Soundgarden have revealed that their first new song in 15 years, "Live To Rise", will be given away to fans for free as part of promotion for the upcoming "Avengers" movie.
"Live To Rise" is set taken from the Marvel superhero movie "Avengers Assemble", and is due to be given away as part of an iTunes promotion, which includes an exclusive clip from the blockbuster movie.
"The hard part of writing a song for a film is it has to act as a Soundgarden song, first and foremost, then obviously, it has to coexist with the film," band frontman Chris Cornell recently told Billboard magazine. Cornell has previously contributed music to soundtracks including "Mission Impossible 2", "Casino Royale" and "Machine Gun Preacher".
Soundgarden play Download Festival on June 10th as well as a headline slot at the opening night of Hard Rock Calling in London's Hyde Park on July 13th.
They seem to be keeping this track under wraps, pretty well. I've heard it, but the 'snippet' is hardly even that. It's more like a ringtone.
Youtube keeps removing any full version of the song, so I assume Soundgarden is trying their best to release it how they want it to do released...which is cool. It's a shame you can't do that stuff anymore.

It sounds like a music from a motion picture because it is, and Chris breaks down the reason why in the article.
Obviously they're not reuniting because of a sense of altruism. But it's quite clear that they didn't get back together just for the offer of money, or else we would have had a new album already in 5 different formats, and a quick summer tour to capitalize. They've always had offers to get back together, and they just haven't capitalized on this opportunity in a way that screams greed.
Whats up with that Avengers photo? It looks like a battle in the middle of the city and yet for some reasons they have all taken off their face masks.....
Is that so they can look sexy as well? The true desire of all superheros.
Not many bigger SG fans than me. As big, sure... bigger.. questionable. That said, this song is terrible. Their first truly boring song. I hope the album is different than this afterbirth garbage.
I'm sorry, but this track is not that great. It's got a good riff and a good solo by Kim but everything else sounds like Cornell's girly panties and tired voice. For the sake of this album, I hope Ben Shepherd and Thayil penned some of the tracks. Cornell's gotten repetitive.
Does doing a movie tie-in and releasing your track for free really constitute 'not doing it for the money'? Just a thought
Sure, but it's not like they milked it and created a special collector's item single package BS that would end up costing $50 for no reason. And they didn't.

Free = no payment for item.
I'd say thats the complete opposite of doing it for money :S
Free to you and me, yes. But, I'm guessing the production co for "Avengers" paid handsomely.
I feel like marvel studios are just fans of soundgarden and chris cornells work. because they used a bit of audioslave for Ironman.
they are definitely huge rock fans - just look at the iron man soundtracks, all great music put in. soundgarden probably respected this aspect of them and allowed their song to debut with their movie. AC/DC made a whole best-of soundtrack for iron man 2.
The mix sounds pretty weak but a nice throwback to the grunge era. Can't hate on a free tune from a great band.
duncang is right tho, they aren't making nothing off this...they're cashing in huge. Ideas like this will keep the music industry alive rather than depending on fans that just download it free anyways.

Not to nitpick, but I don't think there were any Audioslave songs in Iron Man. Tom Morello did some guitar work for both Iron Man movies (and was in the first movie), which may be why you thought that. There was an Audioslave song (Gasoline?) used in the trailer for Favreau's Cowboys and Aliens, but Favreau's allegiance seems to be more with Morello than Cornell. Morello played a Best Man in Made - a movie in which Favreau wrote, directed, and starred in - back in 2001.
Sounds like The White Stripes, and that's not a compliment.
Take a listen to their other stuff before making an assumption like that. And even if this riff did resemble the WHite Stripes, SOundgarden was around way before them.

I disagree...I think the riff is okay, the solo is bland, but Cornell's vocals sound pretty good, definitely better than the Audioslave days. It's a commercial song for a good movie, but it's a decent tune.
As the article says, it's to promote the movie Avangers. They get a buttload of money from the movie company. Also, promoting a stupid American garbage is not cool. So no, Soundgarden were never cool and aren't cool now either.

Just what exactly are you referring to as 'stupid American garbage' here?

I'm the only you can see pass the enthusiasm in the return of one of the greatest bands of our time, and see that they are pretty mediocre now...?
Lets wait for the entire album, to draw conclusions about that. But the new song is nothing special indeed. Cornell seems to be holding himself back on the vocals. Also, I love the intro but most of the verse and chorus are a bit bland imo. Last third of the song I quite like.

The movie they are promoting with their song.
And what is wrong with it being American? You know, like the band you're talking about right now. And what makes a movie you've never seen 'stupid garbage'?
