Scars On Broadway Finishing Album

System Of A Down guitarist/vocalist Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan are putting the finishing touches on the debut album from their new rock band Scars On Broadway.

The Los Angeles metal veterans are currently shopping for a record label, and hope to release the self-titled set by late summer.

"We're in the final stages," Dolmayan told Billboard.com. "There are three or four songs left."

Scars On Broadway performed last weekend at the Coachella festival in southern California. The band already received a warm welcome earlier last month during its debut performance at the Whisky A Go-Go in Los Angeles.

"It was crazy," Malakian recalled. "Nobody knew any of the songs, but the crowd was going off. The response we got gave me a lot of confidence."

The band is rounded out by a keyboardist, rhythm guitarist and a bass player, but Dolmayan declined to identify them until the lineup is completely solidified.

So far, only one Scars On Broadway song, the hard-edged "They Say," has been released online. With about 20 songs already recorded, many of which won't make the final album cut, another track could be posted online before the album comes out, according to Malakian.

As opposed to System Of A Down, which is on indefinite hiatus, Scars On Broadway is "driven more by rock than it is by metal, even though there might be some metal overtones there," said Malakian, the primary songwriter in both bands. "I see it more as a rock band."

While drawing influence from early punk bands, along with heroes like David Bowie and the Beatles, Malakian made a conscious attempt to maintain his songwriting style without delving too much into the System back catalog.

"I was trying to keep my identity but not copy past work," he said. "I'm proud of everything that I've done with System, but right now I'm focusing on moving forward with Scars."

Although System of a Down producer Rick Rubin offered a few suggestions during rehearsals, Malakian is the new album's chief producer.

On the touring front, Scars On Broadway will appear at a radio station festival in Tucson, Ariz., on May 16. Future road plans haven't yet been solidified, but "we're going to play live quite a bit," Malakian said, noting that he's not opposed to supporting a larger act.

"John and I have no ego in this situation," he explained. "It's not like we think we deserve something because of our old band. Everything we have done so far is out of our own pockets -- we've paid for the record."

The first time I heard "They Say" I wanted to cry because it sucked so much balls. I vowed never to listen to it again. After one listen, the song was stuck in my head for the next 3 days. For some bizarre reason I now love it. Damn you Malakian!

mass debator iam with 100%!!! at first it took me off guard perhaps , but i guess things need sum time to grow.. im still lookin forward to this, Elect the dead from Serj sounded like a bunch of system recordings from the hypnozie and mezmorize era that ditn make the cut for those albums.. huge disappointment for me atleast. tho i still reely reely respect serj alot!

I think System will get back together, Darron said in an interview that we should expect to see 2 Scars albums before a new System one, which to me means they are just on a break to explore new horizons etc.

Hmm. Interesting. I disagree about Serj's solo stuff. Without Daron's guitar sound and style, you cant sound like System of a Down. The songs Ive heard from Elect the Dead sound alot less heavy than any System stuff. And Kiffa, I hope thats true. Even tho it would be 2 or 3 years possibly before a second Scars on Broadway album was released, having System back together would be worth the wait.

Yes.

Scars on Broadway is going to be a lot different from SOAD from what I've heard from the live shows. Will it be completely different from SOAD? With 2 of the band members in this band, of course not. But it's a new flavor and the guitar riffs I've heard sound nice and smooth opposed to SOAD's heavy and chunky stuff.

I think it's tuned to what he was tuned to for mezmerize/hypnotize which isn't the low drop C like the first 3 cds but everything is a half step down and then the sixth string is the same as the D string which i think is C# but i don't remember

I was going to say originally that I can't understand why Tankian and Malakain keep making music that sounds exactly like System of a Down when I first listened to both of their new stuff. But after a few listens I realized it really only sounds similar because A. They sing for both. and B. It's still some form of Rock music (I've given up trying to figure out sub-genres, for fear of being killed by Metal elitists). Otherwise you can hear a pretty distinct difference.

I was a big System fan, but I honestly have to say, after listening to They Say on youtube, I was extremely unimpressed. The lyrics were uninventive, and at times, almost childish. The main chord progression sounds like it could have been written in about 30 minutes. As far as the "solo" or as I like to call it, "the same annoying repetetive note bent out of tune at least 100 ****ing times," it is just that. The solo in "Lonely Day" made me think there was a decent shredder inside of Malakian, but that killed it.

Also, the fact that there is a rhythm guitarist seems a bit redundant, and the fact that they are feusing to name their bandmates shows how much they care about them. Dolmayan is a very good drummer, and Malakian has written some very good songs, if any other songs I hear by Scars are on this same level, I will definitely be avoiding their album.

This is a dissapointment.

ok i really dont undesrtand how anyone can say that "they say" is a good creative song. agreeing with SG here. I figured out how to play it within half an hour of listening, and as a bassist i really suck at tabbing, however i am a huge SOAD and Serj fan plus the other songs ive heard from the live shows are far better. As for being called SOB its probably just a response to Serj's FCC (flying c****s of chicago) & (Sons of B*****s) note that i like both bands and that is actually what Serj's band is called.The tuning for SOB is C#,G#,C#,F#,A#,D# that is why it sounds so similar to Hypnotize, Mezmerize ans Steal this album

anyway (Sons Of Bitches) and the (Flying Cunts of Chicago) should go back to (Sucking On Aroused Dick) because they rock more. Again i love all three bands but come on they are good abbreviations. I found Serj's new stuff much more interesting, this is just plain, boring, bite-less rock (SOB)

i think "They Say" is quite a catchy simple rock song, and i love it. it's not as complex as all the other stuff I listen to or SOAD, but I still like it, and i can't wait to hear the album!

Ok, I just listened to "They Say"...I was not impressed. Lyrics were unimaginative, and the song was quite frankly boring. The music was dull, not helped by the vocals, honestly, and...I just expected more.

I loved SOAD, and I don't think either Tankian or SOB will ever escape being compared with that line-up. Because it was so damn good. Listening to "They Say" has now put me slightly off Broadway.

I'm pleading for a SOAD reunion tour/new album...Please God. Please.

(facepalm) amazing how many people don't seem to grasp the difference between originality and complexity. how many bands do you know of that are able to pull off a one note solo that's as listenable as that in "they say"? i'm not here to defend them, but if you don't recognize that everything daron puts out is distinctly unique, regardless of how simple, there's something wrong. i'll admit i was somewhat disappointed by their one song, but it was only ONE song, get a grip, people.
