Steven Tyler, Wolfmother And Others Record ZZ Top Tribute Album

An all-star cast came together to record the forthcoming ZZ Top tribute album, "A Tribute From Friends". Bands and artists that covered the legendary band’s songs include Wolfmother, Nickelback, Daughtry, Wyclef Jean, Grace Potter and The Nocturnals, Duff McKagan's Loaded, Filter, Mastodon, Jamey Johnson and Coheed And Cambia, according to Blabbermouth.

Yet, one of the most interesting contributors to the album, due out October 11, is a supergroup that was put together specifically for this tribute. Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, the foundation of Fleetwood Mac, brought on guitar great Jonny Lang and superstar Steven Tyler to form The M.O.B. The band kicks off the compilation with their version of “Sharp Dressed Man”.

"We’re delighted to honor ZZ Top this way", Fleetwood said. "Their legacy, like that of the original Fleetwood Mac, is steeped in the blues we all love so much. I know that Steven and Jonny feel as strongly about their legacy as John and I do."

In related ZZ Top news, frontman Billy Gibbons recently compared his songwriting work on the band’s forthcoming album (due next year) to pornography.

Coheed's cover should be great, ZZ Top is quite similar to Davenport Cabinet's style (Travis' side project) and I reckon he'll be doing some singing

Although for Nickelback's attempt at Legs... well, I think the other article "Worst Cover Song of All Time" will need updating soon

09. Wyclef Jean - "Rough Boy"

That's definitely gonna be worse than the Nickelback one.

Not that Nickelback couldn't do a good cover of some ZZ Top song, but you know Legs isn't gonna sound good coming from them.

If you wanna hear a good cover of Rough Boy, though, check out Brooks & Dunn's version from the country ZZ Top tribute album. I'm sure it does it much more justice than Wyclef Jean is going to.

But I read in another article that all of these recordings were new. Mastodon's cover of Just Got Paid is a few years old. It came from a record label anniversary cover album -- the same one that had Avenged Sevenfold's cover of Paranoid. It's not bad, though. It's the coolest thing I've ever heard from Mastodon, anyway, but the guitar solo is kind of weak.
