Contrary to various rumours, Rancid have been working on a large amount of new material for their long-awaited seventh album -- the follow-up to 2003's "Indestructible". In his latest interview, guitarist Lars Frederiksen said the new album is currently supposed to be released sometime in 2006.
Rancid have been on hiatus since 2004, due to its members being involved in side projects. Frontman/guitarist Tim Armstrong has continued his work with The Transplants (along with Rob Aston and Aquabats/blink-182 drummer Travis Barker) and has released a new album ("Haunted Cities") this year, guitarist Lars Frederiksen has worked with his own band project Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards and has also released a new album ("The Vking") last year, bassist Matt Freeman shortly participated in Social Distortion replacing longtime bassist John Maurer before the release of their latest album ("Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll") and left early of this year and drummer Brett Reed has not started any band projects, but appeared on The Transplants' latest album as a guest appearence. However, the band has not completely broken up.
Also during the band's hiatus, Matt Freeman has been diagnosed with lung cancer in May 2005 after his departure of Social Distortion. He was dismissed as abnormal tissue growth and not terminal to his health (and no, he is not going to die).
