As promised, They Might Be Giants have expanded their marathon tour behind their new album, "The Else."
The quirky alt-rockers will continue the outing Sept. 12 in Baltimore, MD, and play all over the US through next year, including a free show Sept. 21 in Salt Lake City, UT. Their current itinerary takes them through late November; details are listed below. Irish indie-pop band Oppenheimer will open a good chunk of the shows.
"
The Else," released in July, is They Might Be Giants' 12th album. The set, which took a year and half to make, was created in collaboration with LA producers the Dust Brothers (Beck, Beastie Boys) and New York City producer/engineer Patrick Dillett (Mary J. Blige, David Byrne). It was released on the band's own Idlewind imprint through Zoe/Universal.
"Perhaps it's old fashioned to worry about making a full album really hold together as a musical experience, but that was our goal," TMBG co-founder John Flansburgh said in a statement. "We were very lucky that we could approach this project without deadlines or release schedules hanging over our heads. We wanted to be sure this was an album that was our best effort from beginning to end and I am very excited to report I believe we've actually done it!"
A couple of songs from the record are streaming TMBG's MySpace page.
Singer/guitarist Flansburgh and singer/keyboardist John Linell formed They Might Be Giants as a duo in 1982. In the '90s, they expanded their horizons into television, movies and the Internet, notably contributing to the film "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and FOX-TV's "Malcolm in the Middle," the theme for which earned TMBG a Grammy award.
The group, also critically acclaimed amongst the kiddie set, put out its second album of children's music, "Here Come the ABCs," in 2005. On Oct. 14, TMBG will appear at the Target Children's Book Festival in New York City.
