The Black Keys 'Attack & Release'

artist: black keys date: 02/28/2008 category: upcoming releases
The Black Keys 'Attack & Release'

On April 1, Nonesuch Records will release The Black Keys' fifth full-length LP, Attack. The album follows their 2006 critically acclaimed Nonesuch debut Magic Potion, which the Chicago Tribune proclaimed, "a gritty, wild, minimalist masterpiece."

Produced by Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, The Gorillaz, The Grey Album), Attack was recorded at engineer Paul Hamann's illustrious Suma Studio outside Cleveland, Ohio. Initial collaboration began when Danger Mouse (a.k.a. Brian Burton) approached the band to write songs for an album he was developing with the late R.

Attack thus became The Black Keys' first collaborative effort, as it morphed into their own album with Danger Mouse as producer. By recording in an actual studio (another first), guitarist-vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney were given the opportunity to add a variety of instruments to their usual simple set-up--including organ, moog, and banjo. "After recording our previous albums in a basement, we were ready to go somewhere else," Auerbach confesses. "Danger Mouse came in as our collaborator. He has a real ear for melody and arrangement and that was a big part of this record, as was the studio...a really special place."

Carney concurs: "The place is covered with dust, it smells like a moldy cabin, and it looks like a haunted house. It was fitting for our first time going into a real studio." He continues, "I think Dan and I were intrigued to work with somebody as a producer, and with an engineer like Paul, because we both realized we couldn't teach ourselves anything more and it was best to start learning from other people."

Besides Auerbach, Carney, and Danger Mouse's work, other contributions on Attack include guitarist Marc Ribot and multi-instrumentalist Ralph Carney (Patrick's uncle)--both veterans of, among other things, Tom Waits' band. The closing track, "Things Ain't Like They Used To Be," features Auerbach singing along side eighteen-year-old bluegrass/country-singer Jessica Lea Mayfield.

The Black Keys have released four albums prior to Attack --2002's The Big Come Up, 2003's Thickfreakness, 2004's Rubber Factory, and 2006's Magic Potion.

Sweet. TBK are one of my fav bands at the moment. I just wish they would have given an official release date. I also wish all their shows weren't so far away!

As for this collaboration, I hope it doesn't make them sound bad...

WOW!!! Old school garage rock is going to come back in the best way if they're pushing it forward like this. Black Keys out of the Garage and into a full-blown studio? Dangermouse with a straight-up rock band. The possibilities are incredible. Seeing the Black Churning out tracks for the cat that mixed grey album. I love that album because it doesn't matter if you like rock n' roll or hip-hop, if you just get into it and give it a chance it has a lot of interesting ideas to offer. I can't wait to hear what the Black Keys turn out for this shit. I smell a break-through for the boys onto a much larger playing field.

now there's a band worth checking out
if you like garage rock, also check Blackbox Revelation, a Belgian band that had a national break-through but few Belgian bands make it international, just try to help them by checking them out, they're really good (and no it's not a band I'm in, though I would love that:p)

Greetz,

Yeah the black keys are one of the best rock bands out there today. They have a big sound but it is simple at the same time. I haven't seen them live yet but I seen them on tv when they played Conan Obrien and they brought so much energy to the show.

IDK, I'm still deciding on the Black Keys. I have Magic Potion. While some of the songs are really cool and full of energy, others seem really repetitive. I'd give their new album a listen though.

Or check out the Chulahoma: The Songs of Junior Kimbrough cd that they did in 2006. It is all junior covers who was an old blues musican. It's very inspiring stuff and is some of the most bluesy music I have heard in a while. You can tell that Junior was a big influence on the black keys.

I dont know what to think about TBK - has their time come and gone or was magic potion just a bit of a slump? I think they'll keep going strong; they did an incredible tribute EP maybe 2 years ago . . . it was perfect.

but with danger mouse, who knows - maybe its what the band needs, a new production angle to put some life into their music, because the blues rock has been covered pretty extensively by them.
