Metallica To Play New Songs On Upcoming Tour

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has commented on the band's headlining appearance at this year's Reading and Leeds Festivals, which will happen, as usual, in England over the August Bank holiday weekend — from Friday, August 22 to Sunday, August 24.

"Alongside the hallowed turf of Castle Donington there is no place in the UK that is more historic or more of an honor for Metallica to play than at Reading," Ulrich told Kerrang! magazine. "Back in the day when I was first tripping on music, I'd look at the line-up and see bands like Iron Maiden, UFO and Whitesnake headlining, so for us to be asked to come back yet again and stand at the top of the pile so to speak is an absolutely tremendous gift from the organisers. It's just such an absolutely incredible thing to be a part of.

"I remember playing the festival back in '03 and getting the chance to close down Reading, and that was such a massive feeling to carry around," he added. "The fact that they've asked us to come back and do the same thing again is absolutely huge in my eyes. We headlined Wembley last year, did Download the year before, and so playing Reading and Leeds just seemed like the obvious thing to do. In my eyes it's still one of the biggest and most monumental music festivals in the world, and with bands like Slipknot and Rage Against The Machine playing I'm sure it's going to be one of the best line-ups that people have seen in quite a while."

Ulrich said fans can expect to hear some new material from their forthcoming ninth studio album.

"We're psyched to play some new songs," he laughed. "In fact, if we don't, then I give people permission to come and find me and slap me across the face! We're certainly planning on rolling out some of the new songs for the first time, but right now our focus is on finishing the record. As soon as that's out of the way, we'll be hitting the rehearsal room and getting to grips with playing these bastards live!"

Thanks for the report to Blabbermouth.net.

It would be weak of them to "roll out some of the new songs for the first time" at Reading. Their tour starts in May so they better play some new stuff then as well.

Thank you. Fans need to be less engrossed in their own visions of bands and realize other people have their own motivations. I will admit I am not a fan of St. Anger and the post-Black Album stuff was quite a change from the precedent, but sometimes that change is necessary. Artists need to grow and explore. It's always interesting to see who understands and encourages growth, and who selfishly bitches about change. I am looking forward to a return to the 80's style and am very sad to say I will probably not get the chance to see them live. Whether the new stuff is good or not, I will always love Metallica. Who couldn't love the minds behind the Master of Puppets album?

and the recent interview I read with james and lars said they were returning to their pre-st anger style of songs. just give them a break, they tried something new and it wasn't brilliant. so what? you're going to write them off because they released one mediocre album?

They wanted to write simple songs. They looked back at 'Justice' and said they were out of control; they wanted simple songs and guidance. Thus came the Black Album.

They didn't "sell out;" simple songs have always been more commercial, and that just happens to be how it came out. They changed their style, not their focus on music.

HERE ARE SOME REASONS WHY THE NEW METALLICA ALBUM WILL BE AMAZING AND WILL BE NOTHING LIKE ST. ANGER!!!!!

1. Drums- In St. Anger, Lars took the snare off of his drum and it basically sounded like he was hitting trash cans. Thankfully, for the new album, he has put the snare back on.

2. Tuning- In St. Anger, Metallica used a drop-C tuning which basically makes every note lower and though I applaud Metallica for trying new things, it just ended up not sounding good. But on the new album, they will be back to the traditional E tuning so, along with the drums, it will automatically sound better than St. Anger.

3. Rick Rubin- He is once again working with Metallica on their new album and his idea is to use the Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets albums as reference points when making this new album. So, this new album should sound more like the traditional 80's style Metallica that we've all grown to love.

4. Guitar Solos- This is probably the biggest upgrade over St. Anger. In St. Anger, there were no guitar solos!!!!! How absurd is that? What is the point of having the god, the legend of a guitarist, Kirk Hammett, in your band if you aren't going to let him solo. But, not to worry, in the new album THERE WILL BE GUITAR SOLOS!!!!!

Summary- So, with the addition of good sounding drums, good tuning, 80's style (hopefully), and guitar solos, this album will automatically be good and may be the best Metallica album since the Black Album.

They let him solo, just everyone agreed that a guitar solo isn't a given for every song they ever write.

Still trying to get tickets to Reading. I'll probably have to sell both my Weeping Demon wahs to afford the tickets =p. If anyone in the UK wants to buy one, PM me!

metallica needs to kick Lars out because he is retarded... I think he is the main reason the band has been hurting. St Anger would not have sux'd half as bad as it did if it wasn't for the totally crappy drums. I don't know what Lars problem is he was ok in the early albums but has been going down hill sense then. That and he was the reason they stopped doing instrumentals.

If the new songs are as shit as St Anger, he's still going to get slapped!

How exactly? After 1991 Metallica went downhill. They shouldn't even be classed as metal anymore. They saw an oppertunity to make big bucks and took it. Regardess of all the fans they'd throw away.

Exactly Jawshuwa, I couldn't have said it better myself. Musicians evolve and so does their music. I bet most of the people that complain that they "Sold Out" would be complaining now that all their music sounds the same over the last 25 years now if they didn't change things up.

metallica needs to kick Lars out because he is retarded...

Uhh... no. The reason they don't do instrumentals any more is because Cliff was the main creative force behind those songs (ie Call of the Ktulu and Orion). It's not particularly helpful that said songs contain some impressive bass solos whilst Rob Trujillo is a seriously mediocre bassist. His idea of a solo is mass distortion and wah coupled with some slaps on the low E string. Point being- if Cliff hadn't died:

1) Metallica would still write instrumentals
2) They would have kept producing albums like Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets.
