Ex-Jane's Addiction Bassist To Join Reunited Smashing Pumpkins

Former Jane's Addiction bassist Eric Avery has been tapped to join the reunited Smashing Pumpkins, according to a posting on a fan site dedicated to Avery's long-defunct Polarbear project.

Smashing Pumpkins recently announced via their official web site that they have officially reformed and are currently writing songs for their upcoming album, their first since 2000. No release date has yet been set, but the group plans to begin recording this summer.

In early February, onetime Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur as well as an undisclosed source "close to the situation" confirmed to MTV News that Pumpkins bandleader Billy Corgan has been working on material that will, at some point, surface in the form of a new Smashing Pumpkins album. "Everyone knows Billy doesn't need too many people to make a Pumpkins record, other than Jimmy [Chamberlin, longtime Pumpkins drummer] ? who he has [on board]," Auf Der Maur said at the time. A spokesperson for Azoff Management also confirmed that Corgan and Chamberlin had signed on with the firm as Smashing Pumpkins, and that the two have been writing new music.

I think that Eric is a good choice, his style of bass is very similar to D'arcy's on Gish, so with that in mind they could be shooting for an older style sound. Still they need James to make me really care.

well aparntly D'Arcy and James dont get on at all anymore. So there'd be no chance of both of them re-joining the band.

so the same 2/4ths of the band that never parted company in the first place are writing new material with a new bassist (and potentially a new guitarist, if James doesn't come back)...how exactly is this a "reunion"??? Because they're playing under their old band's name? I think they're doing this because no one likes anything Billy's done since SP broke up.

Billy pretty much was the Pumpkins, all he needs is Jimmy and they'll be ok. But James was a big part of the Pumpkins and it would be good to get him back. This new guy seems allright though, if you're going to replace Darc you might as well do it with someone who's got a good rep

Lol, I can't believe the lack of recognition for this guy on here. He's one of the best bassists of the late 80's and early 90's. He's far better than D'arcy and will improve the band significantly if he joins.
