MxPx Plan 80s-Themed Covers Album

MxPx drummer Yuri Ruley recently spoke to ThePunkSite.com about some of the band's upcoming plans. Along with mentioning a new recording session in January, he band is planning on putting the finishing touches on a covers album. While he was unable to divulge exactly who they were covering, he did drop some hints:

"I can tell the theme. I know it sounds like a very overdone theme but it's songs that we kind of love from the 80’s. Its not necessarily chart topers from the 80’s; well some of them are but not all of them. Should be fun."

The band released "Secret Weapon" in 2007.

After reading their interview on Thepunksite.com, they state they don't think they've reached their full potential. Then why the hell don't they mix it up and do something completely different? Hell even 3 doors down (not punk I know) took a bigger risk than covering the 80's. Point being, 3dd knew they were stale and took a risk, even Metallica did the same with St. Crap, but they are bouncing back just fine.

I love punk, but one thing I never understood is why your run of the mill punk band does nothing but complain about the industry keeping them down but make no effort in finding a formula that works for them. If you want to be Phish, then don't bitch about the industry and "the man" bringing you down, shut up and go play.

MxPx should have stopped after "Life in General." Every album since then has been pretty much garbage, and this is looking to be no different.

Pop-punk was bound to happen though. As soon as Pop artists figured they could harness a little more credibility by strapping on a strat and smacking around a few power chords it was all over. On top of that, guys who really wanted to get big and rich but couldn't write their own material just had to find on of these emo, fruit, loser 'frontmen' and next thing you know we're overrun with MxPx's and Fall Out Boys.

Dude MXPX is one of my favortie bands,
they were the first show I ever saw!
(And it was awesome)

But I think they should write some new stuff,
maybe explore some new direction.
They've been around a long time, but haven't changed much at all.

NoFx Pwn MxPx, NoFx are the biggest selling independant band ever, Fat Mike set up Rock against Bush (which Billie Joe Armstrong basically hi-jacked, and as far as I know never mentioned Fat Mike, EVER! Most uncool and lsot muchos respect for the guy!)

wow. In case you all don't know, this is MxPx's SECOND cover album. The first was in the 90's which makes their 'rip off' of fearless records 'punk goes whatever' a mute point! On top of that, its a FEARLESS records cover album NOT a bunch of punk bands covering different songs. Since when was Escape the Fate punk?! MxPx has played several style's of punk but is of the ones that stayed true to the original punk/pop theme. One more thing: You can't compare them to FOB of all people. Mike's bass playing is so much better than Pete's, and Tom's guitar skills are better than whoever the hell FOB's guitarist is.

ill admit ill listen to them since i tabbed a bunch of their stuff since its so easy. but they're way too clean, jesus loving for the genre....the older stuff was fast and if u didnt listen to the lyrics ud think they were punk-ish...but its all about god and helping your mother carry groceries lol
