Pixies Failed To Write New Album

Pixies leader Frank Black has admitted he tried and failed to write new songs for the much-mooted new Pixies album, reports NME.com.

The band reformed in 2004, but only released two new songs -- "Bam Thwok", a Kim Deal penned number that was only available through iTunes, and "Ain't That Pretty At All" for a Warren Zevon tribute album.

Black said that about six months ago he penned a number of songs for the band "in an attempt to convince one of the Pixies to make a Pixies record again. I can't say who she is," Black told Billboard in reference to bassist Kim Deal.

He said while he liked the end result of some of the songs at the same time he wasn't entirely convinced.

"I tried to find my Pixies muse and write a so-called Pixies number but they weren't any good. They sounded a little contrived or something. That's the problem with trying to repeat something you did a long time ago; if you go 'Okay, I'm gonna try to recreate something, tap into some mood I used years ago', even if it's the same songwriter, it's kind of fakey."

"What can I say? Sometimes I wish I could just spit out some Pixies-esque songs, but it doesn't really work that way. You write the songs and they come out the way they come out. They might sound like the Pixies, but these days mostly...not."

At least he's honest. It's always sad when bands deliberately release music that isn't up to par with previous efforts.

hahaha, legend. Sucks there wont be a new album but its probably better that they dont release some trashy songs as apposed to some of the old pixie style gold.

I've always respected that guy, and now respect him even more.

So many artists release such crappy comeback albums, it's horrible, they're professional musicians, they know whether they write is goood, average or bad. It's great that an artist has put up his hands and admitted he hasn't come up with anything to do justice to himself rather than releasing a mediocre album.

it's good that they reformed to tour, as they deserve to earn the money they didn't the first time round. like he says though, a new album might not be a good idea if it tarnishes their legacy.

I'd like to hear what he came up with, maybe as a solo record or something. I'm just glad he's got his head on right about not screwing with his band's legacy. Good man.

This is a sad day for me.

I was really looking forward to a new CD by them, after not truly being into music back in their recording days.

Frank Black's quote actually made me laugh a little about it though, even though you can't have The Pixies without Kim Deal, just as much as you can't have them without Joey Santiago, Black Francis, or David Lovering. I know it's not comparable to what they once were, but we still have Frank Black, and we still have The Breeders. But ugh, what I'd do to hear a new Pixies CD.

id rather he just left his back catalogue as it is; one of the best of any rock bands. we should be thankful hes not releasing stuff he thinks is crap

Come on guys, even if Frank thinks its crap, there must be some decent songs. And even if most of them are crap, i still want a new Pixies album
