Never expected such marketing from the Pumkpins. They could better have released a bonus version later with all the extra tracks. Maybe all those bonus tracks will be B-sides or something, if that's the case I don't mind that much.

Things like this piss me off, and it hits harder when it's from a respectable band like The Smashing Pumpkins. It's all a marketing scheme that many other artists do with Best Buy and occasionally with Target.

I'm going to buy the standard version because I hate supporting *******s like these companies. Then I'll with a giant smile on my face, download the other songs online knowing Best Buy nor Target got my fat ass dirty dollar. Besides, buying cds used on Amazon.com are way cheaper and are in near perfect condition, if they aren't to begin with. I've bought nearly half my cds this way (and the only way I will now) and have excellent luck.

I'm sure Billy was like...well...I'm not sure, then the Best Buy and Target CEOs whipped out their checkbooks and Billy was seeing dollar signs...

that's almost like the Mars Volta not having Frances the Mute come with the title track lol.

I'm gonna go buy the one from best buy most likely and then download the rest of the songs. which is different cause i usually just download the whole cd :P

You just need to wait till it gets seeded or is on Limewire, then compare.

Well, I really doubt that the actual band has anything to do with it, this stuff is usually decided by the label.

Still though, its lame. I wish iTunes let you buy their bonus tracks by themselves, but usually in order to get it, you have to buy the entire album. Am I going to spend 10 dollars just so I can hear one song?? No. I think its cool that alot of times CDs come with bonus DVDs and alternate versions of songs and stuff, but when they release like 4 different versions of the same thing, then I get ticked.

I heard the Peppers throwing around that idea before Stadium Arcadium was finally released, but I was relieved it never went through. Whatever, it might just be filler songs that didn't make the cut of the original track list. If we wait long enough, and the Pumpkins make a few more albums, they'll release another B-sides album anyway that will probably have them, but if you guys are really sore about it, that's what illegal downloading is for. The quickest way to a corporation's pain is through their wallets.

it is true that the corporate labels take the 'initiantive' on marketing the albums, but you'd think if they really wanted to force people to buy more than one album they would have more than one song that was different on each, that is just annoying

Stuff like this just shows how out of touch the record companies are with music fans.
A person like myself, who is just a casual Pumpkins fan, most likely would have purchased this album. Seeing that I would have to purchase the album multiple times just to get all the songs (including the TITLE TRACK!) pretty much guarantees that I will be visiting a bittorrent site to get all of the tracks.
Now, since I know in advance that I'm going to be doing some downloading just to avoid having to buy the album more than once...I might as well save myself the trouble and download the whole thing while I'm at it.
Congratulations gimmick marketing.

I agree wholeheartedly with just about every word you said. If the Smashing Pumpkins and their record label honestly think they can get anyone but the most hardcore of fans to *buy* four copies of the same album (which could send them anywhere from 40 to 80 dollars in the hole), then I really have to question their collective sanity. This is definitely going to lead the casual fans to limewire and bittorrent to get all of the songs, or just the songs they want. It's also is the biggest marketing gimmick since all of those "special edition" CD/DVD (or worse, DualDisc!) albums that started coming out a few years ago.

Although on the topic of leaving a title track off of an album...Zeppelin did that with Houses of the Holy, and it is questionable but there's no doubt that Houses is one of their best albums with or without the track.

i cant stand it when bands release multiple versions of an album exclusive to a certain retailer, partly because that means they want to milk their "true fans" into giving them as much money as possible, and secondly just because it puts that much more frustration on the consumer. i've always thought it was stupid when a band releases a best buy version with a bonus track that u cant get unless u buy it at best buy, but 4 DIFFERENT VERSIONS!?!?!? thats just crazy! thats practically $40 for the consumer, and thats if u get lucky and all the retailers sell them for $10 each. This industry has gone to shit!

Agony :
Something is wrong when everything that entertainment stands for, and I mean good entertainment, has been forgotten. Gone are the days of mass inspiration and gone are musicians who are so one-hundred-percent about the potency and relevancy of their messages that they forgot about the money. Art isn't dead. Music isn't dead, but when I see something like this, what it really is — a blatent marketing ploy — I certainly feel that we need a creative revolution. Personally I think we're on the brink.

And there are good bands even now (not necessarily the music, but the thoughts and emotions behind the music, imo just as important.)

Not the best of moves from the band. But Tarantula single is going to include one of those bonus tracks and I expect the other singles will do similar and you can usualy download just the b-sides from itnues anyway, so youve just got to buy clever to get the best deal.
And Im not too annoyed because lets be fair Billy did release an entire album (Machina II) of 25 tracks onto the internet for nothing.
Also lets not forget that Billy is also letting people record the live shows if they want to, so theres going to be quite a few live CD's making the rounds on the internet for free
