A lot of musicians like more than one genre of music. Moby (the sell out dance spaz) used to be in a thrash metal band. Countless rock muscians have a background in jazz too and have probably played in jazz bands (Jimmy Chamberlain springs to mind off the bat). It's really not uncommon.

I love Snow Patrol as they are. I got tickets for the next tour - I wasn't warned then of this. -_-

Christ I hope I love their "new direction". :/

I think he was hinting that in the grand scheme of things Slipknot aren't THAT heavy =P

Hmm, I've not been a great fan on Snow Patrol since songs for polar bears, which was a fantastic album, since then they seem to have been quite straightforward in their songs and slightly boring for me.

Early Snow Patrol is awesome. Their new stuff is kinda terrible. Though in my opinoin it's a thousand times better thatn Slpiknot.

I don't think that's what they mean, but a lot of fans are going to take it that way. It's probably their way of saying, "This new record is what we wanted to cut instead of what our studio says will sell albums, so some of of fairweather fans won't like it."

With the added implication that if the fans don't like it, then they just dislike that record - the band didn't 'get worse' or anything.

Doesn't mean the album has any more merit, but hopefully it's a clue that these guys are going to try to be less same-y. Sure they helped lead the mob, but a mob is still a mob.

What's the bet it will sound basically the same. Maybe they'll EQ the guitars differently, or turn the drums up or something. Or less/more usage of synths.

Predator 182 :
I have never liked this band... a good start for a new sound would be to get a front man who can acutally sing. The same could be said for Coldplay.
