all you intend on doing is bashing the most successful heavy metal band of all time, stop trying to continually convince their fans that they are complete "sell-outs", and do us a favor by shutting your damn mouth.

FYI:
metallica is constantly ridiculed for being "sell-outs", while dave mustaine is praised for staying "tr00". but if you'd take your head out of your ass and looked a little farther into things, you'd discover that davey boy is the true money loving "sell-out". lets go back to the ellefson/mustaine fall out some years back. if i re-call correctly, dave wasn't dividing the profits equally amongst the group. nowadays, you see dave signing on to roadrunner records (widely regarded as the biggest metal "sell-out" label), releasing the new Warchest: the LATEST greatest hits compilation (on top of the first greatest hits album which came out only 2 YEARS AGO, and the dozens of album re-issues... but wait, how many re-issues have metallica done?.... or how many greatest hits albums have they released?!), not to mention the brand new DAVE MUSTAINE COFFEE?! OHHH, SOOOOO METAL. SOOOOO NON MAINSTREAM. So before you bash metallica for experimenting with their musical direction, and fighting for the rights of musicians everywhere so they can atleast make SOME kind of profit on their music, PLEASE try and justify whats so non-mainstream and non-money focused about re-issuing the same songs over and over again, and starting your own coffee brand.

And where did you hear that? Harmonix clearly had no choice, RedOctane got bought over, Activision decides who develops the game, namely, Neversoft. And Neversoft respected? All they made in the past were Tony Hawk games... They pretty much ran out ideas...other than another Tony Hawk game

In an interview with the guy in charge of Harmonix, that good enough? lol

And beleive it or not, i bet Metallica appreciates us more so than any other 25+ year running band.

amen brother
metallica owns
