Download Festival Rules Out Hologram Technology

Download Festival will never see an appearance from a deceased legend in the form of a hologram, at least according to the man in charge of the festival.

Despite seeing the huge success of Tupac's return to Coachella earlier this year, Download organiser Andy Copping has ruled out the possibility of reviving a metal legend through similar technology at his event.

Speaking to Metal Hammer about the chances of doing something similar at the annual metal festival, Copping said: "Absolutely not. If you're going to a live show, you want to see live bands with proper interaction. You're not going to see cartoons. I think the whole thing with Tupac and Dre and Snoop at Coachella was great, but it was a moment in time."

Adding: "Why would you want to go and see a f--king hologram? It doesn't sit comfortably with me at all. I don't get it."

This year's Download line-up includes Biffy Clyro, Soundgarden, You Me At Six, Tenacious D, Slash, Steel Panther and Chase & Status - the booking of the latter causing controversy among fans of the festival who are uncertain whether the dance band should be on the rock festival line-up.

I gain great enjoyment seeing the statements on here opposing holograms for my major heroes, but perhaps someone could answer me how the hip-hop and pop culture community feels about holograms? It is obvious rock 'n roll fans are not pro-hologram.

It makes sense maybe for a non-singer...I would love to see Cozy Powell or randy Rhoads on stage again...but going to a "live" show to see a hologram pantomine prerecorded singing is retarded.

I think the whole hologram thing is cool when used to enhance an existing performer's show. Surprisingly,I thought Snoop Dogg used it pretty effectively. Only used for one song, and he was still performing. I would never pay to just see a hologram, but it's cool when used as a special effect like pyrotechnics or lighting.

Tupac was really cool at Coachella. I saw it live. But that should've been a 1 time (2 weekend) deal. If everyone started using holograms, it would make what I saw less special...

Sort of irrelevant, but why do they keep referring to these things as holograms, as if they're some sort of new and impressive technology? As far as I know, the whole Tupac thing was just a clever use of Pepper's Ghost, a lighting trick/illusion that's been used in theater for ages. I just don't see what the fuss is all about when the "hologram" is a) nothing new and b) not even an actual hologram.

Well seeing as how this whole bring back a dead star with a hologram thing had been done by X Japan back in 2008 I would say the Tupac thing was kinda Cheesy.

the worst thing about the holograms is that your not even really seeing your hero or favourite music idol. i mean sure, they are there and you can see them, but the things that made them them were how they performed on stage, and how they reacted to different things, *correct me if im wrong* but all of the holograms have to be pre-programmed right? so really you may as well watch a dvd but at double the volume you usually would
