Pink Floyd Releasing Remastered Back Catalogue In 2011

Classic rock giants Pink Floyd are planning to release remastered versions of all the albums in their back catalogue with record label EMI some time later this year.

After resolving a legal dispute with EMI earlier this year, the band has announced that the reissue campaign, entitled "Why Pink Floyd?" will officially begin in September of 2011. On September 26th, all 14 of Pink Floyd's remastered and repackaged studio albums will be released.

The release will include both special and deluxe editions of the classic album "Dark Side of the Moon". Both a 6 disc version titled "Immersion" and a 2 disc version called "Experience" will be coming out in both digital and vinyl editions.

Pink Floyd's 1975 album "Wish You Were Here" will also receive the same 2-format treatment as "Dark Side Of The Moon", and will release on November 7th, along with an entirely new compilation entitled: "A Foot In The Door: The Best Of Pink Floyd". Their 1979 album "The Wall" will be remastered and released in both "Immersion" and "Experience" editions, as well as digital and vinyl editions on February 7th, 2012.

EMI Music Group CEO Robert Faxon had this to say of the announcement: "This is a unique collaboration between EMI and one of the most creative and influential bands in history. We have worked together for more than a year on this programme which incorporates all the elements that have made Pink Floyd one of the most inspiring forces in modern music."

How are they gonna put DSOTM on 6 discs? 1-2 songs per disc?

I was really stoked about this, but now I'm bummed out because there won't be a CD format. I mean, vinyl is cool, and obviously it makes sense, because that was their era. But CD is my era, and I really wanted to add Wish You Were Here to my CD collection, but I guess it's not to be. I'll have to find one of the old releases...

All 14 albums will be remastered and re-released as CDs on the 26th of September. The special edition formats will see a delayed release. No worries, your Wish You Were Here CD will come out in September.

whoa. Coincidence as I was listening to some Floyd a last night and thought how nice it would be if they release a box set like the Beatles have done.

I'm curious as to what these Immersion and Experience editions could contain other than a sheet of acid

Although I'm looking forward to adding this to the collection, I do wonder what's the deal with sticking dark side of the moon on 6 discs, unless they've all got extended demo versions on each discs.

I have to say that I'm a bit peeved that it's mostly just rehashed stuff that sounds a bit better or different or novel. I'd MUUUUUCH rather get new live sets from different eras, perhaps showing how DSOT, WYWH or Animals songs sounded in their performance versions, prior to recording. Live gigs from the early 70s and rarities would be good; perhaps "The Committee" as a recording. The studio songs unique to the Wall (WTGBF was on the Final Cut, but purists know it doesn't fit there in style or tone).
