Brad Angle of Guitar World magazine recently conducted an interview with Tool guitarist Adam Jones.
When asked how the new album was coming along, Jones replied:
"It's been coming along...great! [laughs] No, we've been on hiatus. I'm writing and [bassist] Justin [Canchellor]'s been writing, but [frontman] Maynard [James Keenan] has been working on his wine.
" We've all just been taking some time away from each other, which has been nice. I've also been working on producing some comics."
The entire interview can be found in the latest issue of Guitar World, out on newsstands now.
Tool have been on break from touring and writing since early 2008, following nearly two years of supporting their most recent studio album, 2006's "10,000 Days", which marked its first set of new material since 2001's "Lateralus."
Thanks for the info to Killyourstereo.com.

To Bartlett - The song lateralus is an epic must, but as most of their songs it really shines after you have listenend to it multiple times and can digest everything that is going on. If the songs you have heard are too progressive for you, try stinkfist and 46 & 2 off of the aenema cd.POSTED: 02/09/2009 - 02:18 pm / quote |

Wtf are the points of any band's songs? That's one of the most idiotic questions I've ever heard.
I love this band, and I can't wait for new material, although Adam Jones' comment doesn't indicate much of anything, other than that he's being a musician in his free time. Isn't Tool one of those bands that writes their music together? The complexity of it seems to indicate that, no?POSTED: 02/09/2009 - 03:22 pm / quote |

Am I the only one that likes tool but finds some of the die hard fans annoying. They're a great band, don't get me wrong but c'mon, just because somone doesn't like an album from tool doesn't make them an "Ignorant fool". Call me somone who "Isn't a true tool fan" but I really couldn't care less if somone didn't like them. They're a BAND not a RELIGION. For the love of God...or for the love or Maynard as some of you would say.
With that out of the way I am pretty stoked for the new album IF THEY COME OUT WITH ONE. but people are right, the article only talks about Adam playing guitar and I think they mentioned something about Justin playing bass...but it was mostly Adam and his guitarPOSTED: 02/09/2009 - 06:12 pm / quote |

: yeah, i really don't get stoked on music that has interesting time signatures but lacks any passion or humanity. something about tool always felt very inorganic to me. hmpf.
i don't mean to offend. every once in a while someone will recommend some tool record to me based on some really unrelated interest ("mexicola" by queens of the stone age?)(oh you like metal? do you listen to tool?).
whatever. i love you guys.POSTED: 02/10/2009 - 05:14 am / quote |

btw if you dont like the band then stop commenting, because i eat cereal out of maynerds ass. thats why i keep sugar in my pocket. period.
Frankly, I got tired of tool in highschool and 10,000 days was unamusing to me. It was a cool cd case tho.
oh wow you're so mature....actually no....you're not...however I love tool but I just hate when people put bands on pedestals they're just regular guys I love music and all but Im not one of those fanboy followers that if a band were to say "I'm voting for Obama" I wouldnt say "wow, if one of my favorite bands is voting for Obama then I guess Obama's the cool one to vote for" Which the majority of people did, have a mind of your own/quote]
and im nothing but a follower because i think they're great musicians? wow how dare i like a band. i think theyre a great band for the same reasons everyone else would say they like metallica or greenday or whatever. seriously stop making yourself look better by being a follower yourself and saying that garbage.

I agreed with that for the longest time. Vicarious would come on and I'd think, "Ugh, Tool... creative, but boring." But I decided I'd give them a chance--I went out on a limb and bought Lateralus. Absolutely love that album front to back. Very little of that album is empty ambience (lot of that on 10k days...), 5 minutes tops, and its 78 total. The songs take a while to get going, which makes their payoffs excellent. Once I knew the lyrics I could listen to the song as a whole and get more out of it, their songs are very carefully created.
I'm fine with waiting 5 years between albums. Many bands who pump out studio albums every other year have only 4 great albums or so anyway... Tool is just cutting the crap. I can definitely see why people don't like them, so don't get pushy towards those people, that'll just make them hate.
Lateralus is still my favorite Tool output, probably one of my top 10 CDs ever.POSTED: 02/10/2009 - 09:50 am / quote |

: All of their albums have been amazing. 10,000 was a sick album and I really don't understand how any Tool fan could hate it. I wish it was a little longer, but I loved it. I actually listened to the whole album the other day and forgot how good it was. Can't wait for the new album. Maybe they'll release it in December 2012 and it will be the apacolypse POSTED: 02/10/2009 - 11:47 am / quote |

: Good on tool for taking a break lately, its hard as **** to write music, especially as complex and deep as tools
all the ****in jackals that beg for music dont realize how typically(note i said typically) if an album takes a while its good, but if its quick, the music isnt as good
tool makes the best music i've ever heard, and its because they have a very good approach to writing, they do their own things, they work with other artists and then they come together and build and amazing album
so wether i have to wait a few years or not, i just want at some point to hear a great new tool albumPOSTED: 02/10/2009 - 12:04 pm / quote |

and here comes another comment which is nothing but sad if it comes from a tool fan...
Wow. You must be one of those "real" tool fans. |
no, im not.
it's just not very amusing to see people who have absolutely no clue how hard it is to write and produce an album like tool and many other great bands do saying something like that.
look, im not hailing tool to be the best band in the world or shit like that...i just think a person who says something like that does not get what the band is all about. nothing more.POSTED: 02/10/2009 - 12:15 pm / quote |

: Tool should go back to the original sound they had. Also....whats this shit I always read that you can't be a new fan of them. People act like they discovered them first and if you like them somehow you are a poser or some shit. Is it just me or has anyone else witnessed this? Unfukinreal. Damn that pisses me off. : Unfukinreal....here we go again. The "you don't understand the band so you can't listen to them" douche bag philosophy. I have ALL of tool's albums. ON Vinyl mind you. But I am a poser because I do not really know what they are all about. Should I ask permission to spin these records from a true tool aficionado so that I am not posing.POSTED: 02/14/2009 - 02:35 pm / quote |

: Tool will never go back to writing material that's "like their old stuff." As a human you should understand that you are nothing like you were 15 years ago, and neither are the events taking place in your life, so to expect anyone to regress that far musically is well, for lack of a better word, ignorant. Music is inspired by life and you can bet that none of them are in the same place they were before. I look forward to the new album, but don't expect to see anything in this decade. And opinions are like a$$h0les, everybody's got one. Just because it doesn't reflect your own doesn't make it any less important.POSTED: 02/23/2009 - 07:34 pm / quote |

: Personally I think the album wont be out until 2011, even though i wish it was out now.
See my theory is this. Every other year is good for music, 2009 is setting up to be great, while 2008... let's just say we probably dont need to remember any of it.
Same for movies. But i haven't figured out that trend yet...POSTED: 03/04/2009 - 03:49 pm / quote |
