Cannibal Corpse Smile At Idea Of 'Big Four' Death Metal Tour
After a successful run with this year's Summer Slaughter Tour, Cannibal Corpse will hit the road again in November on its own headlining tour, kicking off Nov. 16 in Huntsville, Ala. But the Florida death metal group is also looking ahead to 2013, when it will celebrate its 25th anniversary. Drummer and co-founder Paul Mazurkiewicz tells Billboard that the group has "a couple of things that are in the works, but I'm probably not a liberty to say anything at this point. We've got a few things planned. Hopefully fans will enjoy what we've got lined up. We've definitely got to have something going; 25 years is a huge milestone for the band, so something will happen". Meanwhile, Mazurkiewicz says he and the rest of Cannibal Corpse are still trying to wrap their heads around the prospect of hitting the quarter century mark. "Every day we look back and go, like, 'What's going on here? How'd this happen?'" Mazurkiewicz acknowledges. "We're just kids from Buffalo (originally) that started playing some crazy music, and here we are touring the world, selling records. It's really crazy to fully comprehend and grasp that this has been happening at all, let along for almost 25 years. We never thought this far into the future, you know? And now we look back and there's a lot to look back on. We're a household name, in a way. That's crazy to me". And while the anniversary plans are still in formation, Mazurkiewicz does like the suggestion of a death metal equivalent of the Big Four thrash shows that featured Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. "I think that would be pretty cool", he says. "I don't know if it would every happen. On paper, of course, it would be great for us, Morbid Angel, Deicide and Suffocation, something like that. That would be a brutal, brutal tour, a big celebration of bands that have been there since kind of the beginning - and are still going. It would be cool to do something like that". Meanwhile, Cannibal Corpse continues to promote "Torture", the group's 12th studio album, which came out in March and debuted at a career-high No. 38 on the Billboard 200 and No. 7 on the Independent Albums chart. For Mazurkiewicz that's a sign that the group's genre has grown beyond its fringe appeal. "It's not new anymore. It's been around for generations", he notes. "Kids are coming to see us now with their fathers - and grandfathers, sometimes. Back in the mid-80s when thrash was new and this crazy death metal was coming out, people were freaking out, like, 'What is this?!' Twenty-five, 30 years later, it's weird to think that death metal is doing as great as it is, and heavy metal in general. It's just getting bigger and better and more popular, which is great".
