Ripper Owens To Replace Dio?

According to a new interview with guitarist Craig Goldy conducted by Classic Rock Revisited, Tim "Ripper" Owens will be singing in place of Ronnie James Dio on some unreleased Dio material the Dio band is going to be recording.

Says Goldy: "Wendy has given Rudy Sarzo and I permission to go through Ronnie’s computer and find music. We are going to get together with the Dio band and perform with Ripper Owens.

"I am really looking forward to that. It has been a long time since I have felt proud to be a part of something."

To those asking who he is, he's a vocalist who's probably best known for singing in Judas Priest during Rob Halford's absence.

And having him sing in place of Dio is a huge mistake.

It's not nice, but accept the fact that Ronnie is dead, the guys want to continue as a tribute to his honor and so what if the ripper is going to be singing in place of him? He ain't going back in time and replacing Dio in all of you memories of the band. I can forsee the ripper doing a very good job, it isn't going to be exactly like Dio was with Ronnie, and it never will no matter who steps in for this.

No he didn't.

First Vocalist for IE was Gene Adams in early 90's, followed by John Greely in 1991/1992. Then from 1994 to 2003 it was Matt Barlow (one of my favorite singers ever). Owens joined in 2004 and remained until late 2007 when Barlow came back.

a lot of bawwwwwing going on. I have no problem with this, he held down the fort when Halford wasn't in Priest and in my opinion there is no finer singer than Halford in metal. Sure he was on the worst Priest albums, but I'm sure it's not his fault the band wasn't making any good music.

Why not just release it, and then leave it that way without a tour or anything. A tour of a Dio album without Dio is just a money grabber anyway. Seems pointless to hire Tim to sing the stuff live when there's no reason for Dio to be playing without Dio. An album =/= need for a tour.

yes, Dio blows Ripper. But After the passing of Dio, Ripper should claim the title of best metal vocalist. Really. This guy can sing almost anything and do it right. I liked him with Judas Priest, I liked him with Iced Earth, his side projects also are very interesting. Not to mention his shows with Pain or on Roadrunner United Live. His voice totally blows away.

First of all, Dio cared about his fans more than anybody, so he would have probably wanted that fans could hear unfinished stuff from him, his legacy. Second, Ripper is a very talented vocalist, one of the best out there, and if he tried to copy Dio (which he wouldn't) would be a foolish move, 'cause no one can replace Dio. Ripper has respect for Dio and I believe that he will perform as best as he can, that's the biggest honor that you can pay to Dio. It would have been the same with any other vocalist, singing with respect to the ONE. Period.

I think Ripper is talented, but he's just that guy that can't seem to fit in in any band he joins. He has a good voice, but I don't think it really was a very good fit for Iced Earth, and it definately won't be good for Dio.

But since it's already been decided upon, I guess this really will be the new chapter in the legacy of Tim "Band Ripper" Owens.

We dont know if this is about money... Wendy knows RJD had fans that never wanted to hear the music stop... she's just trying to allow that to happen, IMO.... however, it is WAY too soon to be doing this, which then does raise suspicions which means you very well may be right.

I think I saw someone else say it, they should do what slash did and have guest singers with dio's music... M. Shadows, Owens, Ozzy, James Hetfield, etc. they could make an interestingly powerful tribute album.
