The Offspring Reissue Two Albums

The Offspring Reissue Two Albums

Known the world over as one of the biggest punk bands ever, the Offspring are going back to their roots by reissuing the records that started it all for them, 1992's "Ignition" and 1994's "Smash".

Aptly titled, the band's third album "Smash" became a phenomenon, driving the punk revival of the early 1990s, and to date has sold over 11 million copies worldwide. The release continues to hold the title of best-selling independently released album of all time. Mega hit songs like "Come Out and Play," "Self Esteem" and "Bad Habit" launched the Orange County CA band into superstardom, thanks in large part to Los Angeles' alternative radio station KROQ, whose embracing of the band and their sound propelled their following. Much like their contemporaries, the Offspring have hence morphed into one of the largest rock bands in the world, selling over 34 million albums in their extensive career.

The record release party for "Ignition", the band's second record and Epitaph debut, was attended by 25 diehard fans in 1992 in Fullerton, CA. The album has since sold more than 1 million copies worldwide.

The "Ignition" and "Smash" re-issues have been digitally remastered from the original tapes, and "Smash" features a new 24 page booklet. The re-issue release date of June 17th coincides with the release of The Offspring's brand new album "Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace".

Thanks for the info to Glidemagazine.com.

the whole idea and concept of rereleases are completely pointless money making scams because you can get hold of the album and buy it anyway, it's a simple excuse for them to bump up the price on there records before they return. I want to know if they are going to sell these remastered ones at the same price as what it was before. I kinda get it if the remastering makes a big differance though, if it doesn't I think Offspring well get a bit of negative press for this and to be honest rightfully!

well put it this way...if you haven't bought the original then you can now buy a nice new one with a book. Also Smash was an amazing album and I'd quite like to hear it re-mastered to see if it sounds any better. Least they're not un-necesarily re-releasing the whole offspring back catalogue.

I don't think it's their choice, Smash and Ignition are on Epitaph, their old label.

A bit like EMI selling Radiohead box sets and a 'greatest hits' to cash in on In Rainbows.

Hmm yeah thats true. But the originals were made ages ago!!!! And they are a ****in legend band.

But I think whats done is done, they should focus on moving forward.

Yeah, but Radiohead were always big, and the greatest hits was a more blatant money-making ploy since Radiohead openly said they were against it and really their albums are better as albums.

This is quite a reasonable idea, on the other hand. I might buy Smash

I might buy Ignition to hear the re-mastered version.....I like the raw energy teh original has, I wonder if the production might hinder that!

willy_99 :
urghhh this is not cool. why do they need to change it at all? ignition is good and smash is a perfect album. should just leave it how it sounds now tbh
POSTED: 05/19/2008 - 02:03 pm / quote |
its_sublime07 :
My guess is that it's going to be "too perfect." When Sublime got a bunch of their stuff remastered, it lost most of the energy that made it great in the first place. Now instead of musical pioneers with a raw and edgier touch, I'll hypothesize that it will adopt a more "radio-friendly" production quality, stripping down much of the desired sound.
POSTED: 05/19/2008 - 02:10 pm / quote |
Pikka Bird :
So this "remastering"... is it gonna be according to the church of loudness, or the school of sublimely balanced quality?

Whichever it is, I'm not sure I see the point of reissuing something that's neither out of print (I'm assuming Smash has been churned out continuously) nor particularly hard to find.

love the offspring, gonna be annoyed if the remasters are better than the originals, but i wouldn't mind buying these albums again if they are... to those saying that they're just doing it for profit, surely they have the right to make as much money as they can from their songs? that way they can continue to create good music!

It's still a money making ploy. And Epitaph have always been twats towards the Offspring, so I don't think it's cool that they're doing this on the same day it's released.

But now I think about it, it's probably good for the band, it gives their older, better material more coverage. Shows there's more to them than Pretty Fly For A White Guy, Original Prankster, Hit That, etc.

qotsa1998 :
Kinda cool. Altho reissues are really only worth the money if the albums are out of print really. But of course, record companies care more about radio singles and money than actual artists and their music sometimes. But then again, reissuing these albums might get them more fans, or show the current fans that they are much better than Hit That, Pretty Fly, and their newest stuff. If they had thrown in some old demos, some B-sides, or some live stuff even, i think it would be more worth it to me.

Money making ploy? Graduate high school yet?

If you don't like what they are re-releasing, then don't buy it. It's not like they are editing their old songs via pro tools, remastering their entire back catalouge, then thanking George Lucas for helping them go back & "finish" their artistic vision with newer technology today, in the process making their old stuff "not canon" or "incomplete" or "inferior".

Grow up.

POSTED: 05/19/2008 - 04:31 pm / quote |
Jau_Peacecraft :
Also, cd's get old, and not everyone likes to download FLAC's and/or mp3's since Comcast & Verizon are increasingly limiting access to bit torrent speeds. So if your old cd's are cracked & don't work, and you still like to listen to cd's (my copy of Smash got wrecked in the past decade), this might be worthwhile

whoa whoa, for money? The last thing The Offspring are about is money. Has everyone forgot when they release Conspiracy of One? They were going to offer it free for downloads, but Columbia records got their panties in a bunch and said NO.

So The Offspring arent about money thank you very much, and ive even heard a rumor about their new album for free....

first of all, don't call offspring shit. they were way more successful than the dead keneddys ever were. And second, Offspring are wayyy more punk than any "punk" band out there still making records. and NOFX.

It's hard to compare bands like the Offspring to bands like the Ramones. The Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Clash and bands like that invented punk rock. Bands like the Offspring, NOFX, Rancid, and Bad Religion sound different than the true punk pioneers, but their music is still punk and still great.

uh, sex pistols didnt invent punk, they exploited it. they didnt start any fads, any styles, or use original themes in there lyrics. the ramones invented it, with influence from alice cooper and the who, and the clash enhanced it.

credit where credit is due.

God, so bitchy.

Blink + Offspring = not "punk" but still awesome.

Success doesn't = quality.

And I don't think the band had the last say on this, they left Epitaph because they were getting ****ed over so it wouldn't surprise me now. I'll probably download them as I already have the CDs.

I'm totally stoked about "Rise and Fall..." despite the name.
