SOAD's Daron Malakian Goes Solo

System of a Down released two chart-topping albums in 2005, and guitarist Daron Malakian has written two albums worth of songs last year (read story on UG) -- but that doesn't mean he's ready for a break.

The prolific songwriter Malakian is already planning his own side project called Scars On Broadway and will take SOAD's summer break to work on the material, according to RollingStone. "We all want to take a little bit of a break. But I don't want to sit around, so I'm going to make an album."

He said the following about the new band: "I haven't decided if I'm going to make it a revolving door of musicians or one solid band but it all revolves around my writing."

Malakian also stressed that his new project wouldn't mean the end of System Of A Down, adding: "Serj did Serart. We're always doing things outside of System that come back to System in a positive way."

He mentioned the use of electronic music in his solo material recently which athough controverial amongst the small minded of the rock fanbase could be interesting, especially if its done properly! For his solo album I dont think its too arrogant. The band members will get some credit, but he needs somebody else to play his music other than just him. I´ll be interested in hearing this, it could be great. If he can express himself through his solo albums maybe SOAD can return to their older feel with Serj being the actual lead singer and writing more of the music, because I think he is fu***** amazing.

Actually, it's quite the opposite. In most record-label bands, one or two people did all the writing. Zakk Wylde writes ALL the music for Black Label Society, Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan wrote all the music for GNR, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich wrote all the music for Metallica before St. Anger, and Daron writing all the music for SOAD is no different.

Anyway, it's gonna be weird.

SOAD are one of the most interesting, original and creative bands ever! No band has ever taken Metal as far as SOAD has, and at the same time revitalized it for whole new generation. Most of the crititism on this forum of the new albums it based around the fact that they moved on and made 2 albums that took their sound even further. I think anyone like Daron who has the balls to experiment and take risks in the self defeatist world of metal, where artistic stagnation and conformity are celebrated deserves respect. Music needs to move forward and artists need to streach themselves to get better, anyone who thinks he should have stuck to being the guitarist (not vocalist) he was in Toxicity is missing the point!

actually i thought hypnotize was only overshadowed by toxicity which will go down in history as a classic album. mezmerize wasnt all that good by soad standards but still better than steal this album. and to anybody who doesnt like them because theyre not "heavy" enough then i feel sorry for you. not everything has to be constant screaming. soad is one of the greatest bands in the world today, let alone in the metal genre.

just thought i should point out that the songs from the steal this album was all from the toxicity session. everyone keeps thinking it's a separate album that they wrote for, but it wasn't supposed to be more then b-sides that they released because they leaked. i like steal this though. i agree with you on the other issues, and i'm curious to see what daron can come up with.

I was aware of that but I consider the tracks on Steal this Album! as being...not quite in the cut; it's not grade A music in comparison to System of a down and Toxicity.

If the vocals were like "She's like hereion" and not "Lonely Day" then go for it. But if he sings like he did in lonely day it will suck. I liked when he sang on old SOAD CDs more. It would be interesting to see he sing like he did in "Prison Song" or "Chic'n Stu". That would rule.

If the vocals were like "She's like hereion" and not "Lonely Day" then go for it. But if he sings like he did in lonely day it will suck. I liked when he sang on old SOAD CDs more. It would be interesting to see he sing like he did in "Prison Song" or "Chic'n Stu". That would rule.

Okay first off Daron Malakian is one hell of a great musician and his music has deep meaning behind it all. His opinions are expressed through his unique talent and SOAD wouldnt be anywhere withough him. All the members put in their worth for the band and deserve cred. If Daron wants to do a solo album then more power to him. It gives us all 2 different ways to hear his kickass music and listen to something meaningful. If SOAD goes down because of this I will be angry. If there is one thing i hate its when a musician leaves his already amazing band to "take care of his own needs" like head did with korn. But if Daron succeeds with his solo album and SOAD then that would be awesome. Cant wait to hear his work.

Ive seen the uranium interview about 8 times.. and at first Daron looks like a jerk but when you think about the things he says it really starts making sense and he's just being honest and not into the posering stuff, which also says himself. And this is also what Daron said: I know I was a jerk to you the last, you came to me later and told I was a jerk to you and I said, Yes I was a jerk, now if I would be here sitting and denying anything, that would be a whole different situation. Im just don't like to pose and shit, (...) I could be the worlds nicest guy and you've seen that when the camaras are off!

I dont see wats so bad about darons voice, i think when serj and daron mix em right they actually sound pretty good together....


and as for ppl bashin his riffs, wats rong with them too, i hear ppl say that he sucks because he dosnt play a million notes a minute...he dosnt need too, hes good caz the guitar fits the rest of the band almost perfect.....thats just my opinion though
